Chapter 445: 445 Resident Evil 5

We opened the iron door and proceeded further down the path.

Along the way, crows flew at us to attack, and zombie dogs jumped over fences, but we dealt with them safely and made it to the dormitory building behind the mansion.

"Spider, there’s a spider!!"

"Rebecca, really... I’ll remove it... Ugh!!!"

When Rebecca shouted there was a spider, Joseph acted like it was nothing and put on a proud expression again.

But the moment he saw where Rebecca was pointing, he was so startled he had to step back.

There, a giant spider at least 2 meters in size was standing its ground.

Such spiders were crawling all over the dormitory, creating a grotesque and horrifying scene.

"Damn, there’s not a single normal place here."

Bang, bang, bang! Boom, boom! Bang! Bang!

Without hesitation, we all aimed our guns at the spiders and pulled the triggers.

By now, all the members were used to such situations, and action came before words.

Fortunately, unlike the giant snake we fought earlier, these guys collapsed limply after only a few shots.

"Ugh, ptooey... spider hairs got in my mouth!"

"Ugh... Chris, keep that kind of thing to yourself."

Despite Chris having to spit out spider hairs, we managed to clear the spiders and began searching the dormitory.

"Everyone, come here! There are weapons!"

Jill had found something and called us over.

We followed her into a storage-like space and found not only various ammunition, but also a variety of weapons—submachine guns, pistols, shotguns—all neatly stored, unlike in the original.

This dormitory must have been used not only by researchers but also by security personnel.

"Oh, nice! I wanted a shotgun, so this is great."

Thanks to that, Jill was able to replace her old Winchester with an assault shotgun, and Chris and Rebecca, who didn’t have shotguns, were also able to get one each.

The biggest prize here, however, was the grenades and the unlimited rocket launcher.

I didn’t know why they were here, but when I picked one up to check, it wasn’t unlimited like in the game.

It looked like a mix of a grenade launcher and a sniper rifle, with a box magazine under the barrel.

It used four rocket warheads loaded in the magazine, effectively making it a semi-automatic rocket launcher that could fire four rounds in succession.

’As expected, it couldn’t really be unlimited.’

There was also a flamethrower, but Chris took that one.

"But why are there so many guns and ammo in a place like this? And heavy weapons too..."

"Right, it’s like they were stockpiled to fight something."

The members looked puzzled, but I could roughly guess the reason.

As a research facility studying various monsters, if a contained creature ever went on a rampage, standard firearms wouldn’t be enough.

They must have prepared these heavy weapons for emergencies.

We loaded up our magazines and took as much spare ammunition as we could carry.

Of course, I also stuffed my backpack full of grenades and various ammunition, and even hung a few grenades on my belt for quick access.

"We’ve got plenty of guns and ammo now. Let’s keep looking around."

"Yeah."

The members, thinking they’d gathered enough, resumed their search.

Buzz... buzz...

"Ugh, this is annoying. Why are there so many wasps?"

"With that many, there must be a nest nearby."

"Oh, there it is. They’re coming out of that hole in the wall over there."

"Should we set it on fire?"

"Idiot, the whole building could burn down."

"Would that be so bad? If there’s a fire, the search team would come, and we’d be comfortable..."

"Are you serious..."

Just then, Rebecca spoke up.

"There’s insecticide here. If we spray it inside, that should work."

"Oh, as expected of our angel!"

The wasp problem seemed to be handled by the members themselves.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

But then, gunshots rang out from outside.

"What was that?"

"Someone’s shooting outside. Maybe it’s Captain Wesker and Barry?"

At that, we hurried toward the direction of the gunfire.

There, Bravo Team’s leader, Captain Enrico, was limping with a gunshot wound to his leg, and the person who shot him quickly fled upon spotting us.

But it was too dark to see a face or even identify who it was.

"Captain Enrico!"

We quickly supported Enrico and brought him back to the dormitory building.

"Ugh... damn... Rebecca, Richard, you’re safe... and Alpha Team is here too."

"I’ll treat you right away."

"Yeah, thanks."

While Rebecca treated Enrico, Chris talked with him.

"We came here to find Bravo Team after hearing you’d lost contact."

"I see..."

"But Captain Enrico, who shot you?"

"One of us is a traitor. Listen closely. This is a research facility owned by Umbrella, disguised as a mansion. It’s a place where they research various monsters and viruses. I found out when I came here to investigate."

Everyone looked shocked at Enrico’s revelation.

"You mean Umbrella created those monsters?"

