Chapter 257: Ch 257: The calamity is hard to deal with

’Do I look like a person who would agree to sacrifice their comrade for a chance at life?’

Rin snapped at the system, only to get deafening silence from the other side. The system’s stance was clear in this matter.

It made Rin not want to hear more from the system, but the blasted thing was hell-bent on talking sense into him.

[Rookie, I understand your frustration, and I sympathize with your efforts as well. However, you need to face the situation with a calm head. The calamity is about to go on cooldown, but you do not have enough firepower to expose its core from the outside.]

[So sacrifice someone to get the core from the inside. That does not necessarily mean that the sacrifice has to die. Make a wise choice.]

The system was giving Rin a way out, and he felt like he was trapped.

He did not want to take such a huge risk. But he also felt like he would be sacrificing everyone else if he did not take such a risk.

’I...do I even have a choice?’

He asked, and the system remained silent.

In the end, if someone was going to get sacrificed, then it was going to be Rin.

"Teressa, keep running and make sure you warn the others to get as far away as possible. I have an idea about how to deal with this calamity."

Rin told her, and she looked worried. But she trusted Rin and decided to go ahead on her own.

"I...will go and warn the others that you are planning something reckless. So you better come back safe and sound. Otherwise, you will be in for a world-class beating."

Teressa must have sensed something from him because she gave him a worried look before she headed back out.

Rin watched her go with a small smile on his face before it faded away, and he headed toward the calamity.

[Are you sure about this, Rookie? You don’t have to be the one to take on the calamity yourself. You can allow someone else to have this honor.]

The system warned Rin, but he shook his head at those words.

"I will have to be the one to take care of this mess. It would be for the best if I do not involve anyone else."

The system seemed to sigh at his words, but it did not try to stop him. Rin had a feeling this was what it had wanted from the start anyway.

Rin headed toward the calamity and decided to reach out toward it. The calamity decided to grab him and swallow him whole, which he did not resist. After all, what was even the point in resisting at this point? All he was going to get was more pain.

’Die! Die with us and become one with our pain. We shall make you a part of our beloved as well. That way, we will be able to be reborn with new powers and try this again.’

Rin did not fight the pull. He allowed it to take over his senses.

"Rin, no-!"

He thought he heard Shelly’s loud yell reach his ears, but he was too busy with the current situation to pay it any attention.

But he did feel relief flooding his system after hearing her voice.

’Ah, it looks like Shelly is awake. This is good. I was worried about her. Now I can do this with a much calmer mindset.’

Rin looked back at Shelly, and he noticed her pink hair right before the calamity swallowed him whole.

He saw Shelly lunging toward him and Kyle trying to stop her. But it was all too late. His vision was gone, and he felt himself sinking deeper and deeper inside the prison he was being held in.

__________

"Rin, no-"

Shelly yelled as soon as she saw the calamity swallowing Rin whole. She ran toward him in order to try and help him out, but it was of no use. Rin was gone, and there was nothing she could do about it.

But she was still not willing to give up.

She charged toward the calamity, intending to grab Rin from inside and drag him out, but her hand sank inside the calamity before she knew it.

"Darn it! What are you doing, Shelly? Do you want to die here? Rin sacrificed himself for this..."

"But Rin is dead! Is there a point in me even living anymore? I might as well follow him-"

"He might not be dead. He might have a plan for such a situation. Give him some time at least."

Kyle pointed out, and logically, Shelly knew that he was right.

Rin had walked toward this calamity almost as if he had a plan.

But that did not mean that Shelly was rational about this. She felt like she was losing her mind.

"I know, but I-"

She tried to speak, only for the calamity to swallow her as well.

Kyle, who was watching from the side, looked shocked at the sudden development before he let out a curse.

"Darn it! Now we lost both of them! But at least I can tell that they are both alive. That has to count for something here."

He took a deep breath to calm himself down, but panic was starting to settle into his bones.

He was not sure what he could do without Rin around. Rin was the key to his plan.

’On a brighter note, the system won’t want to lose him either. I am sure Rin will survive this...somehow...’

Kyle reasoned.

However, Shelly was much less calm inside the calamity and panicked as she tried to find Rin there.

"Rin, where are you? Talk to me if you can hear me. I am here to find you."

She tried calling out in the dark, but no one answered. She did feel a presence nearby, and she decided to follow it. But the person she came across was not Rin.

It was her mother, who looked like she was almost dead but had somehow managed to cling to her last shred of life and humanity.

Her cold eyes met Shelly’s, and she decided to ignore her mother.

But Karina had other plans for her.

"Are you pitying me? Don’t! Because your fate will be similar to mine."
