Chapter 181: The Boring Way

- Lin Xuan POV -

The Frostmoon disciples had stopped being a crisis and turned into a routine, which was Xuan’s signal to vanish.

It had taken the better part of two weeks. Two hundred strangers in pale blue, housed and fed and folded into the running of a peak that had stood half-empty a season ago, every one of them arriving with a question about who slept where and answered to whom.

Shen Yubai had gone quiet since the duel, and obedient, which suited Xuan fine. Wei Tianming ran the daily churn of the place now without being told twice. Qingyue handled anything wearing a Frostmoon face. The mountain, against all odds, worked.

Which meant Xuan had finally run out of excuses.

He found Qingyue in the courtyard with a practice blade, wearing the private focus she put on when she thought no one was measuring her.

"I am shutting the door," he said. "Properly. Closed-door seclusion, for as long as it takes. No mornings out here, no disciples, no me at dinner. If the mountain catches fire, put it out without asking my opinion."

She lowered the sword. "How long is as long as it takes?"

"Until I am Stage Eight, and a good while past it." He kept his voice level. "I have been winning fights I had no business winning, on borrowed tricks and better timing. That will run dry eventually. I would rather it ran dry in a training room than somewhere that costs me my head."

Something in her face eased, close to approval. "Good. You have leaned on cleverness long enough." She turned back to her stance, and added, lighter, without looking at him, "I will keep your mountain standing. Go and earn the right to stand on it. I will be here when you surface."

He almost said something worth keeping. He decided to save it for when he had become a man worth listening to, and went to shut the door.

The room he used for this lay at the back of Silent Peak, stone-walled and bare, a single formation disc set into the floor that Lian kept charged without being asked. He crossed the threshold, drew the door to, and felt the ward climb up around him and press the whole outside world down into a held breath.

Just him and the voice in his skull now. The way it had been at the very start.

’Alright,’ he thought, folding down onto the disc. ’We do this the boring way. Show me where we stand, and hand me my check-in.’

[ Look at you. Choosing the boring way of your own free will. ] Mira sounded insufferably fond. [ I have waited a long time to meet this version of you. ]

’Do not get used to him. Check-in.’

[ Claiming. And since you asked so nicely, spin. ]

[ ROULETTE REWARD (Daily Check-In) ]

═══════════════════════════════

[ Item Obtained: ]

[ ▸ Meridian-Wash Pill × 3 ]

[ Grade: Earth. ]

[ Effect: eases a blocked channel open during circulation. ]

Xuan looked at the three pale pills gathering out of the light in his palm, and at the empty air where Mira lived.

’The central meridian is the exact wall I have been stuck against for a month.’

[ Is it. ] Mira, breezy. [ What a fortunate coincidence. ]

’You rigged the wheel.’

[ The wheel is random, Xuan. I would never meddle with a fair and sacred game of chance. ( ̄ω ̄) ] A pause. [ It simply lands on what you need with a frequency I find statistically beautiful. Swallow your pills and stop interrogating your gifts. ]

He swallowed one, let the cool spread down through his chest, and pulled up the mission he had been living inside for two weeks.

═══════════════════════════════

[ MAIN MISSION - "Back to Cultivation" ]

[ ▸ Reach Qi Refining Stage 8 through cultivation. ]

[ ▸ No breakthrough pills. ]

[ ▸ Complete 3 system-approved training tasks. (0/3) ]

[ ▸ Stabilize after advancement. ]

═══════════════════════════════

’Three tasks. Then the wall, and Stage Eight on the far side of it.’ He breathed out slowly. ’And once that is done?’

[ You do it all again, and again, until you stand in Foundation Establishment, ] Mira said, and for once there was nothing teasing left in her voice. [ Before whatever is coming manages to arrive. You felt it behind that silk screen as clearly as I did. Something in this world has just decided you are worth noticing. I would like you a great deal harder to kill by the time it turns around and looks closely. ]

So he worked.

The days lost their edges the way they always did behind a sealed door. He circulated until the wash-pills turned the central channel from a stone wall into wet clay, and he pushed at the clay until his robes hung soaked through him and Mira made him stop and eat. Each dawn brought a fresh check-in, and each check-in brought another quiet nudge dressed up as luck: recovery pills finer than anything Master Fu’s pavilion could sell, a Qi-purity draught, once a drill scroll pitched at the precise channel he was fighting. He gave up accusing her of rigging it. They both knew. It had stopped being a joke and turned into a kindness he chose not to name aloud.

The first of the three tasks broke open on the fifth day, in a rush of heat up his spine and a line of text he had been chasing for a month.

═══════════════════════════════

[ Training Task 1 of 3 - COMPLETE ]

[ Central meridian: 60% opened. ]

[ Two tasks remain. ]

═══════════════════════════════

’Sixty percent,’ he thought. ’Of one meridian.’

[ Of the one meridian that has been humiliating you since spring, yes. ] Mira, warm. [ Celebrate the small wins, Xuan. They are the only ones that ever pile up into the large ones. ]

He allowed himself exactly one breath of satisfaction.

He thought, instead of holding it, about a soft young voice behind a white silk screen that had smiled while Blood Fang bled, about a war the whole province could feel coming and no one could date, and about how little sixty percent of one meridian weighed against a Nascent Soul patriarch and whatever the thing behind that screen truly was.

The breath of satisfaction ran out.

He closed his eyes, sank back down into the burning channel, and got back to the work. Out past his sealed door, past the mountain, past a thousand li of quiet farmland and grey road, a clock he had no way of seeing had already begun, very patiently, to run.
