Chapter 13: Dyteria: The Corruption

Everything felt blurry and dim, the lights were shut off and the system was down for minutes, the general raised his head and stared at the dilapidated gates that once protected the bunker from the outside world in horror.

"Alex! What just happened?" He asked Alex who also had a shocked look on his face while punching in several codes into the system, trying to revive Rex who was already down for nearly three minutes.

"We misjudged the situation, the target is a mutant with lightning related abilities, the electricity charge from the XXS-Cannon only transferred even more power to him, he redirected that current back to the defensive system and everything is down at the moment." Alex said frantically, his hands had gone stiff as he stared at the screen.

"So what are we to do now? You mean he’s not dead yet?"

"Most likely so but I doubt he would be able to survive voltages of such a high level. I’ll be honest if Rex didn’t interfere before that surge hit the bunker and sacrificed the defensive systems to stop it we would’ve been the ones to die." Alex said then stood up, pushed the chair aside and picked an electromagnetic gun from the table.

"We need to leave general, the plan to evacuate will have to be pushed forward, putting aside the risk of the mutant still being alive. It will be dusk soon, I doubt we could survive a wave with our wrecked defensive systems."

"Alright, inform the others and move out, this mission is a failure. We’ll have to give up on this city, there’s no other choice." The general replied then turned to leave the control room when the door suddenly swung open.

A youth in his teens with flowing blue hair and eyes radiating tiny sparks and crackles of lightning walked in with slow but steady steps. Draxus walked in with a cold look on his face then dashed before anyone could react, grabbing the general by his throat and asked.

"You’re the one who ordered them to fire?" Draxus asked with a cold glint in his eyes.

{Who else would it be? I clearly told you the controls and orders came from this compartment}

’Shut your mouth for once will you?’ Draxus nearly pulled his hair out of anger.

"Yes I did, what are you going to do about that?" The general asked with a determined look on his face while Alex crawled nearby, trying his best to remain unnoticeable and escape from the room before requesting for backup.

There was no way for him to deal with a high grade mutant with a lethal affinity such as lightning alone so he opted for the best option available, call for backup.

’Fuck that, I never liked his arrogant attitude anyways I could just run away and never show up again who cares?’

"You really ordered them to fire at me?" Draxus asked again, his face was filled with surprise while wondering why they would suddenly open fire on another human.

"Yes? I said that earlier."

"Why?"

{Why are you so naive? You need some character development Draxus, we can’t go on this way}

’What do you mean?’

{You think there’s a need for a reason before he decides to fire? If he says you’re a threat and had to be eliminated that’s his choice of course, that’s what living as a civilian without experiencing blood for years does to you}

"Why not? A corrupted high grade mutant walking over to a shelter proclaiming "peace" I’ll be the dumbest on the planet to let you in." The general said with a wide grin.

"Corrupted?" Draxus asked, he could still recall the system’s display beside his status, the word {corrupted} was also written there in bold letters.

"Where did you come from? A cave or something?"

’Right, everyone here at least has an idea of what’s going on but I don’t.’

{Of course! Did you just realize that?}

’Do you know being silent won’t cost a dime from you? Please, I need my sanity intact.’

"I forgot my memories, woke up dazed and now I’m like this." Draxus replied to the general’s words.

Alex, who was nearly at the entrance, also paused and glanced backwards at Draxus.

’Is that a new trick? He really lost his memories?’

"What do you mean corrupted? What is going on and where is everyone? The cities, what happened to them and is this planet called Earth?" Draxus dropped multiple barrages of questions after the other.

"You’ve been corrupted already, by the next surge you’ll lose all control over your body and what do you mean Earth? This is not Earth, it’s Dyteria. What do you mean Earth? As for those in the city? They’re all dead! Every last one of them fell to the corruption and you’re also part of them. If you really love your race and humanity, if you’re really trying to help us then it would be better if you leave now!"

---

The bunker was divided into different sections, the outer layer comprised of the defensive systems created from electromagnetic weapons, robots and the cannons for intense firepower, the defense was solid enough to support a side base in a location that was presumably safe but no one expected a disaster level existence like Draxus to suddenly pop out of nowhere.

The inner layer served as the residence for the civilians and humans gathered from what was left of the wreckage nearby, they were all that was left of a once resplendent and dazzling city, now buried in ruins and destruction.

The core and final layer served as the last resort for those living in there, if the outer and inner defenses were broken through a short few privileged could escape using the core layer.

"Explain everything to me, what exactly is going on? Dyteria you called it right? What is this corruption and what did it do?"

The general glared back at Draxus, but still answered to his questions "Dyteria used to be peaceful and calm, we lived all through the industrial era and a new era of scientific revolution was approaching. Different experiments and scientific researches were conducted to facilitate the travels of humans into outer space, we had high hopes and expectations for a new future where humans wouldn’t be bound to just this little planet but we would become an interstellar race."

"Oookay so what happened? Go straight to the point, I don’t need your development pattern, I want to know what the corruption is and everything about it." Draxus said he was a little interested in their story but that was all, a little.

"I’m trying to explain it all to you, about two months ago a group of astronauts finally landed on the nearest planet we called orbital-213, that marked the beginning of a new life for the humans and a developmental pattern for the human race."

"But that’s where it all went wrong."
