Chapter 283: MINEFIELD

It took less than an hour before the car that Edward was driving finally arrived at their destination. Erika looked out of the window and found a building heavily guarded by men in military uniforms with large guns in their arms.

Electric wires were used to surround the building like a fence in case someone wanted to escape. Because of the sun that seemed to want to blind them, Erika wasn’t able to look to the top of the building since it was enormously tall.

Noticing their arrival, two military men walked over to them, their heavy black boots making a thud whenever they took a step closer to them and Erika could only wonder just how heavy it was.

When they got to the car, they saluted immediately to show their respect, abruptly bringing their left hands to their forehead while their expressions remained as stoic as ever.

Erika observed them intently and for a second, she thought they held their breath to make their chests puff up like a fish.

Edward got out of the car and returned the salute before asking,

"Are they in the interrogation room?"

One of the military men replied, "Yes sir!" His voice was so loud that Erika had thought that she was going to go deaf at that moment. She cringed because she gathered herself back together.

Looking at the clean military uniforms in the color of forest green, she suddenly imagined Ethan in one of those uniforms. ’His large physique would fit in,’ she thought to herself as she blushed because of the promise that she’d made to him before leaving the house earlier.

Erika only got out of her thoughts when she heard a knock on the car door and she looked up at Edward.

"Did you change your mind?" He asked her and she frowned at his question, her forehead creased in confusion until she realized that she was still sitting in the car.

Erika resisted the urge to slap herself that instant for thinking something so dirty when she had a business to take care of there.

She shook her head, implying no before reaching for the door and getting down from the car.

When her sneakers landed on the dirt that surrounded the whole area, it made her wonder why the whole place wasn’t kept clean and dirt was everywhere.

She darted her eyes around until she found another part where dirt was but this time, it was like a field. ’Probably where they would train,’ Erika thought to herself but the fence that was also surrounded with electric wires made her frown in confusion.

When Edward noticed her eyes were elsewhere and not where she was walking, he turned to look at what she was so curious about and his eyes landed in the same ’field’.

"That’s a minefield," he answered her inner question before she was able to voice it out yet.

When she heard him talk, her eyes widened in surprise. Never in her life did she think that she would ever see a minefield.

"But why is it here? Shouldn’t it be at the barrack or something?" She asked in confusion. A lot of the military men were around and in the night, a few could mistakenly walk in there and have their body roasted to a crisp.

"There’s one at the barrack," he paused, looking at the minefield before he continued. "The reason it’s here is because of the criminals that we have in here," he pointed at the building that they were heading to and Erika’s eyes only widened more in surprise.

"There are more criminals in there," she didn’t ask but stated and Edward smirked before looking back at her.

"Yes, there is. And this minefield is here to make sure they don’t dare to escape unless they are asking for a death wish," he replied while pointing at the other side of the building that had another electric wired fence and Erika’s eyes widened for the third time.

"Those places are filled with bombs?" She asked despite knowing what the answer was and Edward nodded in response.

She had the urge to go over there and see the bombs herself since she hadn’t seen one herself but remembered that the bombs were buried in the ground. Besides, she still hasn’t spoken with Mary.

They both continued to walk until they entered the building whose body was made of silver and looked like a soundproof house but Erika doubted that there was anything like a soundproof house. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Getting inside, she noticed the whole place filled with even more military men than they were outside and as soon as they sighted Edward, they immediately stopped what they were doing and saluted while puffing up their chests like dying fishes. Erika hated herself for making fun of them in such a manner but she couldn’t help it. She conceded her inner joke as she wore a solemn expression on her face.

Edward made sure to return the salute as well before they started walking up the stairs.

Erika thanked herself for wearing sneakers that day instead of heels since they had to climb five floors before they finally reached.

"Why is there no elevator," she asked as she panted heavily, trying to gather her strength to continue walking again.

Edward chuckled at her question before he finally replied to her.

"This is an interrogation building, not a hotel Erika. We have criminals here and we don’t intend to give them a comfortable life and besides, if they dare to escape, the elevator will be a much easier way for them," he explained to her as he continued to laugh.

"Ahh..." Erika made an inaudible sound as she finally understood what he was talking about.

They passed three doors before Edward paused at the fourth one. "This is where they are. Are you ready?" He asked her as if he was already aware of her doubts.

She nodded her head and Edward opened the door for her and they walked inside.
