Chapter 239: Angel Zombie

Each person acted according to their own inclination, no one willing to listen to another, and a chaotic rain of disorganized abilities couldn’t get past a defense system designed to crush that very chaos.

On the grandstands, faces changed.

"That tower..."

"It broke everything."

"Not just one tower, there’s also some kind of pressure..."

Rover stood inside, watching through the screen, expression unchanged.

"Morie."

"Suppression field is stable." Morie answered immediately, fingertips still moving across the control panel. "But I have to split the energy. The Survivors aren’t the real concern. The problem is what’s in the fog."

She had barely finished when the fog at the courtyard’s edge began to move.

Not wind.

But something parting the fog to step through.

The first one charged out of the fog curtain.

A Zombie Hunter.

Around two meters tall, lean build, both arms replaced with long bone blades. Nothing like the sluggishness of low-level zombies. It launched across the courtyard at a speed that cracked the stone beneath its feet in long lines, aiming straight for room 2705’s main door.

But it didn’t reach the door.

A figure was already blocking its path.

Rilia.

She held no weapon. She only stepped forward one pace, her azure blue eyes flashing, then threw a punch.

BOOM.

The punch and the bone blade collided.

The Zombie Hunter was knocked backward, its body spinning in mid-air, slamming hard onto the courtyard floor and dragging a long groove through the stone.

Rilia lowered her hand, gaze cold.

She paused for just a moment.

That punch had been stronger than she expected. Far stronger than anything she could have done outside. She looked down at her own fist, then understood.

The Garden of Eden.

The closer she stood to room 2705, the more her strength was amplified.

"Interesting." She said softly.

But she didn’t relax.

Because behind the first Hunter, the fog kept parting.

Not just one.

An entire swarm.

Hunters. Tankers. Lickers. One by one, pouring out of the fog curtain like a burst dam. Tankers with skin hard as steel plate lumbering forward. Hunters launching themselves like thrown daggers. Lickers crawling across the courtyard floor, charging toward the main door from every angle.

The entire courtyard was suddenly awash in monsters.

Selina stepped forward.

"My turn."

Her sword left its sheath.

No wasted movement. No challenge called out. She simply launched into the middle of the monster horde like a bolt of light, and each time her sword rose, a monster was cut in two.

But this time, her speed was completely different.

Faster. Sharper. Every slash carrying a force far beyond the ordinary.

A Tanker charged in, intending to use its massive body to crush her. Selina didn’t dodge. She only turned her body sideways, sword sweeping across, and the Tanker’s steel-hard skin was parted like paper.

Outside, she might have needed several slashes to cut through a Tanker.

Here, just one.

Selina laughed.

"Master, your room really is something special."

Inside, Rover’s lips curved slightly.

But even she had to admit, this monster swarm was unlike the ones before. Denser, thicker, with no end point.

For every one that fell, two more filled its place.

Selina kept pushing deeper into the horde, and before long, she was surrounded on all sides.

"Selina!" Sunako cried out from inside.

"Noisy." Selina laughed, spinning, her sword tracing a complete circle around her.

An entire ring of monsters was cut apart simultaneously.

Above, Thunder Dragon slithered up onto the door frame, its long body extending outward.

When a swarm of Lickers crawled across the courtyard floor charging toward the main door, Thunder Dragon opened its mouth.

A bolt of white lightning fired.

CRACK.

A whole section of the courtyard lit up. The Lickers crawling across it were struck, bodies convulsing then dropping, turning to ash before they could crawl another step.

That lightning was stronger than usual too.

The Garden of Eden didn’t only enhance the women. It enhanced everything that belonged to Rover.

Elith stood just inside the threshold, eyes half-closed.

Her silk had been spread across the entire courtyard from some point earlier. The strands were fine enough to be nearly invisible, but when a Hunter launched itself through the air, it suddenly jerked to a halt mid-flight, its entire body wrapped tight by hundreds of threads.

The Hunter struggled.

The silk tightened.

Finally, with a dry sound, the Hunter was sliced into pieces by those very threads.

Elith opened her eyes, her voice light as a breath.

"Once you’re in my web, don’t dream of getting out."

Right at the threshold, Monica threw the cursed doll onto the ground.

A Tanker had just pushed past Selina and was charging straight at the main door. But the moment it touched the door’s boundary, its entire body froze solid. Black veining spread across its steel-hard skin, and in the next instant, it punched itself in the head.

"Countercurse." Monica said quietly. "Anything that touches the door attacks itself."

