Chapter 41: Chapter 41: Not a Single Drop Left
After the carriage entered the inner city, Lian dismissed Kob and his guards, keeping only Sophie and two maids to accompany him to the church.
Father Simo, who had already been resting in bed, was woken up yet again. Accompanied by Sally, he went to the church’s prayer room and saw the young Lord’s familiar, smiling face.
Whenever he saw that smiling face, Father Simo felt a headache coming on.
Because it meant Lian was here to make him work overtime again—the unpaid kind.
"There’s not a single drop of Holy Water left in the church. Not one drop."
Father Simo said, dark circles heavy under his eyes.
He said it with such practiced ease that one couldn’t help but wonder if he often used that line on the Enchanting Demon Nun.
"Don’t get me wrong, I’m not here for Holy Water, Father. I actually have a few questions for you."
Lian wore a humble, inquisitive expression.
’He’s not here to make me work overtime? That’s wonderful.’
’Just ask your questions quickly so I can get rid of you and finally get some rest.’
With this in mind, Father Simo forced a smile.
"My Lord, what is it you wish to know?"
"Are those with the Misfortune Physique truly people who have been cursed by a god?" Lian asked.
A flicker of surprise flashed in Father Simo’s deep-set eyes.
"If you ever encounter someone with the Misfortune Physique, you should stay far away from them. They will bring you nothing but endless trouble."
"Father, you still haven’t answered my question."
Lian needed to determine if the eye he had seen truly belonged to a god.
This would determine whether his deal with Catherine could proceed smoothly.
Father Simo slowly turned and left the prayer room. He returned about five minutes later, holding a book: the Holy Scripture Annals.
Father Simo handed the book to Lian. "The answer you’re looking for is in here."
"Thank you. I won’t disturb your rest any longer, Father."
Lian took the book and turned to leave.
’I originally thought this was some big secret, that I might even have to use my newly redeemed Master of Deceit entry. But judging by Father Simo’s attitude, it’s probably not a secret at all.’
’Does that mean I just wasted 1,000 Points?’
Once Lian and his party had left, Father Simo and Sister Sally entered the room.
"Do you think he’s discovered something?" Sister Sally asked.
"If he really knew something, he wouldn’t have left so easily."
Father Simo removed his pristine and solemn Divine Robe and sat on the edge of the bed. Sister Sally promptly sat on his lap.
"Why didn’t you just tell him the answer?"
"The Holy Scripture Annals is 564 pages long. If he wants the answer, he can find it himself."
"You know full well that anyone who isn’t a True Believer can’t possibly understand the Holy Scripture Annals. You’re just holding a grudge because he makes you work unpaid overtime. Oh, Simo, you’re even cute when you’re being so petty."
"Enough, Sally. I’m exhausted today. Let’s just rest in peace."
"Good night."
...
"Good night."
Back in his bedchamber, Lian said good night to the two maids and Sophie.
He lay in bed, not sleeping, and began to read the Holy Scripture Annals.
His Physical Strength was abundant and his mind was sharp; he wasn’t the least bit sleepy.
Since he rarely read theological works, the opening was dense and difficult to comprehend, but Lian pressed on.
He didn’t know if it was just his imagination, but Lian found that the more he read, the more engrossed he became. It was as if he was gradually coming to understand the God of Tiger, and every sentence he read was perfectly committed to memory, branded into his mind.
’Is this the effect of the True Believers entry? Or is there something wrong with the book itself?’
’Don’t tell me I’m being corrupted?’
’In this damned Extraordinary World, do I have to be this cautious even when I’m just reading a book?’
Lian focused his mind and checked his entries, finding no strange additions. This proved he hadn’t been corrupted.
He continued reading, staying up all night to finish all 564 pages, and finally found the origin of the Misfortune Physique.
The book recounted that the God of Tiger had three primordial believers who followed him: Jari, Dani, and Mohan. They became Tiger’s Forest Gods, but they betrayed the God of Tiger. As a result, Tiger rained down divine punishment, shattering their bodies. Jari was left with only an eye, Dani with only an ear, and Mohan with only a mouth.
This eye, called the Eye of Misfortune, continuously spreads Misfortune, plunging the world into Calamity.
This ear, called the Ear of Profanity, continuously spreads blasphemous whispers, driving the world into chaos and depravity.
This mouth, called the Enchanting Mouth, continuously utters beguiling words, driving the people of the world to madness and causing them to lose control.
The believers who once followed and worshipped Jari were also punished, becoming bearers of the Misfortune Physique.
Therefore, people with the Misfortune Physique aren’t cursed by the god; they are actually traitors to the god—worshippers of Jari.
As for those born with the Misfortune Physique, they are the ones chosen by Jari. Also known as traitors, their lives are never easy, and many do not survive to adulthood—a fate very similar to that of a Witch.
Although the book didn’t mention why Jari chose these people, Lian guessed there were likely two reasons.
First, to use them to exact revenge upon the world created by the God of Tiger.
Second, to use them to find a way to achieve his own Resurrection.
Lian closed the book and let out a long, slow breath.
’It seems the eye I saw was none other than Jari’s last remaining eye.’
