Chapter 721: Chapter 721 - Visiting the in-laws: Fortress City of Borg (Part 3)
For some reason, I had a bad feeling about the condition of having a companion during my task completion. My fears were indeed confirmed when Crisandra smiled after speaking then looked at the man next to her with a knowing smile. The man looked back at Crisandra with his eyebrows furrowed at first then his eyes widened in realization as to what she was about to make him do.
I smiled as if I did not see their silent interaction and accepted her condition. I’d rather have an annoying companion monitoring me than having to go back all the time after completing only one task then having to repeat the whole damn thing ten times.
After accepting the condition and also getting my Missions Hall identification token from Crisandra which will record the tasks I have on-going and those that I have finished, I turned around not bothering about the man that was tasked to accompany me. I immediately went to the board instead where the tasks were pinned on to start choosing the things that I wanted to do.
I silently skimmed through the contents of all the uncategorized tasks on the board. I did not even notice that the man was observing me. Since I prioritized efficiency, I did not even bother to hide the fact that I can read quite quickly as my eyes moved through the whole board in just a few minutes. The board was covering one of the side walls of the hall which was roughly 2 meters high and 6 meters long so you can imagine just how many tasks were pinned on it.
After a few minutes, I used telekinesis to pick out the tasks that I chose from the wall, not minding that people would know I was a mage. It was not impossible for humans to be mages anyway though they were quite rare.
All in all, I got 5 tasks from the first mission type wherein 3 were to harvest some type of plant while 2 of them were to hunt some medium-sized animals for meat and other useful parts. The other 3 were to help locals on their businesses. I chose business-type establishments because I might get the chance to receive discounts on my next purchases if I do well.
Once I have made my choice, I went back to Crisandra to confirm the 8 tasks which she then recorded in my identification token. The woman, realizing that I have not even looked or even spoken to the companion she assigned to me kindly said, "Oh, I forgot to introduce you. This is my son, Ezrath. He can take care of himself so you do not have to worry about him. He is always sent to assist first time mission takers to ensure that they come back alive and they won’t be robbed too."
For the first time, I looked sideways to where Ezrath was standing. Just like what his mother did to me earlier, I looked at his face then down toward his feet then looked away with a smirk on my face. I didn’t tell him the expected polite phrase "Nice to meet you" that would’ve been expected of the situation. I looked back at Crisandra and simply replied, "I’m Selene. Do you have a map of this city and the area surrounding it?"
As if encountering something incredibly funny, Crisandra laughed loud then teased her own son as she said, "I never thought this day would come. There was actually someone that would look at you like you were just a piece of pebble or dried up bark on the side of the road." She then addressed me by saying, "I really like you, Selene! You can take two more tasks from the board since you made me happy today!"
I smiled back at Crisandra and thanked her. I turned around back to the board and simply took 1 more harvest tasks for an animal hunt and 1 more tasks to help another business. I went back to the desk, got it recorded then I simply just walked out of the missions hall not even bothering to call on Ezrath, my babysitter for the day.
I decided to do the harvest missions first while there is still some light outside. As for the animals that I needed to hunt, all of them were nocturnal though I don’t think Ezrath has realized it. He was looking away all this time or bantering with his mother to even notice. As for the tasks for the businesses, I can finish them by tomorrow during store hours.
I walked leisurely on the streets of the Fortress City of Borg while studying the map in my hands. I have mostly mapped this area during my shopping spree earlier but it is not so bad to combine this detailed map to the one that I already have.
A few minutes into my walk, I heard hurried footsteps behind me. I looked back for a few seconds and saw Ezrath with a huge backpack that he slung on his shoulders. He totally looked like he was going on a week-long camping trip in some far away mountain.
Why is he carrying such a bulky bag that screams "I am going out of the city so please ambush me and rob me!"
I rolled my eyes at him with a heavy sigh and continued walking as if I did not know him. He did his best to run forward until we were walking side by side. I know that he was looking at me from the side and I know that he knew I was ignoring him so I did not bother to speak at all.
It took 15 minutes for us to reach the southern gates of the Fortress City of Borg which was the exit nearest to the periphery of the forest and mountainous areas of this region. As we stepped out, Ezrath couldn’t take the silence no more so he tried to start a conversation with me.
I kind of expected what questions he would be asking first and could not help but snicker as I heard him say, "Did I slight you in any way? Why does it seem like you hate me when this is the first time we met?"