"Yes. And one of Umbrella’s researchers had infiltrated our organization."

"Then... the traitor is..."

"Wesker. I happened to see a photo of the researchers here, and Wesker was in it. I don’t know what his purpose was in luring us here, but at the very least, it wasn’t for any good reason."

This was quite different from the original.

In the original, Enrico only managed to say there was a traitor before getting killed.

But perhaps because we had arrived at the dormitory early by breaking through doors, we were able to save Enrico and hear the full story of the incident.

"I can’t believe it... Captain Wesker was the traitor..."

"Because of him, half of Bravo Team is dead. I even suspect he deliberately sabotaged the helicopter."

Just then, Rebecca finished bandaging Enrico’s leg and administered a painkiller.

"Fortunately, the bullet missed the major blood vessels, so it’s not life-threatening. He can walk slowly if necessary, but it will be painful."

"It’s painful right now."

"I’ve given you a painkiller. It should be bearable once it takes effect."

"Okay, thanks."

We sat down for a moment to discuss what to do next.

"What now? Should we try to get out of here?"

"You saw those infected dogs outside. With wounded people, we won’t last until morning."

"True. And we still need to find Barry, who went with Wesker."

Then Enrico offered his opinion.

"I know the way to the lab. There should be a way to contact the outside there. And if we find the research data, we can expose what they’ve been doing."

"Then that’s where we need to go. Captain Enrico, can you walk?"

"I’ll have to try."

I glanced at the end room of the dormitory.

During the search, Enrico’s appearance had prevented the members from checking that room, but that was where the giant plant monster ’Plant 42’ was located.

Chris had taken the flamethrower, so I thought dealing with it wouldn’t be a problem, but judging by the situation, it seemed we would just pass by.

’Well, it’s better to skip what we can skip.’

We supported Captain Enrico and moved back to the mansion.

Kyaaah!!!

"Damn, what are those reptiles!?"

"Stop talking and start shooting!"

Bang, bang! Boom, boom, boom!

The journey wasn’t smooth.

Finally, Hunter Alphas appeared.

Hunter Alphas looked like a cross between a human and a reptile, with sharp teeth and claws, and a tough hide like a crocodile.

But unfortunately for them, there were too many of us with shotguns.

"Phew... we finally got them all. How did Umbrella make these monsters in the first place..."

"I know, right. We don’t know what else might appear, so reload your spent magazines now."

We fought our way through the monsters and followed Enrico’s guidance through a passage beneath the mansion to the entrance of the lab.

Lisa Trevor was nowhere to be seen either.

The timing must not have been right.

Still, since we had opened the iron gate and unsealed the sarcophagus, she could probably find her mother’s remains on her own.

We were lucky up to that point, but the problem was entering the lab.

There were two ways in: opening the massive iron door, or draining the pool and going down below.

But since we weren’t on the normal route, both were difficult.

"This iron door is too thick for a shotgun. Captain Enrico, is there another entrance?"

"I don’t know. Let’s rest for a bit. It was hard enough getting here with a shot leg."

As Captain Enrico sat down to rest, the other members began reloading empty magazines or looking around.

Then Chris, examining the ornate pool next to the iron door, found something.

"Oh, there’s a device here for inserting something?"

At Chris’s words, the members gathered around to check.

On either side of the pool stood small stone statues, each with a device that looked like it could hold a circular disc.

"You’re right. It looks like some kind of round disc."

Just then, Enrico pulled a medal with a wolf motif from his pocket and held it up.

"Maybe this is it. Try it."

Chris took the medal and tried inserting it into the device.

Click!

"Huh? Nothing happened?"

"Right. The size and shape seem to match, but..."

Just then, Rebecca, who was examining the statue on the other side, waved her hand and spoke.

"There’s the same device here too."

"Really? So we need two. Captain Enrico, do you have another one?"

Enrico shook his head.

"I found this one by chance while exploring and kept it. This mansion is full of puzzles, so I thought I’d need it someday."

"So we need to find the other one..."

At that point, I spoke up.

"No, we don’t need to. From what I can see, it operates with sensors. We can just break the statue and mess with the sensors inside."

But Chris suddenly objected out of nowhere.

"Man, you have no sense of romance! Don’t you have any desire to enjoy treasure hunting or exploring!?"

"But the situation right now..."

However, Joseph went along with my idea and blasted the device on the other statue with his shotgun.

Bang, bang, bang!!!

"Oh, there it is! Some kind of mechanism and wiring. Just a moment..."

