Chapter 1834: Chapter 1833: Believer of an Alien God?
Beidu
"What’s going on?" He Ao walked into the office, looking at Liu Zhengyun inside.
At this moment, a young man with short hair was by Liu Zhengyun’s side, introducing something to him.
"He Ao, you’re here?" Liu Zhengyun looked at He Ao, raised his hand, and pointed to the young man beside him, "Wen Jie, the investigator from Beidu, he has quite a talent in investigating supernatural cases."
"Dean He." The young man with short hair greeted excitedly upon seeing He Ao coming over.
"Hello," He Ao raised his hand and shook his hand, "So the clue Liu mentioned finding, is it what you found?"
"Yes," Wen Jie nodded, looking at He Ao, handed over a piece of information quickly, "We investigated most of the areas around Beidu, sampled those with neck pain, and found that most of them had visited this place."
He opened the file, revealing a photo inside.
"South Courtyard Road?" He Ao looked at the archway in the photo, speaking slowly, "Sounds a bit familiar, a tourist spot in Beidu?"
"Yes, South Courtyard Road is a famous commercial pedestrian street in Beidu," Wen Jie quickly introduced, "This area is the core district of Beidu, also the busiest part, it’s densely populated with people working nearby and a lot of tourists visiting."
"Then let’s go take a look." He Ao nodded, put away the files, turned and looked at Liu Zhengyun, "Liu, are you coming?"
"I won’t go this time," Liu Zhengyun shook his head, "I need to rest for a bit, been up for days."
"Alright," He Ao nodded, he looked at Wen Jie, "Shall we head over?"
"Sure!" Wen Jie nodded, "Dean He, you might not be familiar with the area, this is the suburbs, South Courtyard Road is a bit far, should I drive you there? My car’s parked downstairs."
"No need," He Ao shook his head, leading Wen Jie to the office door, pushing it open, and walked forward, "Let’s take my car."
"Did Minister He drive here too?" Wen Jie hurriedly kept up with He Ao’s pace, crossing the office door, then felt the ambient light suddenly darken.
He looked up, glancing around, only saw some twisted, dilapidated metal train cars, and dark windows.
"The car’s quite old, had a small accident before," He Ao leaned against the car door, speaking slowly, "Just bear with it for a while."
Wen Jie was left staring dumbly, gazing around at the old carriages and fixed seats on the train, his voice slightly trembling as he spoke, "Is this the Velora? The enchanted train that can travel almost anywhere in the world instantly, even apparently soar across the starry sky?"
"Not quite as instant as that," He Ao shook his head. He pulled open the car door, sunlight pouring in from outside, "We’ve arrived."
As he spoke, he stepped to the side and walked out of the car door.
"Dean He, wait for me!" Wen Jie hurriedly followed.
It was a sunny day, brilliant sunlight beamed down from the sky, landing on Wen Jie’s cheeks and his eyes, the large contrast in illumination momentarily left his vision unclear until he adapted.
He raised his head, looking around, at the bustling crowd coming and going on the wide and bustling street.
The bright sunlight illuminated massive television screens, flickering advertisement signs, and uniquely decorated stalls standing in the middle of the street.
"Is this it?" He turned back, looking behind him.
Behind him was just an empty street, without any sight of the old train.
"The deviation shouldn’t be far," He Ao glanced around, turned back to Wen Jie, "Is this the place?"
"Yes, it is," Wen Jie quickly nodded, he spoke swiftly, "Those with neck pain mostly came around this area."
He quickly adjusted his mindset, lifted his gaze, looking at people around him, "We can start our investigation from here."
He picked up his cellphone, quickly dialing a number, "Dean He, I’m making a call, my team is nearby, they can come over right away."
Soon, the call connected, he turned sideways, lowered his voice, spoke excitedly into the phone for a few moments, then hung up.
He lifted his head, only to find that He Ao had disappeared from where he stood ahead.
His body froze, his gaze lifted, finally spotting He Ao talking and laughing with a vendor in front of a snack stand.
