Chapter 2308: Chapter 2308 A Horrendous War

Lei Ming was no expert in battle formations or strategies, but she had never witnessed such a prolonged standoff without any action.

After much ado, the local martial practitioners finally arranged themselves into formation and settled into silence.

"The time for vengeance is upon us! Slaughter!"

One of the martial practitioners bellowed, and with that, they launched their assault.

"Kill!"

They roared in unison, with the first wave from each of their squads charged toward the city walls.

However, the Sanctuary Knights, stationed within the city, did not engage. They activated their defensive Formations, allowing the attackers to strike without resistance.

"The Sanctuary Knights is trying to drain their morale and genuine energy!" Yuan Hao explained to the group.

Meanwhile, Ye Liuyun released Qiong Qi, who was refining weapons, to observe the defensive Formations the enemy set up.

"The formation is quite well set up!" Qiong Qi exclaimed upon studying it. "They must have a skilled Formation master. When you capture him later, send him to me for interrogation!"

Qiong Qi wanted to capture the Formation master to learn from him, even though he was reluctant to admit that he was inferior.

Upon hearing this, Ye Liuyun immediately contacted Hyan Mutong through the Slaving Seal to inquire about the Formation master.

"He’s just an ordinary Formation master, not a renowned figure," Hyan Mutong replied dismissively as he provided Ye Liuyun with the Formation master’s appearance.

"It seems the Sanctuary Knight’s knowledge in formations, alchemy, and Weapon-refining are far superior to ours," Ye Liuyun thought to himself. "Even someone as arrogant as Qiong Qi is interested in their formations. It shows how advanced their skill is."

Ye Liuyun began to worry. If the Sanctuary Planets treated other worlds with the same attitude, how were they supposed to cope?

It was crucial to understand that the two Grand halls capable of receiving treasures were likely supplied by the Sanctuary Planets. If these sources were cut off, they would lose access to many high-end resources.

However, he quickly dismissed the concern, deciding to take things one step at a time. The immediate priority was to improve their strength.

He thought that his troops were already formidable, but the Sanctuary Knights proved to be more sophisticated. Their current adversaries were merely a weaker contingent.

The local martial practitioners took turns assaulting the defensive formations. One team would attack for a while, then another would take over, allowing the previous team time to recover their genuine energy.

"At this rate, they will likely spend half a day doing it! By that point, they would have depleted more than half of their genuine energy!" Qiong Qi made a quick calculation based on his observation.

He then turned to Ye Liuyun and asked, "Why aren’t you making a move?"

Ye Liuyun could only reply bitterly, "Well, the locals don’t trust us since they’re confident they can breach the city on their own. Our agreement with them stipulates that we can only act upon their order. Without their signal, we can’t intervene."

"These fools are marching to their deaths! Forget about them. Just focus on capturing their Formation master for me!" Qiong Qi said dismissively before returning to the Spatial World to continue refining the weapons.

Ye Liuyun reminded his soldiers that they still had half a day to wait before being summoned to fight. He told them to remain in the formation and be at ease for now.

Not long later, the morale of the local martial practitioners was gradually wearing down as they continued their assault on the defensive Formations.

Half a day later, the defensive Formations were finally shattered, and the Sanctuary Knights began to take their positions on by the city walls, marking the true start of the bloody battle.

As Ye Liuyun had predicted, the local martial practitioners suffered heavy losses during the siege. The five teams they had divided into had each taken their turn to attack. Yet, they failed to breach the city.

On the surface, it seemed like the local martial practitioners fought valiantly, but in reality, the defenders were methodically rotating their defenses, resulting in minimal casualties.

Ye Liuyun and his men patiently waited for nearly two hours before the local martial practitioners finally scaled the city walls and entered he city.

The local martial practitioners erupted in cheers as if they had already secured victory. They all surged into the city together, completely breaking the five-teams formation.

Unfortunately, the Sanctuary Knight’s city guards were caught off guard by this mayhem.

Ye Liuyun knew that the disorder within the Sanctuary Knight was only temporary. He immediately issued orders to his men. "The Blade Legion and the Dark Legion, prepare to charge into the city. Use equipment to break through defenses and conserve your strength! The Beastmen will surround the city after they’ve entered."

Ye Liuyun’s troops were ready to strike, waiting for the signal from the Sound Transmission Talisman in his hand.

The clamour of battle echoed from within the city. Ye Liuyun and his companions extended their Divine Sense to assess the internal situation.

Indeed, the local martial practitioners struggled intensely. As soon as close combat ensued, blood and flesh flew everywhere, with casualties rapidly mounting.

Under the Sanctuary Knights’ strong battle Formation, the local martial practitioners had to sacrifice three to five lives just to take down one Sanctuary Knight.

The local martial practitioners had lost their direction and were no longer under command. Driven by sheer hatred, they charged recklessly at the Sanctuary Knights.

"They have fierce spirits!" It’s a tragedy that their deaths are in vain!" Watching this, Zhao Hu felt nothing but regret.

The others echoed his sentiments, but Ye Liuyun, along with Ye Tiandao and Yuan Hao, kept their eyes on the movements of the Sanctuary Knight. Their central forces were as solid as a rock. The local martial practitioners hadn’t even breached their outer defenses.

"Their defense is impeccable. We’ll have to force a penetration!" Yuan Hao sighed.

"Indeed," Ye Liuyun paused briefly before he continued, "No matter how strong their defence is, it’s still flesh and blood. We can use Puppet Beasts and chariots to break their formations."

"So when do we make our move?" Ye Tiandao asked Ye Liuyun.

Ye Liuyun gave the Sound Transmission Talisman in his hand a shake.

"They haven’t given their order yet. We’ll wait."

"They’ve already lost over ten thousand men!" Ye Tiandao said, her voice tinged with compassion, hinting that she wished for Ye Liuyun to act sooner.

Ye Liuyun understood her concern and explained, "We can’t intervene prematurely. They won’t be grateful even if we won. Instead, they’ll accuse us of breaking the agreement."

"We can only let them fight it out. They won’t acknowledge their mistake until they suffer a significant loss."

Ye Tiandao fell silent hearing Ye Liuyun’s rationale. Her eyes were fixed on the movements of the Sanctuary Knights.

Meanwhile, Ye Liuyun was scanning the battlefield, trying to locate the Formation master. He was a foe he had to deal with personally. Even if he had to use either his Scarlet Phantom Eyes or even Divine Soul attack. If the Formation master activated his offensive or defensive Formation beforehand, it would be almost impossible to stop him.

Inside the city, the battle raged on. Local martial practitioners were being relentlessly slashed down by the defenders, falling one after another.

The defenders, too, slowly retreated under the relentless assault, leaving behind a trail of corpses.

The ground where they fought was now soaked in blood, a grory testament to the ferocity of the war.
