Chapter 182: The Last Step
The central meridian gave on the ninth day, and from there the work stopped arguing with him and started to answer.
The second and third of the system’s tasks fell across the two weeks that followed, each a wall he put his shoulder to until it forgot it was a wall, and on a grey morning near the end of the first month his body crossed the line it had been leaning against since spring.
Stage Eight did not arrive as a thunder. He stood in the sealed room with Marrow Dragon loose in his hand, drew the blade through a slow level cut, and for the first time in this life the edge of his intent kept traveling after the steel had stopped, a thin crescent of pressure that crossed the room and scored a pale line into the far wall. He studied the mark for a while.
’Huh,’ he thought.
[ "Huh." ] Mira echoed it back, bone dry. [ Two whole months of you complaining at me, and "huh" is the best you can do. Well. Your central meridian’s finally open, Xuan, and your Qi actually leaves the blade now, so you’ve got real reach. Just try not to spend all of it putting holes in your own wall, alright? ]
The mission paid out the way she had promised. Ten thousand Origin Points dropped into a total that had been sitting shamefully close to zero, and a stabilization pack folded the usual week of grinding a new stage steady into a single night’s sleep.
The second month he spent climbing. Stage Eight into the long middle of the realm, and up toward the peak, the dantian widening under his ribs like a lake filling in slow rain. Mira ran him through mission upon mission, and he did every one, and the points he had bled dry over the Blood Fang mess came back and kept coming, past a thousand, past ten thousand, until the number in the corner of his eye stopped being a worry and turned into a cushion.
He barely glanced at the shop. He was not buying his way up the mountain this time. He was earning it a circulation at a time, and there was a sour little satisfaction in watching the total swell precisely because he refused to touch it.
His body changed under the work. The Sword Absolute Physique had crept out of the low thirties and into the high forties, and the notes the system kept on him read like a list of small miracles he had stopped bothering to be amazed by.
Bone denser than any man had a right to. Muscle laid on without the bulk to show for it. Eyes that tracked a moth crossing a dark room. A body that trained six hours and asked for a seventh.
He needed less sleep than he ever had. He had stopped feeling the cold entirely. Marrow Dragon, in his grip, had begun to feel less like a sword he carried and more like a finger he had grown.
The world past his door went on without him. Through the ward he caught it in pieces, Qingyue’s cold Qi easing into its spot near his each dawn and lifting away each dusk, Lian’s lighter step, the low murmur of two hundred Frostmoon disciples slowly turning into something that answered to Skyedge.
Twice Qingyue left food outside his door with a note in her precise hand ordering him to eat it before it went cold. He ate it. He did not open the door. The two of them had an understanding, and half of it was that she would never knock unless the mountain itself was ending, and the other half was that he trusted her, completely, to know the difference.
Near the end of the second month, on a night when the dantian beneath his ribs had gone quiet and full in a way it never had before, he opened his status and looked hard at what the work had bought him.

’One hundred percent,’ he thought, and could not quite keep the thing out of his chest that was very close to pride.
[ Full, ] Mira agreed. [ A whole Stage Nine dantian, filled right up to the ceiling of the realm. And you know exactly what that means, don’t you. ]
’It means I am finished with Qi Refining.’
[ It means you’re standing on the very last step of it, with your hand flat on the door to Foundation Establishment. Your dantian’s full, your body’s ready, and every stage below this one is done and behind you. The only thing left between you and the next realm now is the breakthrough itself, and whether you’ve got the nerve to go for it. ]
He flicked to the physique panel out of habit, and there it was, the number that had been taunting him for a solid week.

’One percent.’
[ One. ] For once Mira sounded as sour about it as he felt. [ Believe me, I’ve poked at it from every angle. You can’t rush this one with points or pills, it comes when your body decides it’s earned it and not a breath before. And fifty percent opens Communion with Any Sword, which you would love, so naturally the universe is going to make you sit here and wait for it. ]
’What does it actually do?’
[ Once you hit it, you won’t need Marrow Dragon anymore, or any named blade, to fight at full weight. Put any old piece of steel in your hand, a farmer’s tool, a dead man’s sword, a rusty iron bar, and it’ll answer you like you forged it yourself. It’s the whole difference between a swordsman with a sword and, well, just a swordsman. Now stop staring at the number. Staring’s never once budged it. ]
He closed the panels, squared himself on the disc, and turned his attention to the door he had spent two months walking toward.
Foundation Establishment.
A change in category, Mira had called it once, not more of what he already was but a change in the substance of him.
His dantian was full. His meridians stood open. His body had never in either of his lives been readier. If he began the push tonight, he would either cross into the next realm before dawn or come apart somewhere in the trying, and everything he could feel in himself swore he would cross.
He drew one long, slow breath, and reached for it.
The knock came.
Three hard strikes on wood no one had touched in two months, and Wei Tianming’s voice behind it, tight and low and carrying the strain of a man who knew exactly what he was breaking into and had decided he had no choice at all.
"Young master. Forgive me. You have to come out." A breath. "Now. The Third Princess of Tianheng is standing in our main hall, with a hundred guards and an imperial seal, and she is asking for you by name."
Xuan opened his eyes. The full dantian hung under his ribs like a drawn bow he was suddenly not permitted to loose.
’A princess,’ he thought. ’Asking for me by name. That is never the front half of good news.’
[ Oh, I absolutely saw it coming. ] She sounded insufferably pleased with herself. [ Days ago. I just wasn’t going to drop something like that in your lap while you were finally, finally cultivating like a serious person, so I held onto it. Surprise! ] The cheer dropped a notch, and something firmer came up under it. [ But now that you’re listening: a princess doesn’t climb all the way out here for a Qi Refining disciple unless someone, somewhere, has started drawing lines with your name on the wrong side of one. So go careful down there. ]
He rose, and went to open a door after two months.