He hurried over.
"How many of you are there?"
He Ao’s voice rang out just as Wen Jie approached, before his body could settle.
"Including me, there are eight." Wen Jie answered instinctively.
"Give me nine bottles of water, six chilled and three not chilled." He Ao looked at the boss, speaking quickly.
"Alright." The boss smiled, nodded, supporting his neck with his hand, picking nine bottles of water from the fridge behind the counter, and packing them into two bags.
It was around this moment that Wen Jie finally reacted, looked at He Ao, speaking quickly, "No need, Dean He, no need—"
But before he could finish, He Ao had already pulled out his phone and paid, while the boss handed over the water.
"Boss!" A voice rang out at this moment, a young man rushed over, standing beside Wen Jie, clutching Wen Jie’s shoulder, speaking breathlessly, "Dean He, where is he? You said you’d be waiting under the shade, why are you here? Do you know how hot it is, you’re sending us out to work in this kind of weather, you owe me a bottle of water."
"Want some water?" A gentle voice whispered in his ear, "The bag here is at room temperature, that bag is ice water."
"Ice water? Bought for us?" The young man’s eyes lit up, he raised his eyes, looking at the bags in front.
"Yes." The voice replied naturally with a smile.
"I’ll take an ice bottle then," The young man naturally reached out, taking out one chilled bottle of water, "Wow! Refreshing!"
In the meantime, he lifted his head, looking ahead, saw the relaxed and gentle-faced young man, and laughed, "Bro, are you new here? Quite efficient, are you with Dean He?"
"This is Dean He." Wen Jie softly remarked, with his head lowered.
"You’ve been saying Dean He this and that, where is Dean He? You didn’t mention bringing someone along!" The young man hesitated, and then suddenly realized something, looking up at the young man before him.
Instinctively, he tried to return the water he held, awkwardly looking at He Ao, "Dean He, nice to meet you, you look better in person than in your photo, younger, didn’t recognize you."
As he spoke, he attempted to put the water back into the bag.
At this moment, footsteps started arriving gradually from behind, and a few figures stopped beside Wen Jie.
They first all looked at Wen Jie, then at He Ao in front of Wen Jie, all slightly startled.
"It’s fine, have some water." He Ao lifted the bag in his hand, smiling.
Everyone instinctively looked at Wen Jie.
Wen Jie hesitated for a moment, then nodded slightly.
The young man who intended to return the water instantly withdrew his hand.
"Do you have ice? I want ice! I want ice!" A tall, sweaty young man immediately raised his hand and shouted loudly.
"I’m not feeling well, do you have any at room temperature?" A slim young woman quickly asked.
Very soon, the water in He Ao’s hands was snatched up completely.
Wen Jie also grabbed a bottle of room temperature water, and He Ao kept one for himself.
"Thank you, Dean He!" A few people started chugging water, and the tall young man shouted loudly while drinking.
After this incident, it seemed that their relationships instantly became closer.
"Have any of you found anything?" Wen Jie looked at the group and quickly asked.
"Nothing much," the initial young man shook his head, "we asked around, many have neck pain, but few have had any unusual experiences, and no one has seen anything strange."
"Nowadays, people do all sorts of things, wearing strange clothes and performing abstract actions. We’ve seen it all, even if there’s something unusual, we’d just think it’s an influencer doing a stunt," the tall young man said in a low voice.
Next, the others spoke in turn, none with significant findings, only confirming that many people in the vicinity indeed had neck pain.
Apart from the tourists clearly from out of town, most people here had neck pain, and mostly from last night.
Listening to their descriptions, He Ao took a sip of water.
He couldn’t sense the thoughts of related personnel, and according to Super Memory’s capability, as long as there’s a mysticism link, he should sense something, even if just a little.
Now feeling nothing means that most likely the controlling party is isolating the mysticism link, or that they are the kind to have heard nothing of ’K’ or He Ao’s fame.
He Ao leaned more towards the first scenario, as executing a transcendent event in the Main World would invariably involve some kind of mysticism events and Research Institute materials.
