Chapter 42: Chapter 41: Not a Single Drop Left
It doesn’t belong to the God of Tiger.
Besides, Jari was a former betrayer, an entity opposed to the God of Tiger.
’So this [Misfortune Entry] can be cleansed!’
At the very least, if my abilities are ever exposed one day, I can claim to be a Chosen One with the God of Tiger as my backer.
’The deal with Catherine can proceed!’
The first rays of dawn filtered through the stained-glass window, spilling into the room.
Bathed in the morning light, Lian stretched languidly and climbed out of bed. Having made up his mind to acquire the Blue Moon Ore, he felt a sense of relief wash over him.
He decided to get his Physical Strength and condition in order to face his designated fiancée, Catherine.
"Sophie, were you watering the seed all night?"
Lian looked at Sophie, who was holding a watering can, a surprised expression on his face.
He remembered that Sophie had been watering it when he was lying in bed reading.
Now that he was up, Sophie was *still* watering it.
Sophie nodded earnestly.
She had been carefully nurturing this seed for several days, but it had yet to sprout.
Sophie believed it was because the seed hadn’t drunk enough water.
So last night, she had diligently and patiently helped the little seed drink its fill.
When Lian turned over the soil, he discovered the little seed had been soaked to a rotten pulp.
"Excellent, Sophie. Your seed will never sprout now," Annie praised. She had prepared a new set of clothes for Lian today.
She never tired of making clothes for Lian, so much so that the draft designs for her womenswear line were long overdue.
"Annie, you shouldn’t say that."
Anna chided her sister. She placed the prepared breakfast on the coffee table in the bedroom and said earnestly and politely,
"Miss Sophie, your seed is dead."
Hearing Annie and Anna’s words, a rare look of sadness and grievance appeared on Sophie’s deadpan little face.
’But I was so careful, so meticulous.’
’How could I have killed the seed?’
Lian sighed. ’Having a Guardian Witch try to grow flowers was asking too much.’ He patted Sophie’s shoulder.
"It’s alright. Maybe growing flowers isn’t for you. You could consider raising fish."
Hope rekindled in Sophie’s eyes. She gave a slight nod, indicating she was willing to switch to a new little companion.
"Everyone, if I were to suddenly have a fiancée, you wouldn’t be surprised or uncomfortable, would you?"
Although Lian maintained a purely platonic relationship with his maids and his bodyguard, Miss Sophie, he still felt it was necessary to tell them.
It was a matter of courtesy and respect.
’What if one of them can’t hold back and wants to confess to me?’
"Is it Catherine?"
Anna asked suddenly.
Lian paused, stunned. "How did you know?"
"It wasn’t hard to guess. You just saw Catherine yesterday, and today you tell us you’re getting a fiancée. There couldn’t be any other candidate besides her."
Anna said with a smile, a flicker of inexplicable excitement in her eyes.
Lian narrowed his eyes, looking at her suspiciously. "So, not only are you not angry, you’re actually happy?"
’Am I just that full of myself? Do the two maids actually have no feelings for me at all?’
Lian began to doubt his own Charm, until he saw the brightly shining [Sinful] entry above Anna’s head.
’Alright, so you like what belongs to others.’
’So until I’m another woman’s man, you won’t be interested, is that it?’
’What a big sister with a seriously weird kink.’
"Lord Lian will eventually marry and have children. That’s a perfectly normal thing," Anna said.
"You’re not going to get rid of us just because of Miss Catherine, are you?"
Annie was more direct than her sister; it was a matter of personality.
"Like Puppets to be thrown away after being used, our existence no longer has any value."
’Hmph. Just a moment ago she was being straightforward, and now she’s being all passive-aggressive.’
’That’s Annie for you.’
"Of course not. And when have I ever ’used’ you? Please don’t slander me."
"So you’re not throwing us away because you haven’t ’used’ us yet?"
Lian suddenly regretted talking to Annie. ’How did this conversation suddenly get so lewd?’
He glanced cautiously at Sophie, trying to detect any unusual emotion on her beautiful face.
’This reaction is a little different from what I imagined.’
’It seems we haven’t spent enough time together. The three lovely young women haven’t developed feelings for me beyond friendship or that of master and servant.’
"Sophie, what do you think of Catherine?"
Lian probed further.
Sophie shook her head and said in her cool, detached voice, "Witches are not allowed to marry."
Lian was slightly stunned. ’Witches aren’t allowed to marry?’
’That’s right. Witches are a special Power within the Empire. They are the Chosen Ones, possessing extraordinary Magic Power. They are natural-born Guardians. Even Witches who don’t join the Guardian Bureau, but instead enter the Church’s High Tower, must still participate in all sorts of battles.’
There is no room for love or marriage in their lives.
Furthermore, 90% of them don’t even live to adulthood, which means their time is limited.
Therefore, the laws of the Holy Empire forbid Witches from marrying, believing it would waste a Witch’s precious time.
In Lian’s opinion, this law was inhumane.
It essentially treated Witches as weapons, not as actual citizens.
No matter how much glory the Empire bestowed upon Witches, it couldn’t hide this fact.
As for why the Witches themselves readily accepted this law, besides the result of being brainwashed from a young age, there was another reason.
They knew from an early age that they wouldn’t live long, so they didn’t dare to hope for a life they could never have. They were afraid that if they formed attachments, it would be difficult to face death with peace of mind.
