Chapter 720: Chapter 720 - Visiting the in-laws: Fortress City of Borg (Part 2)
As I went out of the inn, I started browsing along the busiest parts of the city market. I was buying stuff here and there, not really minding about the price as long as I took a fancy of something. I could not care less that I have already attracted the attention of bandits, pickpockets or shady people while walking around, alone. It is not like they can see me carrying anything and not that they can steal from me even if I am holding on to my shopping bags.
I consider this whole city as something akin to a PVP area inside an MMORPG. It simply means that I can fight or even kill here if I feel that my life is threatened in any way. I will never start a commotion just because I feel like it but I certainly do not mind joining one if they piss me off.
After shopping for several non-food items, I also started eating stuff that looked delicious from street food stalls as part of my snack time. I hid the rest of them in my space to savor them in the near future and to share with my people.
Even if I had eaten snacks, it will still not beat having a full meal. While shopping, I still asked around and my feet brought me to the best restaurant in the city based on the suggestions of the people I have asked. The name of the restaurant is "Tipsy & Stuffed" which is quite appropriate based on their rich offering of food and alcoholic drinks.
After I was stuffed (but not tipsy), it was yet another shopping spree and a food crawl in one. I am a bit braver on this shopping trip since Yren never cared how much money I spent as long as it was not used to buy another man as per his own words with a matching glare when he said it.
I already told Yren where I was staying but I did not get a response if he will be staying in my inn or not. As for my father-in-law, I already sent a request for a personal meeting a week prior but there was no response up to now.
Since I was an adventurer back when I was in Hoffen City, I started looking for any establishment that looked anything like an adventurer hall or a mission hall. I am honestly getting bored of the wait and my hand is itching to do something that would earn me money.
It took me about 10 minutes to finally find a rundown looking building a block away from a glaringly extravagant looking lord’s mansion. I went inside and I immediately caught the eyes of everyone inside. The place was filled with burly men that looked like they have been battle-hardened by wars, fights and hunts.
The people inside the building all had scars on their faces and the skin shown through their clothes and armor. They were looking at me like I am some lost kid that went willingly to a pack of wolves to be eaten.
I walked nonchalantly in the middle of the hall until I reached what seemed to be a reception desk of an inn. There was a younger man and an older woman manning the counter.
The man looked to be around his late 20s and honestly, he looked quite out of place in here just like me since his face looked too smooth and harmless. The woman was a bit older, must be around her early 50s. She looked around 70% similar to the other man so I can only assume that they are mother and son.
Since I promised to avoid men, of course, I approached the counter where the older woman was assisting. I already saw the man looking at me from afar, a mix of curiosity and surprise was quite obvious on his face since we looked like we are of the same age (Well, he is older). He should be curious because I was alone and definitely looked like someone who is not a local.
I saw the moment that his eyes widened when I finally took a sharp turn to approach the woman’s designated counter instead of his. I kept my face emotionless as I asked for information on paid missions that might be available for adventurers in this place. As for the man, he looked like his ego was hit by a boulder.
The woman, who was named Crisandra, kindly explained to me that there were several missions available in the city. The first type was the harvest type where I have to go outside to gather herbs, hunt animals or mine ores and precious stone. The second one were support missions which was to either protect someone, escort carriages with important cargo or completing a kill notice. The last one were the helper tasks where one would help locals with simple tasks that they need to run their businesses or homes.
The first type of missions did not have a definite amount of pay since it depends on your luck and ability. One can’t have a good haul every single day.
The second type had the highest pay but it is the most time-consuming and most dangerous. There are only a few types of people that needed escorts like the nobles, one being pursued by authorities, merchants who did not want to get robbed or those that have too many enemies for whatever reason.
The last type gives the lowest pay but in exchange for that was peace of mind and safety since you do not have to leave the city. If you do well, you also get to have better relationships with the locals.
After hearing all the mission types I can choose from, I couldn’t help but have a smile on my face. My thought was more in the lines of having the chance of earning money and not being bored at the same time. It is not like I can just storm in the headquarters of Wrath demanding to meet their leader, right?
I asked if there was a limit on how many missions I can take at the same time. Crisandra looked at me from head to foot as if gauging how serious and strong I am then she replied, "Well, you look tough for your age so I can give you a little bit of special treatment. You can get up to 8 basic tasks in one go but you have to finish them all within the week. Since you are a first-timer, you would be assigned someone from the hall to be your monitor. That person will accompany you to ensure your safety as well as push you to complete the tasks on time. Would that be alright?"
