Chapter 280: Ch 280: Self-Distruct

"So, what is it that you want? Yawn. There must be a reason you woke us up in the middle of the night like this, right?"

Mira still looked half-asleep when she asked this question. But thankfully, she had more than enough awareness to keep her head up and understand him.

Kyle, on the other hand, was fully awake and ready to hear Rin out.

"Hey, do you both still desire your revenge against the system, and are you willing to do anything to get it?"

Rin asked, and whatever sleep remained in the pair’s eyes vanished in an instant. They looked alert and ready to answer him.

"Of course. This is our most important wish."

Kyle nodded to show that he was serious. There was no hint of deception in his eyes, and Rin nodded before taking a deep breath.

"In that case, I need your help in defeating the system. I am sure the system is going to use me as its core soon. I can already feel it starting to take over. I don’t know how long I will be able to remain myself either. So I need you to look for a solution."

Rin remained calm even though he was panicking on the inside. He felt like he should not be saying all this to the pair in front of him, but getting it off his chest felt therapeutic.

The pair, on the other hand, narrowed their eyes as they looked at him.

"Are you saying that we should make use of you in any way we can? What if we decide to kill you here and now to stop the system’s progress?"

Kyle asked, and Rin felt a pang of fear hit his chest.

It did not look like Kyle was lying to him. His eyes were serious, and Rin had a feeling that he would go through with his threat if he believed it was the right choice.

And yet, the fear was momentary. Relief followed soon after, and Rin realized that he would not mind dying if it was for a just cause, like stopping the system.

"I—"

"No, it’s better if you don’t speak. I have a feeling I’ll only get angrier if I hear you talk right now."

Kyle rubbed his forehead before letting out a sigh.

Rin did not say anything after that, but it was clear that he was thinking about what to say next to gain these two’s cooperation.

"First, can you slowly tell us what is happening? Maybe we can find a better solution to this problem than nuking you."

Mira pointed out, and Rin slowly nodded before telling her and Kyle everything that had been happening.

It was easy to talk to this pair, and Rin had a feeling it was because he was not close to them.

By the time he finished, both Mira and Kyle had serious expressions on their faces.

"This sounds really dangerous. How close are you to losing control right now?"

Mira asked while grabbing Rin’s hand and examining it. But she was cautious as well, keeping her distance from him in case he lost his mind and decided to attack her.

But Rin was not that far gone. He still had his senses, and he allowed Mira to do whatever she wanted without showing any signs of aggression.

"My situation is under control right now. The symptoms I’m experiencing are nothing more than losing consciousness and dizziness. Sometimes, my body moves without my input, which is annoying. But I have a feeling this is just the beginning."

Rin knew that the situation would get much worse as time passed. The system was slowly gaining control over him from the inside.

The pair in front of him exchanged a glance before understanding passed between them.

"So, are you willing to hand your precious life over to us in order to defeat the system? Your friends won’t be happy."

Mira pointed out, and Rin nodded.

"I am well aware that I might not make it out alive, but I have no regrets. As for everyone else, I’m sure they will miss me for some time, but they will adapt to the situation eventually. I would appreciate it if you didn’t tell them what is going on just yet."

Rin made this request, and the pair exchanged another look before nodding.

"Sure. We’ll keep your secret. We have no desire to become enemies of your people either. But are you sure about doing this?"

Mira asked, and Rin suddenly felt like he had a stone lodged in his throat.

Was he ready to throw away his life and hand it over to the pair in front of him?

Of course not.

But what other choice did he have at the moment?

It was either this or becoming a puppet of the system.

"Well, if you find a solution to my situation, I’ll gladly take it. But until then, let’s do things my way."

With that, the conversation came to an end, and Rin left the room.

The two who were left behind exchanged a glance and sighed.

"This feels like a sudden stroke of luck, but I don’t feel happy about it."

Kyle muttered, and Mira nodded.

"It is never a good feeling to know that a comrade will soon die. But we cannot take a step back. For the sake of everything we have endured until now, let’s make sure we succeed in bringing down the system this time."

Mira spoke, and she was about to go back to sleep when a loud alarm suddenly rang out.

Since she was not fully connected to the system, she neither saw nor heard it.

But Kyle looked at his screen with a sick expression on his face.

"What happened?"

She asked, but Kyle did not reply.

Instead, the words ’System Evolution Triggered’ were reflected in his eyes.

With that, they were truly out of time, and the situation was spiraling out of control and something new was being born.
