Chapter 3: First Zombie Kill
If he had a choice, Joo Joowon would have preferred that they break through the doors.
In that case, he could directly block the entrance, hide behind his own door, and use the doorway as a choke point to kill monsters.
But now, it seemed that was not possible.
After waiting a while longer, the zombies still had not broken through the doors.
Instead, because there were no other noises outside, they gradually became quiet again.
Seeing this, Joo Joowon finally returned inside and moved a square table to block it behind the door.
The table came with the rental unit.
The tabletop was glass and both the legs and the frame beneath the glass were made of iron and steel.
Even if the glass top broke, it would not affect its usability.
It was quite heavy, so Joo Joowon had high hopes for it.
Even if it failed, it could at least act as a buffer and give him enough time to escape.
After that, Joo Joowon was still not at ease.
He also placed the mop handle and broom handle under the table.
This way, even if the zombies had great strength and tried to push the table away, it would not be easy.
After finishing all these preparations, Joo Joowon finally climbed onto the table, opened the peephole, and inserted the tool inside.
This lock picking tool used the principle of leverage.
When the movable handle on the outside was pressed, the internal end would push down the door handle from inside.
If used skillfully, an anti theft door could be opened within seconds.
Of course, he did not have that level of skill.
Moreover, the zombies on the other side of the door who had heard the noise and started banging again made his task even more difficult.
After struggling for quite a while, he finally managed to get the tool to grip the door handle.
Joo Joowon climbed down from the table.
He then held the fire axe, took a deep breath, and pressed the movable handle.
"Click."
In almost the blink of an eye, the frenzied zombie violently slammed the door open.
The table braced behind the door let out a harsh screeching sound as a result.
Fortunately, it was sturdy enough and was not pushed aside, restricting the zombie’s movements.
Taking advantage of this opportunity, Joo Joowon immediately swung the fire axe down.
Splattering blood sprayed onto his body, bringing with it a somewhat unpleasant smell.
Joo Joowon had not held back at all with this strike, causing the fire axe to become firmly lodged in the gaps of the zombie’s bones to the point that he could not pull it back out.
Fortunately, the gap he had left in the door was not very large, so the zombie could not squeeze through.
This gave him enough time to yank the axe free.
At that moment, he gripped the handle tightly and pulled backward with force, then swung again, pulled it free again, and swung again.
After repeating this several times, Joo Joowon finally split open the zombie’s skull.
[ Ding! ]
[ Level 1 Zombie has been killed ]
[ EXP +1 ]
[ Copper Coins +1 ]
Only then did Joo Joowon finally relax, his arms trembling slightly.
Through this attempt, Joo Joowon basically confirmed that he simply did not possess the combat power necessary to confront zombies head on.
He did not consider himself weak.
At one meter seventy three tall, he had a large frame that was not skinny at all.
He never do sports and his weight was standard.
Some frail adult men might not even compare to him physically.
But he had never received professional training and never went to the gym.
Although he was not certain whether zombies shared the same weakness as in novels, namely the head, the hardness of the skull was definitely not something he could split apart in one clean strike.
Success required repeated chopping several times.
In addition, the zombie’s strength also seemed considerable.
Joo Joowon was not sure whether this was because the zombie he faced had originally been an adult male.
However, regardless of whether zombies were male or female, they were monsters without pain.
They could unleash the full strength of their bodies without caring about injuries, while humans could not ignore bodily harm so recklessly.
Humans even had to avoid getting injured in order to prevent infection, making their attacks inevitably more cautious and restrained.
So at the current stage, it seemed that most ordinary people simply did not possess the ability to kill zombies head on.
The difficulty of leveling up also exceeded his expectations somewhat.
One zombie only provided one point of experience, but reaching Level 1 required five points.
In other words, a person needed to kill at least five Level 1 Zombies.
Joo Joowon stopped thinking about these things.
After recovering a bit of strength, he walked into the apartment and searched around.
He did not find any weapons in the room, not even a kitchen knife.
The refrigerator contained only drinks and beer.
He did not bother being picky.
He grabbed a food delivery bag and stuffed everything inside before taking back the lock picking tool and returning home.
After returning to his apartment, Joo Joowon finally relaxed and sat down on the floor while removing his helmet.
It was only April, so the temperature was not particularly high.
Otherwise, dressed like this, Joo Joowon might have fainted from the heat before even finishing off the zombie.
Even so, he was drenched in sweat.
He struggled to remove his padded coat and began thinking about countermeasures.
The facts proved that his method of killing zombies was feasible and repeatable.
However, the margin for error in close combat was far too low.
The fire axe was still not long enough as a weapon and killing zombies was not easy at all.
Just a few swings already left his muscles sore, making him completely unwilling to kill a second zombie before properly resting.
Was there a method that required less effort?
