Chapter 213: Ch 213: The Calamity is too hard to take down
The calamity was slowly heading toward the settlement, and Rin tried to think of ways to stop it.
His first thought was to try and blow the calamity up from the inside, but he doubted it would help much. The calamity was much tougher, and even approaching it was a risk for him.
Honestly, Rin regretted his lack of combat skills and preparation. He was so reliant on his teammates to help him win that he had no idea what he could do on his own.
[Good luck, Rookie. This system believes that you will come out victorious.]
"How do you expect me to do that? At least give me some combat skills if you believe in me."
Rin complained as he kept his distance from the calamity. But it did not take long for the calamity to notice him.
After all, Rin had been following it the whole time.
He paused as soon as the calamity looked at him and then took a hesitant step back. He doubted he would get attacked by the calamity based on what had happened so far. But the calamity proved him wrong.
That thing raised its fist before throwing it toward the building Rin was hiding behind.
Rin dodged the attack in time and avoided the falling debris caused by it. But the calamity did not calm down and came after him once more.
[Woohoo! Go for it, Rookie. Show this monster that it should not interfere with a system employee.]
The system seemed to be enjoying watching Rin fight (not that there was much to see anyway), but Rin’s life was on the line here. He had to do something—anything—to help himself.
’At this point, the only thing I can think of doing is paralyzing the calamity with as many potions as I can.’
Rin dodged the monster somehow before gaining enough distance to coat his bombs with the paralyzing solution and chuck them toward the monster.
They hit the calamity and exploded, causing a cloud of the potion to spread.
Rin watched as the calamity staggered as soon as it was hit. His plan had worked, and he had stopped the calamity for a few seconds. Now he only needed to somehow cause enough damage—
But that was wishful thinking on his part because the calamity let out a roar before pulling itself back up and looking at Rin with an angry expression.
Then it rushed at him at full speed, causing Rin to barely be able to defend himself.
His paralyzing potion had worked, and the calamity had become slower. But the difference was not significant enough to matter.
’Shit! This is not good. It seems like I am about to die after all.’
Rin took a deep breath as he felt himself getting tired. His fatigue levels were rising, and they would soon reach dangerous levels.
’Hey, can’t you do anything to help me?’
Rin questioned the system as soon as he felt like he had no way out.
The system had always said that it was here to keep Rin alive, so shouldn’t it do something to save his life?
[Don’t worry, Rookie. You have this system’s guarantee that you won’t die. Now trust the system and keep dodging.]
Rin let out a frustrated sigh but did as he was told. He had no other option left at this point.
The system kept telling him that he would survive, but Rin could not see a way out.
Somehow, he got cornered by the calamity, and he looked at it with narrowed eyes, wondering what it was going to do to him.
’I wish Shelly was here. I have a feeling she would not have let me die. I suddenly miss her. Is it because I am about to die?’
Rin questioned as he looked at the calamity. He wanted to engrave his killer into his memories so that he could curse it after he was dead.
’Maybe this is what I deserve for allowing Serena to become like this. This must be karma.’
Grrrr!
The calamity was attacking him one second, and it stopped the next.
Rin watched a hole appear where the calamity’s heart had been. It tried to turn around, only to be engulfed in blue flames.
"You have done enough damage. Now sleep some more and make sure you repent for your actions in hell—not that you have a soul left in this shell anymore."
A soft yet masculine voice spoke, and Rin instantly looked toward the speaker.
The person who walked out from behind the burning calamity was tall, but his face and features were hidden behind a mask.
The mask also altered the person’s voice, giving it a mechanical tone.
"Are you alright, sir? Did that monster cause you any harm?"
Rin’s savior asked him, but Rin did not feel a shred of comfort watching the stranger walk toward him.
The stranger had a strange aura around him that made Rin nervous rather than relieved. He had a feeling that he should not get involved with this person or his life would become complicated.
’But as much as my instincts are telling me not to engage, can I truly ignore my savior? I would have died if not for this person.’
Rin reminded himself as he looked up at the person who finally reached him. They were slightly taller than him, but their frame was much more filled out.
He was not one to feel inferior, but Rin felt a stab of jealousy at that moment because of the other person’s physique.
’Darn it! This makes me feel jealous. Why can’t I gain muscles or fighting power even after training? Why do this person’s stats have to be so ridiculous?’
[A person cannot have it all, Rookie. You were blessed with the system’s presence, so your personal growth got sacrificed. Don’t you think it’s a fair trade?]
[No, don’t answer that question. This senior does not want to hear anything about it. Rather, this senior will give you some advice—don’t trust these people and do not listen to anything they have to say. It’s all a trap—]
The system got cut off halfway through speaking, and Rin looked toward the person in front of him, only to see them looking at where the system had been seconds ago.
"Now this is much better. Shall we have a talk now, Rin Kalos?"
