Chapter 210: B - Trouble ahead (1)
"As you probably figured out, I’m not the kind of person who likes owing people anything. So tomorrow afternoon I’m paying you back for the drink you got me last week."
That’s what Kimberly told me yesterday after school. And as if that wasn’t enough...
"...I still haven’t decided where to go, so here’s my number. We can figure it out later for tomorrow."
Getting a girl’s phone number isn’t exactly a huge deal. But when the girl is someone like Kimberly, it definitely feels like a win.
At this point, I just hope all this waiting and effort are worth it.
For our date, Kimberly picks Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City, just a short walk from the Church of the God of Light, where Naomi and I followed her a few weeks ago.
Calling the place a bar would be giving it way too much credit. It’s a total dump.
But in the end, the company is what really matters. Right?
After years of hunting through the worst neighborhoods in New York, one look is all I need to spot scum. And this place is crawling with them.
We’re literally surrounded by a bunch of unemployed thugs who spend their days drinking and making a scene. Seriously... what kind of place did she bring me to?
"See that hot chick over there? Bet I can get her to suck my dick right here in front of everyone."
"With that rat face? You’d scare her off before you even opened your mouth. Leave it to me."
Those are the kinds of comments coming from the tables around us, loud enough for everyone to hear.
And through all of it, Kimberly doesn’t look uncomfortable or embarrassed in the slightest.
I’d kill every last one of them where they stand, but I guess now isn’t the time.
"So, Kimberly, excited? Only two days left until the fashion show," I ask casually before taking a sip of my beer.
It was supposed to be a simple question to break the ice... but I never expected it to send her into a full-blown panic.
Kimberly immediately starts fidgeting, tapping her foot nonstop and letting out frustrated little groans.
"Y-Yeah, I’m excited... really excited... too excited! God, I’m literally freaking out! T-There’ll be reporters, photographers, special guests, professional models... even national TV crews! And so many people watching! If I mess something up, if I trip or make a fool of myself... the whole world will know! It’ll be so embarrassing..."
I can’t really blame her. Kimberly isn’t used to being in the spotlight.
She gets flustered and starts stuttering even when a teacher calls her up to the board. Standing on a runway as the star of a national event?
Yeah... I wouldn’t want to be in her shoes either.
"Didn’t you say they’ve been preparing you for this really carefully? So what are you worried about?"
"They have, technically... but during rehearsals it’s just me and Elenoire. Walking the runway isn’t the problem, and neither is my posture — that part’s easy. The problem is what my nerves might do to me. I think it’s pretty obvious I’m not exactly the kind of person who likes being the center of attention..."
"Well, if it helps, I could come watch the show too. Maybe seeing a familiar face in the crowd would help you calm down..."
It’s not like I actually care about watching a fashion show. But the thought of seeing Kimberly in that incredible deep blue dress covered in diamonds again, with that plunging neckline and the thigh-high slit... yeah, that’s a pretty tempting reason to go.
She gives me a surprised look, almost annoyed.
"What do you mean? I just assumed you were coming without me even having to ask!" Kimberly blurts out, her face turning even redder. "Of course you have to be there! And you’d better be, because you’ll be in big trouble if I don’t see you in the front row!"
It definitely wasn’t a given, but it’s nice to know.
For some reason, she feels comfortable enough around me that she wants to know I’ll be there before she steps onto that runway. And when you’re trying to win over a girl who’s this shy, that’s a huge step forward.
"Don’t worry. I’ll be in the front row cheering for you," I say with a smile.
She smiles back — that sweet, shy smile that could melt even the coldest heart.
It’s obvious she likes me. But if she ever found out this all started because of a stupid bet that turned into a personal challenge, I seriously doubt she’d be happy about it.
Unfortunately for us, the peace of this quiet afternoon is about to end.
One of those assholes sitting at the bar has apparently decided that the creepy comments he’s been throwing at Kimberly ever since we sat down aren’t enough anymore.
"Hey, blondie. You know you’re really hot?" a middle-aged man says. He’s ugly, short, fat, and... fuck, he smells like a sewer too.
He staggers over to our table, looking like he could collapse at any second.
"You know, I saw a picture of you in the window of some boutique on Fifth Avenue. Gotta admit, I jerked off to it just last night. So... you must be a model, right? So why don’t you ditch the kid and come with me instead?"
Kimberly, proving once again how smart she is, does the only sensible thing someone like her can do in a situation like this: she acts like he doesn’t exist.
She doesn’t even look at him, even though it’s obvious she’s uncomfortable and worried.
I just shake my head and smile, going along with her choice to ignore him, hoping the fat bastard will eventually get tired of being ignored and go back to his table.
But, just as I expected, he’s not the kind of guy who gives up that easily.
"You deaf or what, you stuck-up bitch? I’m talking to you!" the man yells.
At the sound of his shout, another ugly-looking guy jumps to his feet and walks over to us. He’s a huge man, almost seven feet tall — a black man in his fifties who looks like a retired boxer.
Once again, Kimberly ignores them. She takes a sip of hot chocolate from the mug she’s holding with trembling hands, probably shaking from anger just as much as fear.
"These two brats giving you trouble, Robert?" the newcomer asks.
"Don’t worry, Jamal. This little slut was just about to dump this loser and come with me!"
Then he reaches for Kimberly, trying to grab her by the shoulders.
But it takes a lot more than a clumsy drunk fatass to catch me off guard. Thanks to my vampire reflexes, I move first and drive a sharp punch into his chin before he can so much as lay a finger on her.
Robert crashes onto his back, his jaw and teeth shattered, blood pouring from his mouth.
I held back as much as I could.
If I’d hit him with my full strength, his head would’ve come clean off and landed blocks away.
Even so... fuck, I didn’t mean to mess him up this badly. Since when am I this strong?
Maybe all those training sessions with Frank Pyton didn’t just improve my control over Sanguis energy — they boosted my physical strength too.
Jamal doesn’t just stand there, though. He clenches his right fist and raises it, ready to bring it down on me, but...
"Jamal, you try that, and I’ll kick your ass all the way back to prison!"
Luckily — for Jamal, anyway — the police show up just in time. He immediately backs away from the table with both hands in the air as two officers walk toward him.
The instant before the cops reach us, I get to my feet and grab Kimberly’s hand.
"Next time, I’m picking the place, okay?" I say as I pull her away from that dump full of thugs.
She gives a small nod, letting me lead her as she runs as fast as she can.
Poor thing. She’s obviously still in shock after what just happened.
Of course, she has no way of knowing we were never really in danger.
If anything, the cops are the ones who saved those two assholes from me.
After a few minutes of walking fast, her hand still wrapped in mine, Kimberly finally starts to calm down.
Unfortunately... it looks like this isn’t over yet.
Kimberly hasn’t noticed, but those two ugly bastards are still following us.
