Chapter 190: Chapter 190: Breaking Her Defenses

Nathan Fawcett glanced at Anne Sutton, nodded, and walked out.

Seeing him leave her here alone with Chloe Chase, Anne Sutton frowned.

Chloe Chase saw her staring in the direction Nathan had gone and said to Anne, "Don’t worry, Ms. Sutton. Your foot is fine. I’ll take good care of it for you."

Anne Sutton looked at Chloe Chase, realizing she had come over on purpose.

’She probably just doesn’t want to see me with Nathan, so she’s constantly hovering, making sure I never get a chance to be alone with him.’

......

Anne Sutton sat on the bed while Chloe Chase kept her company, trying to make small talk about anything and everything.

Anne really had nothing to talk to her about.

’She knew Chloe was only here for one reason: to keep her and Nathan apart.’

Even though Chloe’s attitude wasn’t bad on the surface, Anne didn’t believe for a second that she had any good intentions.

So, with Chloe here, she was so on edge she couldn’t even rest properly.

Anne said to Chloe, "I’m fine now. It’s getting late, why don’t you go home and get some rest?"

Chloe smiled. "What, are you trying to get rid of me?"

Hearing her words, Anne looked exasperated. ’Of course that’s what I mean!’

Anne didn’t say anything, tacitly agreeing.

Chloe said, "I was just afraid you’d be bored all by yourself, so I wanted to stay and keep you company."

Anne looked at her and said, "I’m not. I’m getting ready to sleep."

"Then you should sleep!" Chloe said. "I’ll stay here with you. I promised the young master I’d take good care of you. If I don’t, he’ll blame me later."

Anne looked at the woman, completely exasperated. ’Fine!’

’It’s like I can’t shake her off!’

Anne decided to ignore her and tried to go to sleep.

But just knowing Chloe was in the room, she couldn’t fall asleep no matter how hard she tried.

’And that jerk Nathan still hadn’t come back.’

’It’s as if he dropped dead outside!’

’If he came back, Chloe would leave, wouldn’t she?’

She grumbled internally. A long time passed, and it was probably only after Nathan had gone to bed himself that Chloe finally left the room.

Anne lay in bed and glanced at her phone. It was almost midnight!

......

’That Assistant Chase really is something else.’

’She’s going to such great lengths just to keep me from spending time with Nathan.’

As Chloe walked out the door, she saw Butler Walters standing nearby and asked, "Is the young master asleep?"

"He’s already gone to bed," Butler Walters said. "You should get some rest, too."

Hearing the butler’s words, Chloe visibly relaxed and finally left.

......

Since Anne’s foot was injured and she couldn’t go to the hospital, she had no choice but to rest at home the next day.

The housekeeper helped her downstairs for a meal.

Ian was there, too.

Anne asked, "Where’s your dad?"

"Dad went to work," Ian said, walking over to help her. "Anne, are you okay?"

Anne said, "I’m fine, don’t worry."

Hearing that, Ian asked, "So are you still going to work today?"

"No, I’m resting at home today." In her condition, she couldn’t go to the hospital anyway.

Anne sighed in resignation.

’I’ll probably need to rest for two days.’

......

For the two days she was resting, Nathan came home very late and never came to see her.

It was always Chloe who took care of her.

Chloe sat beside her, peeling fruit for Anne, and said, "The young master just got back."

Anne heard Chloe’s words, glanced at her, and said, "Oh."

Chloe said, "He came back to see the young master and then went straight to bed."

"..." Hearing this, Anne said, "Is that so?"

Chloe said to Anne, "You can see it too, can’t you? You aren’t important to him. You’re injured, and he doesn’t even bother to come see you."

"..." Anne said to Chloe, "Thank you for telling me. Otherwise, I would have been kept in the dark forever."

Chloe detected the sarcasm in her voice and said, "I’m just giving you a friendly reminder. You and the young master aren’t a good match. Forcing it won’t lead to anything, so it’s better not to desire things that don’t belong to you."

Anne didn’t say anything.

Even though Chloe was telling the truth, it was still unsettling to hear.

The main issue was Nathan. His attitude was also making her miserable.

’He just dumped me on someone else. While I didn’t expect him to take care of me himself, it would have made me feel a little better if he had at least stopped by to check on me.’

Anne leaned back against the bed, her mood suddenly souring for reasons she couldn’t quite pinpoint.

’She didn’t know why she was starting to care so much about how he treated her.’

’I know full well that men are no good, so what am I even hoping for?’

......

Chloe left early today. Perhaps she’d realized Nathan paid Anne no mind, so she went out.

Anne lay in bed, but couldn’t fall asleep.

’It felt like she’d just been schooled for no reason at all!’

......

In the middle of the night, she had just fallen asleep when the bed suddenly dipped. She woke up instantly.

Anne opened her eyes and saw Nathan getting into bed and lying down beside her.

Seeing him, her eyes went wide. After a moment, her gaze shifted, and she asked, "What are you doing here?"

Nathan glanced at her. "How’s your foot?"

Hearing his question, Anne said sarcastically, "It’s great! With Assistant Chase looking after me, how bad could it be? Barring any surprises, I’ll just need one more day of rest before I can go back to work."

Nathan looked at her. "That’s good."

After saying that, he lay back down. Anne stared at his cold profile and said to him, "Nathan Fawcett, I want a divorce."

"..." Hearing those words, Nathan froze for a moment and looked at Anne.

He stared at her. "What are you talking about all of a sudden?"

Anne said, "I know you’re Ethan Linden now, but I still want to divorce you. I can’t do this anymore!"

’We live together.’

’We sleep together.’

’Our relationship is a mess, and it has no future.’

’Before, when I thought Nathan was dead, I cared about him so much.’

’Now I know he’s alive, but this isn’t how I wanted things to be at all.’

’The way he is now... it was better when he was dead!’

’So, I really don’t want to go on like this.’

Nathan heard her words and said, "Nathan Fawcett is dead. Our marriage was legally dissolved. You can leave whenever you want."

"..." Hearing his response, Anne retorted, "Then get out right now. I don’t want to sleep with you. Just looking at you annoys me! We’re not husband and wife, so what are we doing sleeping together like this?"

Nathan glanced at her as if she were having a fit, ignored her, and simply closed his eyes.

Anne looked at his cold indifference, feeling as if everything she said and did was nothing but a joke to him.

Her emotional defenses shattered in an instant...

Anne’s eyes suddenly welled up with tears. She yelled at Nathan, "Get out! You seemed to sleep just fine somewhere else these past two days! Weren’t you perfectly content to dump me on someone else? Why do you get to come and go as you please? Why do you insist on keeping me by your side, just to mess with my head?"
