Chapter 182: Chapter 182: Treating Her Like a Daughter
Chloe Chase walked over with a smile, sat down, and said to Nathan Fawcett, "You argued with your mother, and she’s absolutely furious. She sent me to check on you. Nathan, you’re really making her worry herself sick! Do you have any idea how close she was to coming here herself this time? If she had, wouldn’t you two have had a complete falling out?"
Nathan Fawcett said, "If she wants to have a falling out, that’s fine with me. It’s not like anything I do ever makes her happy anyway."
"Nathan!" Chloe Chase said. "I know you feel wronged, but it hasn’t been easy for your mother, either. She really does love you! Haven’t you two been getting along pretty well these last few years?"
Nathan Fawcett said, "She’s the one who has never been satisfied with me."
"That’s not true!" Chloe Chase said. "She’s always loved you! In private, she often tells me how well you’ve done since taking over the company."
Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett said, "I’m not a child. You don’t have to humor me."
Chloe Chase said, "I’m not humoring you. Everything I said is true. It’s just... for her, anything related to the Fawcett family is an absolute red line. The old feud between her and your father makes her resent these matters, so don’t take it personally."
"This has nothing to do with the Fawcett family," Nathan Fawcett said. "It’s simply because she doesn’t like me. That’s why everything I do is wrong in her eyes!"
The housekeeper brought over a bowl and chopsticks, setting a place for Chloe Chase.
Chloe Chase said, "Thank you," but didn’t pick up her chopsticks.
She sat to the side and said to Nathan Fawcett, "I’ll be staying here for a few days. I hope I won’t be a bother."
Nathan Fawcett glanced at her. "What, you don’t have to be at my mother’s side keeping her company?"
He knew Chloe Chase had always been Anna Linden’s right-hand woman.
’To think Anna Linden would actually send Chloe here this time.’
Chloe Chase said, "These are my orders. Just let me stay for a couple of days."
"..." Her gentle tone made it difficult to refuse.
After all, deep down, Nathan didn’t hate his mother as much as he let on.
That’s just how people are most of the time.
The more you can’t have something, the more you want it.
He never received his mother’s love as a child, so even now, as a father himself, he still harbored a lingering attachment that he couldn’t easily let go of.
Anne Sutton sat to the side, observing Chloe Chase. ’Compared to Anna Linden’s unyielding nature, she’s much more diplomatic.’
When she put it that way, Nathan found it hard to refuse.
’But she’s going to be staying here?’
After dinner, Chloe Chase and Nathan Fawcett left the dining room and went into the living room.
Anne Sutton stayed with Ian until he finished eating, then took him upstairs to rest.
As she passed by, she overheard Chloe Chase say to Nathan, "I don’t know what happened between you and Ms. Shields, but your mother has been very close to her these past few years. She’s always treated her like her own daughter. You shouldn’t be too hard on her. Especially since I’ve heard you’re now putting pressure on her at work."
Nathan Fawcett said, "I’ve been looking out for her all these years. For Ethan’s sake, I’ve treated her well. But... she bullied Ian. Am I not allowed to teach her a little lesson?"
Chloe Chase said, "You’re saying Ms. Shields bullied Ian? How could that be?"
Nathan said, "You don’t have to believe me. You’ll know it when you see it with your own eyes."
"If that’s true, then Ms. Shields was indeed out of line. She’s still young and doesn’t know how to care for a child. It’s probably because she’s not a mother herself. But she isn’t a bad person."
Nathan Fawcett said, "I don’t know what my mother is thinking, but if she feels the Shields family is more important than Ian and me, then I have nothing left to say."
"How could that be?" Chloe Chase said. "You’re her son, and Ian is her own grandson. You’re her family. Of course, no one else can compare."
Anne Sutton looked down at Ian and said, "Let’s go upstairs."
Ian nodded. "Okay."
His little legs carried him as he ran off quickly.
Watching him go, Anne Sutton smiled.
...
The next morning, Stella Shields arrived.
Nathan Fawcett had humiliated her at her mother’s birthday party, so she hadn’t wanted to come.
But now...
Chloe Chase was here!
Chloe Chase worked for Anna Linden. Now that she had someone to back her up, of course she was going to show up.
Anne Sutton was in the kitchen making breakfast for Ian. When Stella walked in and saw her, her expression immediately turned cold.
Whereas before she might have been civil to Anne Sutton, now she didn’t want to say a single word to her.
After all, if it hadn’t been for Anne Sutton, she wouldn’t have been so utterly humiliated at her mother’s birthday party.
Stella Shields walked straight to the sofa and sat down. The butler saw her and said, "Ms. Shields."
Stella Shields said, "I’m here to see Mrs. Chase."
The butler said, "Please wait a moment, Ms. Shields. Assistant Chase is likely still asleep."
"I’m in no hurry," Stella Shields said. "I’ll wait for her right here."
The butler said, "Very well."
Stella grew bored of waiting, so she stood up and walked to the kitchen doorway. Looking at Anne Sutton, she said, "So this is your game? Playing the part of the perfect wife and mother to make Nathan so protective of you?"
Hearing this, Anne Sutton glanced at Stella Shields and said, "If I recall correctly, I believe he told you not to come here anymore. Because Ian doesn’t want to see you."
"I’m not here to see you!" Stella Shields retorted. "I’m here to see Assistant Chase. Assistant Chase works for his mother. Surely you don’t think you’re more important than Nathan’s mother, do you? You know perfectly well how devoted he is to her. If you have the nerve, go on, get Nathan to throw me out!"
Her smug expression was practically begging for a slap.
Having been wronged last time, Stella was now acting recklessly, with no regard for her own image.
Just then, Nathan Fawcett came downstairs, carrying Ian in his arms.
He knew Anne was up making breakfast, so he’d hurried downstairs with his son to eat.
He arrived just in time to see Stella Shields provoking Anne. "Is that right?" he said.
Stella turned to see Nathan standing there, still holding Ian. The moment Ian saw Stella, he turned his face away, clearly not wanting to look at her in the slightest.
Caught in the act by Nathan, Stella was completely unabashed. "What, I say a few words to her and you feel sorry for her, Nathan? Have you forgotten what this woman did to you all those years ago? If it weren’t for her, Ian—"
"Shut up!" Seeing that she was about to reveal what happened with Ian, Nathan cut her off immediately.
Stella sneered. "You’re so protective of her. If you have the guts, then go ahead and marry her! I refuse to believe you’d actually bring her into the family. If you two really get married, then fine. I won’t say another word."
She refused to believe that Nathan was no longer bothered by what had happened back then.
Anne Sutton stood to the side, listening to Stella’s tirade and glancing at Nathan...
’I can’t shake the feeling that they’re talking about something I don’t understand.’
