Chapter 410: Chapter 410: Discovered
Hearing the guard’s words, Yan Feijie glanced in the direction he pointed—toward the city center.
"I see. If it’s coming from the city center, it’s not surprising if something big is happening. But at a distance of four or five kilometers, it shouldn’t have any effect on us."
"Of course, we still need to keep an eye on it. Pay more attention to any activity from that direction and report back to me immediately if anything changes," Yan Feijie said after a moment of thought.
"Yes, understood." The scout nodded and quickly left.
Yan Feijie didn’t think too much of it. He only had the manpower to spare someone to watch because his force was large. If he only had his own squad, he would have completely ignored something so far away, even if he had noticed it.
After all, a distance of four or five kilometers was truly vast in a place like Dong’an City, which was teeming with Zombies. An ordinary team probably couldn’t even travel that far in an hour.
However, what he hadn’t expected was that a mere five minutes later, the same scout came down to report again.
"Captain Yan, something’s really not right. The commotion over there is getting louder, and it’s heading in our direction," the scout said with a grave expression.
"What kind of commotion is it?" Hearing the report again, Yan Feijie’s expression turned serious.
He wasn’t lacking in vigilance. Although they had a lot of people, they weren’t invincible. Otherwise, there would have been no need to send out scouting parties to patrol the surroundings.
He wasn’t afraid of other things; what he feared most was that Lin Xinghai might be pulling some kind of stunt.
"I’m still not sure, but I can faintly hear the roars of Zombies," the scout reported.
"Zombie roars?" Yan Feijie’s brow furrowed. A sense of unease finally settled in his heart. "Go and inform Yuan Zheng and Hong Xiuyuan. Have them come over to discuss this."
The scout quickly left, but just after he used his Superpower to fly into the sky, he descended again.
Before Yan Feijie could ask, he spoke first. "I see them coming."
Yan Feijie was slightly surprised, but he quickly understood. This scout surely wasn’t the only one who had noticed the anomaly.
The other scouts must have noticed something was off as well; it was just a matter of who reported it first.
Soon, the three of them gathered.
"I have a bad feeling about this," Yuan Zheng said first after the three exchanged information.
"It’s possible Lin Xinghai is behind this. If it were me, I would have retaliated long ago. He’s even stronger than I am; there’s no way he’d just sit back and wait for death. He’s definitely planning something," Hong Xiuyuan added.
Yan Feijie wanted to retort, ’This seems to have more to do with personality, doesn’t it?’
Of course, he didn’t object, because he also felt that Lin Xinghai wouldn’t just let it go.
"Since you all think so, let’s try to seize the initiative. We’ll send a group of scouts to investigate. They have Flying Superpowers, so they can bring back intel quickly," Yan Feijie said.
"Yes, I agree." Yuan Zheng nodded immediately, then added, "But how can we guarantee their safety? If Lin Xinghai is lying in wait nearby, he definitely won’t pass up this opportunity. Our men might not even make it back."
"That’s easy to solve. We have a few Wind Superpower Users who can carry others. Have them take some Defensive Superpower Users with them."
"If they’re attacked, they can immediately activate their Defensive Superpowers and create some distance. The Tearing Rifle’s effective range is 200 meters. As long as they get beyond that, the danger will be minimal," Yan Feijie said immediately.
The details were quickly ironed out as the three discussed the plan.
Before long, a ten-man scouting party took to the sky. Among them, only five were Flying Superpower Users; the remaining five were Defensive Superpower Users.
With five Defensive Superpower Users working together, they could withstand at least the first volley of gunfire, even if they were attacked by Lin Xinghai.
Watching the scouting party ascend, the three leaders didn’t remain idle. Orders were quickly issued one after another.
The members who had been searching separately began to gather, and the three large teams started to move closer to one another.
Even though they didn’t know what was happening over there, it didn’t stop them from making preliminary arrangements.
It would be best if it turned out to be nothing—it would just mean their men had made an extra trip. But if something really was happening, these advance preparations could prove to be crucial.
Of course, these arrangements caused some dissatisfaction among the members, but the authority of Yan Feijie and the other two leaders still held. Even those who were unhappy only dared to mutter under their breath.
However, such people were in the minority. The vast majority still felt it was better to be safe than sorry.
Besides, some people were already sensing that something was wrong.
When the first scout discovered the commotion, the horde of Zombies led by Lin Xinghai was still five kilometers away. But by the time of his second report, the distance had already closed to four kilometers.
Yan Feijie and the others had also spent some time discussing and arranging the scouting party. By now, Lin Xinghai was only three kilometers away.
That distance wasn’t very far anymore. At the very least, some members with exceptionally good hearing could already faintly make out the roars of Zombies.
Moreover, these roars seemed to grow more distinct with each passing moment, allowing more and more people to hear them.
Gradually, the atmosphere on the ground began to change. Even some members who had previously seemed unconcerned grew tense.
They all began to murmur amongst themselves, discussing what on earth was happening.
...
Meanwhile, the dispatched scouting party had already flown a distance of two kilometers.
However, the expressions on their faces grew uglier and uglier. If, at the beginning, they had only faintly heard one or two Zombie roars, now, as they drew closer, the roars became denser and louder.
Eventually, the sounds merged into one continuous roar.
"I’m getting the feeling this is... a horde," one of the team members said, unable to stop himself from swallowing nervously.
Instantly, the faces of the others changed drastically.
"No way! Are you sure you heard that right?" one of the examinees couldn’t help but ask.
Although those who came to register for the East Sea Academy assessment could all be considered geniuses, their actual combat experience was not particularly rich for that very reason.
Even when they went into the city to kill Zombies and hone their skills, they were always heavily protected.
Of the ten people here, only the examinee who had just spoken had ever witnessed something as dangerous as a zombie horde.
"How could I have misheard? So many Zombies roaring together—I can’t think of anything else it could be besides a horde," the questioned examinee retorted, annoyed.
"Alright, we’re almost there. No need to argue. We’ll have our answer soon enough," the examinee in charge of the team said.
Even though they knew they were only a few hundred meters away from the Zombies, the towering buildings made it difficult to see the situation clearly.
Just then, the team flew through the gap between two skyscrapers and emerged over another street.
Looking down the length of the street, their view was completely unobstructed.
They all subconsciously glanced down the street into the distance. That single glance left them utterly stunned.
