Chapter 50: Pollution and Mutation
Because of that, after leaving behind some supplies he himself did not particularly lack, Joo Joowon simply carried his belongings and returned home.
With six points in Strength, carrying items had become much easier than before.
The moment he opened the door, Byeol immediately pounced toward him while releasing soft and spoiled sounding meows.
Joo Joowon: "..."
He quickly removed his gloves and lifted Byeol up for inspection.
Fortunately, after obtaining the hand crossbow, killing zombies no longer caused blood and filth to splash all over his body.
Especially his lower half, which now usually remained almost completely clean.
Otherwise, if Byeol’s fluffy white fur became stained and dirty, Joo Joowon genuinely felt like he would mentally collapse.
Having someone waiting at home for his return was undoubtedly a very comforting feeling.
Joo Joowon used the cleaning cloth placed above the shoe cabinet to remove his helmet.
Then he hugged Byeol and kissed it once before finally carrying the supplies into the apartment.
There were simply too many office workers living throughout the entire residential complex.
Moreover, most people capable of affording apartments here were already financially struggling in daily life.
Because of that, very few households stocked snacks or comfort foods.
However, essentials like rice, flour, and cooking oil were extremely common.
In order to prevent rice from spoiling or becoming infested with bugs before finishing it, most tenants who cooked usually only bought five or ten jin of rice at a time rather than stockpiling huge amounts.
Only families living together would purchase larger quantities.
However, simply having rice was already enough.
Joo Joowon lived alone.
3kg of rice was enough for him to eat for one or even two months.
Because of that, he did not lack staple food.
What he truly lacked were things necessary for maintaining balanced nutrition, such as salt, sugar, seasonings, and vegetables capable of being stored for long periods.
Fortunately, he had found potatoes today.
Joo Joowon decided not to eat eggs today.
He never particularly liked eggs in the first place.
If he actually had other choices, he basically would not eat them at all.
The eggs he bought at home were entirely used as extra meals for Byeol.
Byeol could not understand why Joo Joowon sometimes brought him out hunting and sometimes did not.
Did his owner think it was useless?
But it was only a little kitten!
As usual, Byeol circled around Joo Joowon’s legs repeatedly.
After getting picked up and heavily buried into its fur for a deep sniff, Byeol failed to detect anything unusual about its owner.
As a result, it quickly stopped thinking about it entirely and carefree returned to its nest to rest.
After finishing his meal, Joo Joowon finally put on the Beginner Lower Garment he had temporarily been wearing outside.
The Beginner Lower Garment was a pair of sporty shorts matching the upper garment set.
Both pieces were pure white and extremely easy to dirty.
The waistband was tightened using two straps.
After firmly tying them, Joo Joowon re equipped Sixth Sense and returned to the bedroom to observe the pot of cat grass.
Light rain still continued falling outside.
Thankfully, it did not appear to be growing heavier.
He attempted using his talent to sense the cat grass and determine whether it triggered any feeling of danger.
Ever since receiving the warning from his talent earlier, Joo Joowon had continuously thought about what exactly made the rain dangerous.
After considering it over and over again, only one answer seemed possible.
Pollution.
What would happen after already infected zombies became polluted further?
The answer was obvious.
Their levels would increase.
Besides that, another dangerous source would likely emerge as well.
Plants.
Joo Joowon had searched through the marketplace before.
During these past two days, the only infected creatures that had appeared were humans and animals.
There had been absolutely no sign of mutated plants.
However, there were simply too many plants existing in this world.
No matter how he thought about it, Joo Joowon found it impossible to believe that the game’s creators would completely ignore the role plants could play.
Considering the sheer size of humanity’s population, situations where monsters became insufficient for players to kill would inevitably appear sooner or later.
The game developers probably would not want to see that happen.
Ordinary games existed to make players feel happy and enjoy themselves.
But hell difficulty games existed to make people suffer constantly while remaining trapped inside endless challenges.
Even though current conditions were already extremely difficult for many people, things still had not reached the point of becoming truly worse than death.
There was also the marketplace itself.
Honestly speaking, based on the current difficulty level of the game, the opening of the marketplace was practically equivalent to activating legal cheats internally.
It had instantly transformed a previously difficult situation into something significantly easier.
Moreover, because trading remained possible, some people would rather spend all their wealth than go outside and fight zombies personally.
Joo Joowon had even seen bizarre transaction listings involving used personal items and other strange things on the marketplace.
The absurd part was that there were genuinely people willing to purchase them.
Honestly, under these circumstances, much of the fear and panic from the initial arrival of the apocalypse had already weakened considerably.
He had even encountered people who truly treated everything as if it were simply a game.
Some naively believed the game was actually a wonderful thing.
Not only did they no longer need to deal with disgusting bosses from their previous jobs, but in the future they could supposedly steadily become superhuman beings capable of challenging the heavens themselves.
There had always been plenty of people lacking any sense of crisis.
As for how those people would end up in the future, it had nothing to do with Joo Joowon.
However, there was no way the core theme of this apocalypse game could truly remain this relaxed and easygoing.
After thinking things through repeatedly, Joo Joowon felt that the marketplace being opened only temporarily might actually be a subtle hint left behind by the game itself.
