Chapter 187: Chapter 187: The Infirmary
The door swung opened and slammed on either side of the wall. The orderly stumbled back in fear.
"What are you doing?!" The male orderly shouted.
More orderlies rushed forward with the intention of pushing them out. Each of them wore gloves and face masks.
Carter took out his doctor certificate from the Enthrall Institute.
"I am Doctor Victor Frankenstein of the Enthrall Institute. These people need medical attention immediately."
"Dr. Frankenstein? Isn’t he that famous surgeon?" An orderly said.
"Prepare three beds for me now!" Carter said.
"Only two. I am fine." Charles said.
"Two beds!" Carter corrected himself.
"Yes, Doctor!" The orderlies nodded in response.
Everyone medical practitioner in Anglas knew about Dr. Frankenstein at this point. Even if they didn’t, the certificate from the Enthrall Institute was more than enough to show authority.
"Give me Florence." Carter took Florence from Charles’s hands.
They walked inside the infirmary. Many patients were lying around looking extremely sick.
"What happened here?" Charles frowned.
An orderly sighed deeply. "It’s not that we don’t want to take more patients. But we already have too much on our hands already. Many infected patients are rushing in with severe cases of Black Blood."
"So you stop taking more patients to prevent the current patients from getting worse?" Carter said.
The orderly nodded, "That’s right. This place is already infested with disease already. The only solution we can do is to not make it worse."
"Where are all the nurses?" Carter said.
"They are all currently busy. Some aren’t here. We don’t have that many physicians around. Most have been transferred to Orkshire or Luandon because of how bad it got over there."
"Alright. I will take care of these patients."
Carter took out a paper and wrote all the ingredients inside. "Take this and go to the Dispensary."
"How much do you need, Doctor?" The orderly said.
"As many as you can. And summon the nurses and doctors to me once you finish."
"Yes, Doctor!"
Carter then pointed to rest of the orderlies, "You. Come and open the windows for me. This place is infested with disease, do you really want them to get worse? We need ventilation."
"Yes, Doctor!"
"You and you and you. Rearrange the patients. Each of them must be separated from each other at least six feet."
"But... we don’t have that many rooms, Doctor."
"Use the hallway, the waiting area. We cannot let the pathogens to crowd up and make it worse, understood?"
"Yes, Doctor."
Within a few commands, the situation in the Infirmary was under control. The patients were still in a bad state but the orderlies felt much better since they knew exactly what to do.
Carter brought Peter and Florence to a separate room.
"Will it be okay for us to stay here? We might catch Black Blood?" Charles said.
"Don’t worry. Florence and me are immune. Only you and Peter are in danger."
"Then..."
Carter put his Brewer’s Chest down and gave Charles a Purifying Elixir.
"Drink half. It should guard you against Black Blood for 24 hours. Give the other half to Peter."
Charles nodded and didn’t question. He chugged the potion down.
Carter put on his surgery gloves and disinfected his tools quickly.
"The environment is not ideal but we need to be quickly or else Peter might be in danger."
Peter’s bloody arm was losing a lot of blood. After Charles helped him drink the potion, Carter prepared a sedative syringe.
"You will go to sleep for a little bit. Don’t worry. I’ll take care of you." Carter said.
"No sedative. I can take it!" Peter said.
"No you won’t."
Carter held Peter down and plunged the syringe into him. Peter was knocked out cold. The doctor in the white coat quickly sewed his wound close.
Peter was losing a lot of blood also and might need a blood transfusion. This little Infirmary in Bewingham did not have the equipment or the blood for that.
Blood Transfusion was still a rather new technique in this world. Carter only introduced it to Anglas around two years ago. It was spreading nicely but only big hospitals had it.
"He might need some blood."
"Take mine." Charles rolled his sleeve up.
Carter shook his head, "It doesn’t work that way. I need to examine his blood and I need to find someone’s blood that is the same type as him."
Carter took a small blood sample from Peter. "Keep a close eye on him. Tell me if anything’s happening."
Charles nodded firmly.
Carter then moved on to Florence. Last time, this girl was unconscious when he arrived in this world. This time, she was still unconscious.
’You really have a shitty role, Florence.’ Carter thought to himself.
He checked Florence’s vitals and her blood.
"What the..." Carter widened his eyes.
"What’s wrong?" Charles said.
"It’s complicated." Carter said.
Florence’s blood was Cursed Blood. The blood of the witch. However, the amount of Corruption within her blood had grown ten times more. This was a dangerous amount and would have driven a mortal to madness.
’This is the same Corruption level of an Elite...’
Carter opened Florence’s eyes and noticed that it was completely black. No amount of white. No pupil. Just pure black.
"What happened this time? How did she turn like this?"
"She met someone. A Necromancer. He said that he could give her freedom." Charles said.
"And then?"
"She refuses of course. But the Necromancer did something. She ran home in a panic and before we knew it, those ugly witches were chasing us."
"What do they really want..." Carter mumbled to himself.
He took out his Destiny Watch. It was counting down from 36 hours. Something big was going to happen a day and a half from now. But Carter didn’t know what.
’I should contact Maiden Doll soon to do another Divination.’
Carter had a lot of ingredients inside his Brewer’s Chest. This chest was basically an endless inventory for herbs and medications. He collected both from Hexilia and the Shingo Kingdom.
With all of his mental skills, he quickly formed a new formula for a potion in his mind.
