After eating his fill, Wyatt Sterling was in a much better mood. After thinking it over, he decided to go to The Sterling Corporation first.
Right now, nothing was more important than stabilizing The Sterling Corporation’s stock price and its shareholders.
Once he left, how was Serena Sullivan supposed to break the trap Mrs. Kane had set!
Logically speaking, if Wyatt Sterling and Nina Monroe really had something between them, he ought to marry her.
But doing that wouldn’t be taking responsibility at all.
Two people without any feelings for each other, forced together because they’d been set up—none of them would end up happy.
If he didn’t marry her, Wyatt Sterling’s and The Sterling Family’s reputation would probably take a hit, and who knew what kinds of ugly stories Mrs. Kane would spin about him!
This was putting the Sterling heir over the fire and roasting him, forcing them to give in.
Where was the real crux of the issue!
It was Nina Monroe!
When Nina Monroe came to mind, Serena Sullivan’s eyes lit up.
She really did have a knack for this—just as she was thinking the key lay with Nina Monroe, her assistant came knocking again to say Miss Monroe wanted to see her.
Nina Monroe wanted to see her? Serena Sullivan was taken aback. She had no idea what scheme this Miss Monroe was running in her head, but since she’d come, Serena would have to see her.
"Let her in."
After Serena Sullivan spoke, it wasn’t long before Nina Monroe followed the assistant in.
"What do you want with me?"
She skipped the pleasantries and asked directly.
"You know exactly why I’m here."
Nina Monroe was just as blunt. She sat down across from Serena Sullivan and pressed her lips into a self-mocking smile.
"You and Mrs. Kane just finished setting my brother up, and now you come to see me—surely it’s not to force a marriage, is it?"
If they were really here to force a marriage, Nina Monroe wouldn’t have come alone.
Nor would they be meeting with Serena Sullivan.
"No."
Nina Monroe shook her head. "I’m very sorry about your brother."
Sorry?
Serena Sullivan found that apology almost funny.
"Things like this aren’t something a single ’sorry’ can make up for."
"Miss Monroe, I also don’t believe you’re innocent in all this."
Nina Monroe wasn’t an object, she was a living person.
Mrs. Kane had plotted against Wyatt Sterling; how could Nina Monroe possibly not know!
If she wasn’t an accomplice, she was at least cooperating.
"I didn’t come here to tell you I’m innocent."
Nina Monroe gave a faint smile. "Yes, when my mom was setting him up, I was right there."
Here, she switched and called Mrs. Kane "mom."
She knew the truth about her own origins.
"So you cooperated with Mrs. Kane to scheme against my brother!" Serena Sullivan shot back, displeased.
Before this, she hadn’t had any bad impression of Nina Monroe. But after what had happened with Wyatt Sterling being set up, looking at Nina Monroe now, Serena’s previous bit of fondness was gone.
"Miss Monroe, using a scheme to get yourself a marriage—do you really find that meaningful?"
"Even if my brother agreed to marry you, do you think the two of you would be happy afterward?"
"You wouldn’t have a good life in The Sterling Family either. For the sake of a man who doesn’t suit you, and a marriage that won’t bring you happiness—is all this worth it?"
Serena Sullivan fired off her questions in anger.
"It’s not worth it!"
Nina Monroe answered right after. Her response made Serena pause, and when she took a closer look at Nina, she realized how haggard the woman seemed.
Had she not slept all night?
"I’m very clear on what I’m doing."
Nina Monroe’s voice grew quieter. "But I don’t have a choice."
"No choice?"
Serena Sullivan’s tone cooled. "You have to curry favor with Mrs. Kane?"
Just like Felicity Sterling, who in order to please June Kane, had tried to seduce Ethan Grant and break them up even though she didn’t like him.
"Yes."
Nina Monroe nodded.
She looked at Serena Sullivan’s expressionless face. "I’ve actually known about you for quite a while."
"I really like your design work."
