Chapter 469: Rebirth of the Twin-Winged Water Demon Cat

Amid the flood of system notifications, Marcus moved toward the Soul Vase Ghost’s loot, ready to collect his rewards, but before he could reach it, something unexpected happened.

As the Soul Vase Ghost died, its body rapidly broke apart into wisps of gray spiritual energy. The once-arrogant ghost that had spent centuries devouring the souls of others was reduced to a weak, helpless soul, and then, with a sudden pull, it was dragged straight into the pet egg’s dark-blue vortex alongside the countless ghosts still pouring from the Soul Vase.

Marcus almost laughed. The thing had spent hundreds of years feeding on other souls, and now its own soul had become food. Talk about getting what it deserved.

As for the Soul Vase itself, it didn’t fall to the ground after its owner died. The artifact remained suspended in the air, still under the pet egg’s control, and the dark-blue vortex spun faster than ever as its suction force surged dramatically.

A moment later, the contents of the vase erupted outward. Thousands upon thousands of gray souls flooded into the sky like a broken dam releasing years of pressure. Ghostly cries filled the air as the souls spiraled helplessly toward the vortex, disappearing into it one after another.

"Holy..."

Marcus stopped in place. Around him, the surviving villagers were just as stunned. The sight before them was difficult to believe, yet what happened next was even more unbelievable.

In a little over ten seconds, the Soul Vase’s entire collection was emptied. More than one hundred thousand souls, gone. Every last one had been absorbed.

The dark-blue vortex finally slowed before disappearing altogether. The Soul Vase lost the force holding it aloft and dropped to the ground with a sharp clatter.

For a brief moment, silence returned.

Then the pet egg changed again. The giant cat projection above the egg suddenly brightened. Dark-blue energy surged around its body, and the water-like mark on its forehead released an intense glow.

"MEOW!"

The cat arched its back and bared its fangs. Then it began growing, larger and larger still.

Marcus watched without blinking.

"Is it finally hatching?"

But almost immediately, he realized that wasn’t what was happening. The cat’s body continued expanding until it reached the size of a tiger, and then strange bulges appeared on both sides of its back.

The protrusions pushed outward. A second later, two enormous wings burst free.

"Wings?!"

Marcus stared in disbelief. The wings were dark blue and covered in black feathers, unmistakably resembling those of the Twin-Winged Ice Owl.

The pet egg had absorbed the owl’s soul, devoured over one hundred thousand ghosts, and instead of hatching immediately, it had undergone another evolution.

"This thing is ridiculous."

For the first time in a while, Marcus felt genuinely impressed. No wonder the Water Moon Cult had treasured this creature so highly. Its potential was far beyond ordinary pets.

The transformation soon came to an end. The cat was now nearly twice the size of a tiger. Its body remained jet-black, with the blue forehead marking and blue stripe running along its back, but now a majestic pair of wings extended from its shoulders. The feathers were primarily black, matching its fur, while faint blue energy flowed through them.

It looked powerful without appearing ferocious.

"Not bad at all."

Marcus nodded in approval. Then another thought crossed his mind: Jade definitely wouldn’t be carrying this thing around anymore.

The giant winged cat suddenly rolled through the air in a playful spin, completely ruining the intimidating image it had built moments earlier. It circled happily overhead before diving back toward the pet egg below.

The instant it touched the egg, the massive projection dissolved into streams of blue light. All of that energy flowed back inside, and the egg began spinning once more.

Then a crack appeared.

Marcus’s eyes widened. "It’s hatching!"

This time he was certain.

Crack!

The shell split apart. A burst of dark-blue light flooded the area, forcing everyone nearby to shield their eyes.

"MEOW!"

A sharp cat cry rang out. Moments later, the light faded.

Floating in front of them was a kitten. It looked exactly like the giant cat projection from before, only greatly reduced in size. Its fur was black, the blue markings remained on its forehead and back, and a pair of tiny black-feathered wings fluttered continuously to keep it airborne.

After sleeping for a thousand years within the Purity Spring beneath Mist Veil Palace, the Soul-Mist Water Demon Cat had finally returned to the world.

The little creature clearly understood that fact. It darted around the air excitedly, swooping and circling as though unable to contain its happiness.

At that moment, the system notification arrived.

Ding!

[Congratulations, player Stonehaven. You have successfully hatched the Twin-Winged Water Demon Cat. Pet acquired. Pet name pending. Please name your pet.]

"Erm... Little Cat."

Marcus answered almost immediately. The name wasn’t particularly creative, but it was simple.

Still, one thing puzzled him. He had hatched a Soul-Mist Water Demon Cat, so why had the system identified it as a Twin-Winged Water Demon Cat?

"Meow!"

The kitten chirped happily and flew straight toward him. Its bright blue eyes were fixed on Marcus the entire time, and when it noticed the Seven-Colored Divine Eagle perched on his right shoulder, it fluttered over and landed on his left shoulder instead, as if claiming its own spot. Then it stretched out its tiny tongue and licked his cheek several times.

Marcus immediately recoiled. "Hey, stop that."

Despite his words, he was smiling. The little cat clearly liked him, and honestly, he liked it too. Compared to the gigantic winged beast from moments ago, this tiny version was far easier to love.

He reached up and scratched its head. The kitten narrowed its eyes comfortably and rubbed against his hand.

Only then did Marcus open its status screen.

Originally a Divine Beast known as the Soul-Mist Water Demon Cat. During its life, it suffered a catastrophic energy deviation that nearly resulted in death. Fortunately, it was placed within the Purity Spring, preserving its life. However, its strength collapsed, causing it to regress into a pet egg and lose most of its power.

After absorbing the soul of the Twin-Winged Ice Owl and devouring more than one hundred thousand ghost souls, it was successfully reborn. Due to the severe damage sustained from its original injuries, it could not fully absorb the Ice Owl’s soul, resulting in a mutation and the birth of the Twin-Winged Water Demon Cat.

Abilities

Soul Devourer (Passive): When killing an enemy, there is a 50% chance to devour its soul. If a soul is successfully devoured, all resurrection abilities become ineffective. Monsters must respawn normally, while players are forced to revive at their designated city respawn point.

Spectral Form (Passive): Grants high resistance to both Light and Dark elemental attacks and magic.

Soul-Seeker Cat (Passive): The innate ability of the Soul-Mist Water Demon Cat. Deals increased damage against Ghost and Demon-type targets. Possesses a strong instinctive attraction toward ghost souls, demon souls, and human souls.

Ice-Plumed Sky (Passive): The innate ability inherited from the Twin-Winged Ice Owl. All attacks gain additional Water-element damage and a chance to inflict Freezing effects.

Skills

Cat’s Grace (Advanced): Increases Speed, Accuracy, and Dodge as the Twin-Winged Water Demon Cat levels up.

Black Ice Arrow (Intermediate): Fires multiple Dark-element ice arrows at enemies.
