Chapter 2309: Chapter 2309 Delayed Reinforcement

Inside the city, the brutal battle raged on, yet Ye Liuyun and his companions could only watch from the sidelines.

Ye Liuyun had his eyes glued to the Sound Transmission Talisman, fearing he might miss their call for help, but it remained eerily silent.

The local martial practitioners’ death toll quickly approached thirty thousand. Yet, there was still no sign of them requesting reinforcements.

The local martial practitioners could not move forward without stepping on the corpses of their fallen comrades.

Out of nowhere, the Sanctuary Knight commander gave the order, and reinforcements from their central army rushed forward, charging into the battle. They easily drove the local martial practitioners backwards, giving the defending soldiers a breather to recover.

The Sanctuary Knights had been replaced with a new wave of troops, while the local martial practitioners’ genuine energy was almost depleted.

Their attack grew weaker, and those who charging forward were basically marching to their deaths.

As the charging progressed, the commander ordered his troops to counterattack.

As the soldiers advanced, they inadvertently gave the local martial practitioners an opening. These warriors, driven by sheer desperation, ignited their virtuoso, determined to take as many enemies with them as possible.

The attack became intense as one local martial practitioner took on one Sanctuary Knight, finally disrupting their formation.

"Charge!"

The martial practitioners roar in unison. Tens of thousands of them, with their virtuoso ablaze, plunged into the enemy formations, determined to fight to their death. Their suicidal attack effectively neutralized the enemy’s formation.

Seeing the enemy’s formation dissolve, the other martial practitioners immediately seized the opportunity, surging forward to deliver devastating blows to the Sanctuary Knights.

"Damn these insects! Hold the line!"

The Sanctuary Knight’s commander cursed. He did not expect that these martial practitioners would resort to such a suicidal tactic and dragged his soldiers down with them.

He mobilized another group of defensive soldiers from the central army to form a new defensive line. As for the previous defense troops, they could not be recalled anymore. They were left in the field to fight until the last of them.

The fierce battle had drained the local martial practitioners of their strength. Their three-sided surround had now converged into a single front attack.

Ye Liuyun scrutinised the remaining forces. They were down to merely about thirty to forty thousand men.

The battle had reached a stalemate. The Sanctuary Knight had just suffered a significant loss and was hesitant to launch another reckless assault.

"Is it our turn yet?" Zhao Hu and others speculated, still waiting on the sidelines.

However, the Sound Transmission Talisman remained silent. Ye Liuyun and his comrades were growing increasingly disappointed with the local martial practitioners.

The local martial practitioners were busy consuming Elixirs, trying to recuperate as quickly as possible.

But the stalemate didn’t last long. The Sanctuary Knight dispatched another unit from their central forces, breaching the Local Martial practitioner’s defensive line and launching an aggressive attack, denying the locals any chance to catch their breath.

In response, countless local martial practitioners charged forward without hesitation, expending all their genuine energy and even igniting their virtuoso. They threw themselves at the enemy with reckless abandon, barely defending themselves, determined to strike the soldiers at the cost of their lives.

This suicidal tactic left the Sanctuary Knights with no choice but to kill as many of them as they could.

This desperate strategy, however, allowed the local martial practitioners to achieve a kill ratio of one to three, a significant improvement over previous engagements.

However, after many waves of suicidal assaults, their numbers had diminished to below 20,000.

Zheng Huan had repeatedly urged the elders of their Alliance State to send reinforcements, but each time his pleas were rejected.

"We, warriors of Sirius Realm, must carve out our glory and avenge our brethren with our own hands!" the elders declared with righteous fervor.

Because he couldn’t influence the elders’ standing, Zheng Huan had no choice but to wait for their commands.

The once twenty-odd martial practitioners by his side had dwindled to a mere seven or eight.

At this crucial point, the armies from the Sanctuary Knights changed their formation and pressed the local Martial practitioners up against the city wall. Hence, the local martial practitioners risked being annihilated if they didn’t flee now.

Yet, having fought their way in with great difficulty, they could not back down now.

"We will fight to death! Charge!"

Several elders from the Alliance State personally led a group of martial practitioners into the fray.

Zheng Huan and his companions were held back, as the Sound Transmission Talisman was in Zheng Huan’s hand. Even in such a dire state, the Alliance State had an elder assigned to monitor him, preventing him from calling for reinforcements.

"Elder, if we don’t call for help now, we’ll be exterminated. Even if Ye Liuyun comes to our aid, he will take some time to arrive. If we can’t hold out, their attack would have to start from zero!" Zheng Huan pleaded with the elder.

"Let them start from zero then! We’ve lost so many, and their strength is formidable. Even if we don’t wear down their troops, it won’t benefit us anyway!" the elder replied coldly.

Zheng Huan was taken aback by the elder’s ruthless rationale.

The thundering clamour of battle and the clash of genuine energy soon ceased once more.

The latest wave of martial practitioners being dispatched into the field had once again been wiped out by the Sanctuary Knights.

The Sanctuary Knights forces also suffered significant casualties. The previous wave of soldiers who fought began to retreat, making way for the next wave for another assault.

At this moment, the last of the Alliance State elders stepped forward, leading half of the remaining martial practitioners, ready to plunge into the battle.

"Once we perish, you must immediately leave the city and seek Ye Liuyun’s aid," the elder instructed Zheng Huan.

"Are we going to let them attack the city all over from the start again?" Zheng Huan felt uneasy about this plan.

"You have to do this! Otherwise, you’ll be branded a traitor to the Sirius Realm!" the elder threatened.

"Fine," Zheng Huan had no choice but to agree.

With that, the elder led his troops of martial practitioners in a charge.

Zheng Huan was left with the last five thousand martial practitioners with him.

Meanwhile, the group around Ye Liuyun began to mumble among themselves.

"Are they planning to go all out and die there?"

"The remaining five thousand won’t make much of a difference!"

"Should we initiate the move? Otherwise, we’ll have to break through their defensive Formations from the start again later."

Ye Liuyun, however, remained calm and analyzed the situation with Ye Tiandao, Yuan Hao, and the Tiger King.

"It appeared as if they’re trying to make us break through the defenses all over again." Yuan Hao said to Ye Liuyun.

“Hmph, I guess they’re terrified of our might and want to wear us down just as they’re doing to themselves," Ye Liuyun hissed.

"So, should we still save the remaining thousands of them?" Ye Tiandao inquired.

"We must if they sought our assistance. Otherwise, we’d violate the contract," Ye Liuyun stressed. "But since they’re playing games, we don’t need to go all out either. We’ll wait it out."

"Isn’t that the same as setting us up?" Yuan Hao asked with a furrowed brow.

Ye Liuyun shrugged it off. "What’s there to fear? They’ll compensate us fivefold for the resources we expend in the mission anyway."

"Besides, isn’t this a perfect opportunity to train our troops? It’s hard to find opponents of a similar caliber."

"I bet these petty tactics aren’t Zheng Huan’s idea. He and his men are honest and straightforward. It must be the elders’ doing!"