To be able to sever mysticism links likely requires knowing that He Ao is a Higher Being, capable of using mysticism links to carry out some form of ’tracking’, thus having a ’target’, and simultaneously able to leverage higher forces to some extent.
But has the Main World evolved to this version now?
"I went to an old neighborhood nearby," at this moment, the slightly unwell slim woman softly began, "the general information was similar, but their neck pain started a bit earlier, by three to five days."
"A single person or most of them?" Wen Jie immediately asked.
"Not sure if it’s the majority, but it sounds like quite a few." The woman nodded slightly.
"Let’s go take a look," Wen Jie said hurriedly, and as soon as he finished speaking, he seemed to remember he wasn’t the highest-ranked person in the group, and quickly shifted his gaze to He Ao, "Dean He——"
"Let’s go." He Ao nodded and quickly said.
"Alright!" Wen Jie promptly responded.
As He Ao walked at the back of the group, he picked up his phone to contact Ye Yun, asking him to also investigate the situation in Nandu to see if there were any similar core areas.
Soon, they arrived at an old neighborhood.
He Ao raised his gaze and glanced at this old neighborhood.
This place was very old, standing in the depths of Beidu’s most bustling district, with a smattering of pedestrians passing through the neighborhood.
Wen Jie showed his credentials to the security and entered the neighborhood.
"Knock door to door," Wen Jie looked at his team members nearby, "let’s see if there are any clues."
Everyone dispersed instantly, Wen Jie lowered his head and looked at He Ao.
"No worries, you do your thing, I’ll walk around here." He Ao said with a smile.
"Then, if there’s anything, contact me directly." Wen Jie nodded and headed towards one of the buildings.
It was apparent that Wen Jie’s investigation method was to first search the area thoroughly, looking for clues, simple and effective, albeit a bit exhausting.
He Ao walked quietly through the neighborhood, his gaze sweeping over the surrounding people passing by.
The residents here were mainly elderly, most appearing to be in their sixties or seventies, long retired.
As He Ao’s gaze fell upon them, these elders turned their heads to look at He Ao.
He Ao was here only as a clone, which couldn’t bear his Soul, hence couldn’t directly read memories around him.
But that didn’t matter; as long as people saw him, saw his face, they would to some degree establish a mysticism link with him.
Through these mysticism links, his main self could then locate these people.
He Ao wove through the neighborhood, moving through the busiest areas, brushing past the elderly.
One mysticism link after another was built or enhanced around him.
Quickly, He Ao reached the deepest part of the neighborhood, passing through the back gate to a commercial street, thick smoke wafting throughout the area.
He Ao continued slowly ahead, crossing through the commercial street.
Then he slowly walked back, stopping at the middle of the commercial street.
It was an old supermarket, doors open but lights off inside, with only the frozen beverage refrigerator visible at the entrance.
He Ao walked over slowly, passing through the supermarket doors.
Accompanied by a mechanical, slightly noisy ’Welcome’, he entered the small supermarket.
Sitting behind the counter was a stout middle-aged man with a tablet in front of him, seemingly engrossed in watching a series.
Upon hearing the bell, he glanced up at He Ao, then returned his focus back to his series.
He Ao walked straight to the counter, looking at the middle-aged man.
At this point, the man finally lifted his head to look at He Ao, shifting aside to reveal a cabinet filled with cigarettes behind him, "What kind of cigarettes do you want?"
"I only have a question." He Ao stopped in front of him, feeling the man’s presence.
The man clearly sensed his presence too, yet no mysticism links were established between them.
"What question? I’m not accepting interviews here or filming influencer videos," the man waved his hand in annoyance and looked back down at his tablet, "If you’re not buying anything, you can leave."
"Which Divine Being do you worship?" He Ao calmly stood there, watched the middle-aged man, and asked with a smile, "Why are you doing these things?"
The middle-aged man suddenly raised his head, stopping as he looked at He Ao, his gaze frozen.
