Chapter 212: B - Face to face with my mortal enemy
CLANG!
A sword of white light stops my axe just before it can take that bastard’s head off.
I recognize it instantly.
It’s a Monster Slayer’s weapon.
But not just any Monster Slayer. That Monster Slayer.
That masked bitch who would’ve killed me a few weeks ago if Philip Serghel — the tiefling who works for Frank — hadn’t stepped in.
This makes no sense... how the hell did she find me again?! And right when I was about to crush those two damn insects!
There’s only one explanation — she’s been following me day and night, waiting for me to make a single mistake!
But this time won’t end like the last.
I’m stronger now! This time, I’ll be the one who kills her!
I raise my axe again, ready to strike at the Monster Slayer, but...
BAM!
Shit!
That bitch beats me to it, reading my move and driving a kick straight into my stomach, sending me crashing into the wall hard enough to crack it.
Fuck... I can feel my bones creaking, my organs twisting inside me.
And yet Frank told me Monster Slayers are just fucking humans. So how the hell can she have this kind of strength and reflexes?!
Instinctively, I clamp a hand over my mouth, holding back a mouthful of blood.
One kick... one fucking kick did this to me? You’ve got to be kidding me!
Luckily, my regeneration starts doing its dirty work, even though the pain is still there.
I struggle back to my feet as the two thugs run away with their tails between their legs.
So now it’s not just the cops. Even Monster Slayers protect scum like them. What a shitty world...
It doesn’t matter. I’ll deal with this bitch first, then I’ll hunt those bastards down again. All I have to do is follow the trail of blood left by the fat bastard’s severed hand.
She caught me off guard once, but that won’t happen again!
I grip my axe with both hands and charge at her at a speed no normal human eye should be able to follow, especially in the dark. Yet...
CLANG!
Again. That bitch blocks my strike like it’s nothing!
No... that’s impossible!
I swing my heavy metallic blood axe again. Then again. And again!
Fuck, from the outside I must look completely desperate, but for some reason she does nothing except defend herself. She doesn’t even try to fight back.
Is this bitch playing with me? Or maybe... am I wrong? Maybe my relentless barrage isn’t even giving her a chance to react!
If that’s the case... then I just have to keep going.
Harder! Faster!
But...
BAM!
An elbow slams straight into my face — I don’t even see it coming! Before I can get into a defensive stance, a knee crashes into my stomach.
Instinctively, I double over, clutching my abdomen, but she follows up with another knee — this time to my nose — and in the next instant, I’m sprawled across the asphalt.
My stomach twists, blood floods my throat, spilling endlessly from the corners of my mouth. Even breathing makes my lungs burn as if they’re on fire... and my nose... it’s completely shattered!
No... it can’t end like this.
It can’t!
I grip the axe with every bit of strength I have left, pull my arm back... and hurl it straight at her.
She’s less than five meters away. At this distance, there’s no way I should miss!
SWING!
She... cut it?!
An instant before the spinning axe could hit her, she literally sliced it in half with her sword of light.
Fuck, her strength is insane... but I expected that! It was only a distraction for my real attack!
I burst upward, launching an attack from above.
The sudden movement sends waves of searing pain through my entire body — I’m still nowhere near recovered from the damage I’ve taken — but I don’t have a choice if I want to kill her!
I draw back my fist, putting every last bit of strength into it, ready to crush her skull, but once again she beats me to it.
She leaps toward me and drives a punch straight into my chin.
The brutal blow sends me flying through the air before I come crashing back down onto the asphalt.
More blood erupts from my mouth. And my jaw... I can feel it tearing away from my skull, shattered into countless pieces!
She’s too strong... I can’t move... not even a single muscle.
My strength is gone... and my blood... I think there’s more of it outside my body than inside now.
My vision keeps fading, and my regeneration has completely broken down.
And yet... why hasn’t she killed me yet? She could’ve done it at least three times during this fight if she’d used her sword.
Instead, she hit me with her bare hands every single time.
Did she do it just to make me suffer before killing me?
She must be a real sadist, enjoying watching me struggle back to my feet over and over, weaker and more broken each time, only to slam me back down even harder.
Yeah... pretty hypocritical of me, considering that’s exactly what I was planning to do to those two thugs just a few minutes ago.
I don’t even try to get back up anymore — I don’t have the strength.
I just lie there on my back, on the asphalt now stained red with my own blood.
Naomi... I’m sorry for what I said to you...
And you too, Kimberly. I’m sorry I won’t be there for your fashion show... but I’m sure you’ll look amazing, and you’ll do great anyway.
They say that when you’re about to die, you relive all the happiest moments of your life in an instant... but maybe I’m so broken that I don’t even have the strength to remember the good times with Veronica and all the times we fucked.
So yeah... not even one last bit of satisfaction before I die.
How pathetic...
The Monster Slayer takes a few steps toward me.
Then she raises her sword toward the sky, ready to deliver the finishing blow.
I squeeze my eyes shut as hard as I can, bracing myself for the inevitable — the moment I’ll feel the worst pain imaginable, and then... nothing.
One... two... three seconds.
My eyes snap open. She’s gone.
Now I’m alone, lying in a pool of my own blood in this narrow, dark alley on the outskirts of Long Island City.
