Chapter 247: The start of a new arc 5.
Azure Dragon City grew even more respectful toward the Su family after that.
Some were respectful because of gratitude.
Some because of fear.
Most because they finally understood that the Su family now stood under a protection too immense to challenge.
Still, personal strength alone was not enough. Mo Yuxin and Su Yubing also spent days establishing defensive formations around both the Su and Mo estates. They used spirit stones so high grade that even the family treasurers looked faint. Layer by layer, barriers settled into place beneath courtyards, walls, and gates.
One evening, while placing the final array flag near the Su ancestral hall, Mo Yuxin wiped her brow dramatically.
"I’ve decided," she said. "After this, if anyone dares break into the estate, they deserve whatever happens."
Su Yubing pressed the final seal into the formation. Lines of pale blue light spread outward under the ground and vanished. "If a Nascent Soul attacks, the formation will stall them."
"If a Soul Separation attacks, it’ll at least alert you two and buy time."
Mother Su, standing nearby, said quietly, "That is already beyond anything we could have imagined."
Mo Yuxin dusted off her hands. "Good. Then don’t waste it."
The next matter was resources.
They left storage rings for the Su family containing weapons, healing pills, talismans, spare spirit stones, and cultivation manuals suited for the family members’ aptitude. They also selected several loyal disciples and personally guided their training for a while, ensuring the next generation of the Su family would not collapse just because the strongest two had gone.
These lessons became the most terrifying and glorious days of those disciples’ lives.
Mo Yuxin taught like a storm.
She would demonstrate a movement once and say, "Again."
If they failed, she corrected them sharply but never cruelly. If they improved, she praised them with enough warmth to make them straighten with pride. Sometimes she sparred with them using only one hand and still sent them rolling across the field.
Su Yubing taught like ice.
Precise. Quiet. Ruthless in standards. If a stance was wrong by even a finger’s width, she noticed. If breathing was off by half a beat, she noticed that too. Yet because she rarely wasted words, every instruction hit with absolute clarity.
Soon the young disciples began calling them in private what the rest of the city already thought openly.
A pair of monsters.
A pair of legends.
A pair of terrifyingly beautiful wives no one should ever offend.
Mo Yuxin was delighted when she overheard it.
Su Yubing pretended not to be.
Their nights remained theirs alone.
No matter how busy the days were, once the doors closed and the lamps dimmed, they shed the weight of sects, families, preparations, inheritances, and future battles.
One night, rain tapped softly against the eaves.
Mo Yuxin lay with her head on Su Yubing’s chest, listening to the steady heartbeat beneath her ear. Their robes were loose, skin still warm from bathing, and the room smelled faintly of sandalwood and wet earth.
"You know," Mo Yuxin murmured, tracing circles over Su Yubing’s waist, "this is probably the calmest period we’ve had in a long time."
Su Yubing ran fingers through her hair. "And you’re suspicious of it."
"A little."
"Because it is peaceful?"
"Because every time life gets peaceful, something enormous usually follows."
Su Yubing was quiet for a moment. "Then we enjoy it while it lasts."
Mo Yuxin tilted her head up. "That sounded almost optimistic."
"It’s practical."
"Mm. My cold wife is learning."
Su Yubing pinched her lightly.
Mo Yuxin laughed, then lifted herself enough to kiss her properly. It started gentle, but neither of them was especially interested in staying gentle for long. The blanket shifted. Breathing deepened. Hands wandered with perfect familiarity and no hesitation at all.
Outside, the rain went on steadily.
Inside, the quiet peace of the room changed into something warmer, more intimate, more breathless.
Later, when they lay tangled together in the dark, Su Yubing’s voice came low beside her ear. "No matter what happens at the next Shenghuo Menkou, don’t separate from me."
Mo Yuxin’s hand found hers beneath the blanket and clasped it. "I won’t."
"You promise too easily."
"I mean it."
Su Yubing turned toward her. Even in near darkness, her eyes were clear. "So do I."
Mo Yuxin kissed the corner of her mouth. "Then that’s enough."
The city itself also benefited from their presence during those months.
Beyond the wolf pack, other troubles surfaced from time to time. A swamp serpent in the southern marshes. A nest of rock-backed boars uprooting farms near the northern road. A strange spirit bird whose cries caused ordinary people to fall into nightmares. To Mo Yuxin and Su Yubing these were tiny matters. To Azure Dragon City, they were disasters waiting to happen.
So the two of them handled each one.
Sometimes together.
Sometimes one went while the other stayed.
Whenever Mo Yuxin went alone, she returned faster than expected, often carrying some rare herb she had spotted on the way.
Whenever Su Yubing went alone, she came back with bloodless efficiency and not a single extra word.
On one occasion, they turned it into a proper outing.
The western foothills had become infested with ash-furred apes, fierce creatures with strong bodies and ugly tempers. The beasts had started harassing caravans, so Mo Yuxin suggested dealing with them before they became a larger nuisance.
"Let’s make a day of it," she said.
Su Yubing looked at her. "A day of killing apes."
"And then watching the sunset on the ridge."
"That sounds like something only you would call romantic."
Mo Yuxin clasped both hands dramatically over her heart. "Wife, don’t say that. It hurts."
In the end, they did exactly that.
They killed the apes by noon.
They spent the afternoon wandering the hills, picking spirit fruits and arguing over whether Mo Yuxin was cheating at identifying herbs faster through spiritual sense.
Then, at sunset, they sat side by side on a rocky ledge above the valley.