Rover stood inside, watching everything through the screen.

Selina on the outer line, Rilia holding the ground right before the door, Thunder Dragon guarding the door frame, Elith controlling the whole courtyard, Monica holding the main door’s boundary, Morie operating the towers. Each person was doing exactly their part, and the entire room was running like a fully assembled machine.

They were strong.

Strong enough that the crowd on the grandstands, who had just been shouting for fairness, could now only watch in silence.

Partly because of skill.

Partly because of the room.

The more these women fought close to room 2705, the more they seemed to be borrowing strength from something larger than themselves.

But Rover didn’t let his guard down.

Because he sensed that the truly dangerous thing had not yet appeared.

And right at that moment, the fog at the courtyard’s edge fell silent.

The monster swarm charging forward suddenly halted, as if something larger was pressing them aside to make way.

Rover raised his head.

In the fog curtain, a silhouette slowly stepped out.

Very tall. Over three meters. A frame so gaunt it was revolting, pale skin stretched over bone. But what made the entire courtyard grow cold wasn’t its height.

It was the wings.

On its back were two enormous pairs of wings, formed from bone and rotting flesh, yet still holding the shape of angel wings. Above its head, a distorted halo floated, not a pure divine radiance, but a sickly, trembling ring of light, like a mockery of what it had once been.

A Zombie Angel.

Morie’s expression changed.

"High-level. Very high. The suppression field can’t fully pin it down."

The Zombie Angel spread its wings.

Then it dove.

Unlike the other monsters. Its speed surpassed even the Hunters. In the blink of an eye, it was already directly above room 2705, one bone arm swinging down, aimed straight at the main door.

Not at the wall. Not at the roof. Because even its instinct recognized that only the main door could be broken.

Rilia launched herself upward to intercept.

The Zombie Angel didn’t dodge. It used its other bone arm to swipe horizontally, and even with the Garden of Eden’s enhancement, the impact still sent Rilia skidding back several steps, shoes grinding hard against the stone floor.

Thunder Dragon opened its mouth and unleashed a bolt of lightning.

But the Zombie Angel used its wings to deflect the lightning, the bony feathers scorched but its body not slowing at all. The bone arm continued driving down toward the main door.

BOOM.

The door shook violently.

On Morie’s control panel, a number appeared.

[Main door durability: 92%.]

Just one strike.

Eight percent gone.

Sunako cried out: "The door! It hit the door!"

"I see it." Morie said quickly, hands moving on the panel. "Rilia was pushed back. Selina is surrounded. This one is too fast, the towers can’t lock it in time."

The Zombie Angel spread its wings again, preparing to land the second blow on the door.

Just a moment.

If the main door broke, room 2705’s entire defense would lose its only anchor point. The monster swarm waiting outside would flood in, and the place where Nanoe, Nanami, and Sunako stood would no longer be safe.

The air inside the room pulled taut.

Selina was trying to break free of the encirclement but being blocked by the Tanker horde. Rilia had just been pushed back and hadn’t yet regained her footing. Thunder Dragon had just fired lightning and needed time to recharge. Elith needed time to pull back her silk and weave new traps around the Angel. In this one instant, no one could intercept the second blow in time.

All of it happened in under two seconds.

And in those two seconds, everyone inside the room understood one thing.

They would hold out.

But right now, no one knew how.

On the far side of the courtyard, deep within the fog curtain, a person was standing and watching.

He wore a neat black formal suit, long coat, white gloves, polished leather shoes. On his head was a tall black top hat, and in his hand he held a slender cane with a silver tip. Around his face there was always a thin layer of fog, making it impossible for anyone to clearly see his features.

The Arbiter.

He stood outside the chaos, not intervening, only quietly observing the courtyard drowning in disorder.

When the Zombie Angel spread its wings preparing to land the second blow on the door, the corner of his fog-obscured lips curved very slightly.

"Oh." He said very softly, voice as mild as someone commenting on a chess match. "The door has been touched."

He used his fingertip to lightly spin the cane.

"Let’s see just how far this young one can go."

Fog coiled around his feet.

He tilted his head, his obscured gaze fixed on the solitary room in the middle of the courtyard, on the silhouette of the young man standing calmly inside.

"After all..."

His smile was gentle enough to be chilling.

"He is still the son of that person."

The silver-tipped cane tapped lightly against the stone.

Clink.

And inside room 2705, Rover raised his head, looking straight at the Zombie Angel spreading its wings before the main door.

He didn’t step back.

He stepped forward, moving toward the door.
