Chapter 439: Chapter 262: Self-Realization (4)
After the meeting ended, the high-ranking members of the Whig Society with practical duties all left to attend to their business, while Fang Zhen remained.
Soon, the meeting room emptied, leaving only him and Alexander.
Once everyone had left, Alexander rubbed the bridge of his nose, then gestured for Fang Zhen to take a seat before sitting down himself.
Alexander made no effort to hide his fatigue. "The Whig Society is under immense pressure right now," he said. "This is also a critical time for making choices."
"My actions now could affect the future of the entire Kingdom. To put it more grandly, they might even shape the destiny of humankind."
"I don’t consider myself a special person, nor do I believe I have some divine mission. It’s just that circumstances have brought me to this critical juncture. Even so, I can still feel the immense weight of responsibility on my shoulders."
"If I fail to make the right decisions, future generations will curse my name. I would also be squandering this once-in-a-century opportunity."
After he finished, Alexander suddenly chuckled. "Of course, I should just focus on doing what must be done. The pressure must be getting to me, making me talk your ear off about all this."
Fang Zhen nodded slightly. "I understand."
Alexander was the leader of the Whig Society, the man in charge of the second most powerful faction in the Kingdom. Though humble, he was undeniably one of this world’s most influential figures.
But even influential figures were only human. They had their own troubles and worries, and they also needed someone to talk to.
Yet, it was often difficult for such people to find an equal they could truly confide in—someone who understood them.
Fang Zhen happened to be the perfect candidate.
He truly understood Alexander’s current predicament.
In this world, many people pursued only pleasure, power, and status; that was all they saw.
But there were others who were genuinely trying to accomplish something, to build a legacy, and they shouldered immense responsibility.
While these people might appear powerful, omnipotent, and highly respected, with high office comes great responsibility. Often, those at the top were not their own masters.
Fang Zhen didn’t despise power. Rather, he understood all too well the price it demanded, especially from a conscientious wielder.
Back in his own world, he had once met a man who could be considered a provincial governor. The man appeared easygoing, but within his domain, his word was law.
But according to those who had dealings with this powerful figure, the man had likely sacrificed all of his free time and personal will, forced to constantly align himself with an even higher authority.
That was why, when it came to power, Fang Zhen neither pursued it fanatically nor held it in contempt. He simply regarded it with a level head.
’Everyone’s human. No need for prejudice or to be dazzled by a halo. If you try to see things from their perspective, you can understand.’
Fang Zhen took a sip of the water that had been prepared for him, then set the cup down and asked, "There were too many people around earlier, so I didn’t have a chance to bring this up. But now seems like a good time."
"We sparred earlier, and you said that I had entered the Extraordinary Realm. You also said that you’re in this realm as well."
"I’m very curious—what exactly is this Extraordinary Realm you mentioned? Is it that ability to anticipate someone’s actions?"
Fang Zhen’s question startled Alexander out of his serious thoughts, a flicker of astonishment crossing his face.
Alexander stared at Fang Zhen.
"You really don’t know what the Extraordinary Realm is? Then how did you reach this stage?"
Fang Zhen considered this for a moment.
"Self-enlightenment."
