Chapter 183: Chapter 183: Taking the Child to the Company
Nathan Fawcett said, "You can get out now!"
Hearing this, Stella Shields didn’t leave. Instead, she turned to Anne Sutton and said, "Anne Sutton, do you really think Nathan loves you? He could never love you! You’re the woman he despises and hates most in this world. You don’t deserve to be treated well by him! One day, he’ll be with someone else—not you! Because you’re not worthy!"
Ian looked at Stella Shields and said, "Don’t you talk about my mommy."
Hearing Ian’s words, Stella Shields looked at him and sneered, "So what if I talk about your mother? You poor little idiot, your mother doesn’t even want you! You’re just a motherless child."
"...Stella Shields!" Nathan Fawcett’s voice had grown grim.
The butler and Chloe Chase had both come downstairs. Hearing Nathan’s voice, the butler hurried over to him. "Sir."
Chloe Chase walked over to Stella Shields’s side and looked at her. "Ms. Shields."
She had heard from Nathan yesterday that Stella was bullying Ian, but she hadn’t believed it. She never would have thought that upon arriving today, she’d hear Stella say such things to Ian right in front of Nathan!
She said to Stella, "I know you’re upset, but you can’t just speak so recklessly! Nathan will get angry if you keep this up."
"Let him be angry! What am I afraid of?" Stella had thrown caution to the wind. "I care about him more than anyone, but he only likes this heartless, faithless woman."
Nathan’s face was dark. ’If Chloe Chase hadn’t appeared just in time,’ he thought, ’I might have actually strangled this woman!’
Afraid that Stella would only make things worse by continuing to speak, Chloe said to Nathan, "I’ll take Ms. Shields home first."
With that, she dragged Stella Shields out the door.
Once outside, Chloe looked at Stella and said, "You know full well this will make Nathan despise you. Why do you do it?"
Stella said, "I just can’t stand the way he protects Anne Sutton! Back then, when Anne thought he was gone, she immediately tried to get rid of the child. If Ian hadn’t been so lucky, he wouldn’t be here today! Am I wrong? He’s just forgotten all the pain. I can accept him being with anyone, anyone but Anne Sutton."
Chloe said, "I know you feel he’s been wronged, but he needs to be the one to see it. This behavior doesn’t benefit you at all."
Chloe’s words made Stella feel aggrieved. "But I really don’t know what to do! Anne Sutton is the child’s mother, and Ian likes her. Even if Nathan doesn’t love her, he’ll still be good to her for the child’s sake."
It had gotten to the point where she was always thinking, ’If only this child didn’t exist!’
Without the child, none of this would exist.
"Don’t worry," Chloe said. "All Anne Sutton wants is everything the Fawcett Family has. Once the Fawcett Family’s affairs are settled, Nathan has to return to the Linden Family, and Anne Sutton won’t follow him. Even if she did, the matriarch would never approve. What you need to do now is ease the tension between mother and son, not escalate it, understand? You went and tattled to the matriarch. Yes, she reprimanded Nathan, but what good did that do you? If one day they have a real falling out and Nathan is no longer the Head of the Linden Family, would that make you happy?"
Stella looked at Chloe. "Mrs. Chase, that’s not what I was thinking. Of course I want what’s best for Nathan. He’s been doing quite well in the Linden Family these past few years, hasn’t he?"
Chloe said, "If you don’t think that way, then stop constantly opposing him. That’s not what a smart woman would do. The matriarch likes you and has always hoped you and Nathan would get together. Why are you so concerned with short-term wins and losses? If you really want to compete, can you even win? Anne Sutton still has a child."
Hearing Chloe Chase’s counsel, Stella said, "I understand. How is Auntie doing?"
"She has a headache from being so angry about Nathan and Anne’s situation. That’s why she sent me. You need to be more sensible, too."
Stella nodded. "I know. I won’t go tattling anymore."
"Good."
...
After Chloe and Stella left, Anne looked at Nathan. He was holding Ian. Noticing her stare, he turned and set Ian down on the table.
Anne brought out breakfast and asked Nathan, "I didn’t quite understand what Stella Shields was saying just now. What did she mean?"
Nathan said, "It was nothing. Wasn’t it just about you getting with Charles Prescott and trying to abort the child?"
His mood soured at the mention of it.
When he was with Anne, he would sometimes manage to forget what had happened.
But...
The moment someone brought it up, he would remember everything—remember how he had carried Ian out of the operating room himself—and his mood would plummet.
Anne looked at Nathan. "I know I wronged you in that matter. But... she can say what she wants about me. Why bring Ian into it?"
Ian sat to the side, looking at her with an innocent expression.
Anne continued, "Stella Shields is interested in you, she likes you... I can understand her hating me, but I really don’t get why she’s targeting Ian. Is it because his mother is also someone she hates?"
Nathan glanced at Anne. "Just ignore her."
"But she wasn’t actually wrong," Anne said. "We’ll have to separate sooner or later, right?"
"Perhaps." Nathan sat down and said to Anne, "Let’s eat. I have to go to the office later. You should come with me. Aren’t you very concerned about everything at the company? Once things here are wrapped up, I have to go back to Veridia, too."
Anne looked at him. Hearing him say he was going back to Veridia reminded her that they were now from two different worlds.
He would leave here eventually.
...
Anne glanced at Ian and placed some food on his plate. "Eat up, Ian."
Ian looked at Anne, then at Nathan, feeling that the two of them were talking about things he didn’t understand.
Ian asked, "Daddy, can I go to the company with you? I want to go, too. I’m all better now."
He had been sick the last few days, so Nathan hadn’t dared to take him running around everywhere, but his body was fine now.
Hearing this, Nathan nodded. "You can."
"That’s great!"
...
After breakfast, Nathan led them out the door.
Once at the company, Nathan went to get to work, while Anne took Ian to look around.
The Fawcett Group’s main business was now automobile manufacturing. Ian wanted to see the models, so he asked Anne to take him.
Coming out of the elevator, Ian ran ahead and bumped into someone, landing right on the floor.
Seeing Ian get knocked down, the other person didn’t apologize. Instead, she snapped angrily, "What’s this? Who brings a child into the office!"
Seeing Anne, she continued, "Children aren’t allowed at the company. Who are you? You’ve got some nerve. Believe it or not, I’ll file a complaint against you!"
