Chapter 188: Chapter 188: It Won’t Affect You, Right?
"I’m busy."
"You’ve barely been at the company these past few days. I heard you’re at the hospital taking care of that hag of yours?"
"Watch your mouth!" Sean Sutton’s face darkened. He glanced guiltily at Anne Sutton. Seeing Anne standing off to the side, he grew nervous, even though she was far away.
He asked, "What do you want?"
"I’m calling to tell you that our Yvonne is being bullied. Are you going to do something about this or not?"
"Bullied?" Sean Sutton said. "Who would dare bully her?"
"What do you mean, who would dare?" Maya Evans said from the other end. "She’s been fired! And I heard it was your eldest daughter who did it! She’s really something else! No other skills to speak of, but first-class when it comes to bullying!"
"That’s not true!" Sean Sutton said.
"How is it not true?" Maya Evans said. "Yvonne has been crying ever since she got home; she hasn’t even eaten dinner! You, her father, don’t care about her at all. All you know is how to take care of that hag of yours at the hospital! I don’t care! If you can’t get her job back, I’m not done with you."
Yvonne Evans had a lot of clout among her classmates for joining the Fawcett Group, and everyone really admired her.
Now she had lost a perfectly good job. If people found out, she would lose face completely, so she was very upset about it.
Sean Sutton said, "Just have her find another job! I’ll ask around about what happened at the Fawcett Group."
But once someone was fired, it was difficult to go back.
"No!" Maya Evans said. "Your daughter did this. You’re her father, so what, she won’t listen to you?"
Sean Sutton found Maya Evans incredibly annoying and simply hung up the phone.
He walked back over, saw Anne Sutton still standing there, and said, "Work is just so busy."
"If you’re so busy, then you should go be busy with work," Anne Sutton said, looking at him coldly.
Ever since she was little, her father had always said he was busy with work, and she had believed him.
But it turned out he was indeed busy—not with work, but busy having an affair, busy having children with another woman.
Sean Sutton said, "It’s not important. I’m here at the hospital today to take care of your mother."
Nathan Fawcett had given him a heads-up, so of course Sean Sutton had to take good care of her.
His company was now entirely dependent on Nathan Fawcett’s backing.
No matter how stupid he was, he wouldn’t dare offend Nathan Fawcett.
He said to Anne Sutton, "You should go home for now. Your mom is still angry with you. She heard you’re with Ethan Linden, so she doesn’t even want to see you. I’m already working on her."
In reality, Mrs. Sutton hadn’t been as angry these past two days. However, Sean Sutton was afraid Anne Sutton would run to her mother and say something she shouldn’t, so he figured it would be less trouble to just keep them from meeting.
Anne Sutton looked at his duplicitous act, fuming inside, but didn’t know what to say. So, she just turned and left.
...
Sean Sutton only breathed a sigh of relief after she left.
He entered the hospital room, checked on Mrs. Sutton, and helped her finish dinner. After leaving her with the family’s hired help, he finally left the hospital and went to Maya Evans’s place.
Maya Evans was still knocking on a door. "Yvonne, come on out! Come out and eat something. Stop crying. I already called your dad. He’ll take care of it."
Sean Sutton walked in the door and asked, "What’s going on?"
Maya Evans turned her head and glared at him. "You’re still asking what’s going on? I was starting to think you weren’t coming!"
After speaking, she patted the door and said to Yvonne Evans, "Yvonne, your dad’s here!"
Soon, Yvonne Evans opened the door and came out. Seeing Sean Sutton, she hugged him tearfully. "Dad! Anne Sutton bullied me! She knew I was at the company and had me fired on the spot! It’s not like she’s the one who got me the job, what right does she have to treat me like this?"
Sean Sutton looked at Yvonne Evans and said, "She said you were causing trouble for her at the company. Is that true?"
Hearing this, Yvonne Evans froze for a second. ’Damn it,’ she thought, ’I can’t believe Anne Sutton already snitched on me.’
She said, "No, how could that be possible? I’ve never even seen her there, why would I cause trouble for her? I just happened to run into her today. She recognized me, and since she can’t stand to see me doing well, she had me fired."
She would never admit she was the one at fault.
Now, in front of her father, she naturally pushed all the blame onto Anne Sutton.
Yvonne Evans said, "It’s so unfair! We’re both Dad’s daughters, but she’s been the young miss since birth, while I can’t even take his last name. I have to hide and live with my mom. And now she’s bullying me like this!"
Listening to their two different stories, Sean Sutton didn’t know who was right and who was wrong.
He just tried to placate Yvonne Evans, "Yvonne, the Fawcett Group isn’t a good fit for you, so let’s just forget about it. Anne came to see me today, too. She knows about this and is very angry now. Even if you went back, she would just kick you out again! From now on, if you don’t want to work, you don’t have to. Dad will buy you whatever you want. But you can’t afford to offend her!"
"Why?" Yvonne Evans said. "I want to be a useful person, too, so people don’t say I’m just living off my parents. She’s your daughter, so how dare she cause trouble for you? If it weren’t for you, where would she be today?"
"Exactly," Maya Evans said.
Sean Sutton shot her a glare, then said to Yvonne Evans, "Dad has already done his best on this. Since you’re out, just stay out. There’s nothing great about working anyway."
The Fawcett Family’s affairs were too complicated. Charles Prescott had already helped him once before; he couldn’t possibly help him a second time.
Even if Charles was willing to help, he couldn’t bring himself to ask.
After all...
This whole business with an illegitimate daughter was rather shameful to bring up.
Maya Evans said, "All these excuses, you just look down on our Yvonne! Let me tell you, Sean Sutton, if you keep this up, I’ll make sure you never see Yvonne and Dylan again."
Dylan was their son!
Besides his three daughters, Sean Sutton also had a son, born to him and Maya Evans.
The son was still young, but he was Sean Sutton’s heir.
That was why he treated Maya Evans quite well.
Hearing her threaten him with their son, Sean Sutton helplessly started to placate Maya Evans. "You..."
...
When Anne Sutton returned home, she saw Nathan Fawcett teaching Ian how to write.
She walked in, put her things on the sofa, and felt utterly exhausted.
"Mommy, what’s wrong?" Ian said.
Nathan Fawcett also glanced at her.
"It’s nothing, I’m just tired," Anne Sutton said. "I want to rest for a bit."
"How’s your mother?" Nathan Fawcett asked.
"I didn’t see her," Anne Sutton said. "My dad said she doesn’t want to see me right now."
She looked at Nathan Fawcett. Her mother was only so opposed because she didn’t know that Ethan Linden was actually Nathan Fawcett.
If she knew, things would probably be much better.
Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne Sutton and said, "If you’re worried, I’ll go with you to see her later and explain things clearly."
"Thank you," Anne Sutton said. "Let’s go whenever you’re free, then. But... it won’t affect you, will it?"