Joseph immediately started tinkering with the wiring.

Then a loud sound came from the pool, and the water suddenly started draining.

As an engineer, he was skilled enough to handle complex wiring.

The funny thing was Chris’s expression.

He looked like a child who had his favorite toy taken away.

"There’s a way down!"

"Really. To think they built such a device in a pool..."

We supported Captain Enrico and began descending below the pool.

"What are you doing, Chris! Hurry up!"

"Hah... yeah. Shotgun is a master key..."

Chris seemed to enjoy the process of solving things step by step.

’I guess he really is a Resident Evil protagonist.’

We followed the stairs that had been revealed as the water drained.

There was an elevator, and we took it to the lab.

Bang, bang, bang! Boom, boom!

"Damn, now it’s roaches?! Seriously, everything’s showing up!"

The monsters in the lab looked like grotesque creatures with roach-like bodies and human heads.

They hopped around attacking us.

They were chimeras created by combining human and fly genes.

For someone who hates bugs like me, they were creatures I could never welcome.

There were still many locked rooms, but we used our master key shotguns to break through one by one.

Eventually, we found what appeared to be a staff break room, and after letting Enrico rest there, we began resupplying.

"Seeing all these chemicals and strange organisms stored in test tubes, this is definitely the lab. We need to find evidence that can incriminate Umbrella."

When I said that, Jill asked, "Is Barry here too?"

"I hope so."

Leaving Enrico and Rebecca behind, we resumed our search.

This lab was unusual in that it was designed to use highly explosive nitro compounds as fuel.

Currently, due to insufficient power, the elevator to the upper floors was inoperable.

To restart the generator, we had to manually transport fuel capsules charged with nitro compounds from the lab and connect them.

"Careful, careful..."

"Aren’t you going too slow?"

"Then you carry it."

"...I’ll just shut up."

Click!

"Phew... done. Why would they use something like this as fuel... It’s a miracle this lab hasn’t exploded yet."

"I know, right. Crazy people use crazy fuel."

Just then, Jill called us.

"Jin, Chris, come here! There’s a door that won’t open. I need your help. The shotgun won’t work."

We went to the door Jill had mentioned.

There was a thick iron door and some kind of mechanism that seemed to need to be activated to open.

"Oh~ This one won’t work with a shotgun! We need to find a way quickly!"

Chris seemed delighted at the sight, but his expression quickly soured when I offered an opinion.

"Let’s just use grenades. It’s a waste of time."

I said that and began placing grenades on each hinge of the iron door.

Then I attached strings to the safety pins so we could detonate them from a distance.

"Ready?"

"Yeah..."

KABOOM! Thud!

We took cover in the hallway, out of the blast radius, and pulled the strings to blow the door.

A loud roar followed, and the iron door fell to the floor.

"Great, it’s open! Chris, let’s go."

"Hah... you don’t use dynamite for fishing, do you? Or a shotgun?"

"What are you talking about?"

"Nothing... let’s go."

Chris seemed to have a lot of complaints.

Anyway, we stepped over the fallen iron door and went inside.

There was a small prison cell, and Barry was locked inside.

"Barry!"

"You made it here. I’m glad..."

"Why were you locked up?"

"Wesker told me to take care of Captain Enrico if I wanted my family to be safe. But I couldn’t betray my teammates, so I didn’t do it. That’s why I ended up locked in here."

"I see... That bastard Wesker! Threatening him with his family."

Barry was probably the one who shot Enrico in the leg.

He had felt guilty and couldn’t carry out Wesker’s orders, so Wesker, fearing he would become a hindrance, locked him up here.

"Let’s go. Everyone’s waiting."

"Yeah."

We brought Barry back to the others.

"Barry, you’re safe!"

"Welcome back, Barry!"

"I’m glad you’re safe."

The members greeted Barry warmly, but seeing Enrico’s injury, Barry felt uneasy and confessed to Enrico what he had told us, apologizing.

"I understand. If my family were in that situation, I can’t say I would have acted differently. Besides, Rebecca said it’s not life-threatening and there won’t be any aftereffects."

"Thanks for saying that."

"In return, I hope you’ll help the others as much as you would have helped me."

"Understood. I’ll do that."

Enrico forgave Barry, understanding the situation.

Jill gave him her .44 Magnum revolver, and I gave him the grenade launcher and ammunition.

Since I had already duplicated the originals using [Matter Copy] and stored them in my inventory, it didn’t matter if I gave them away.
