Chapter 238: Special Trial: Activated
Rover placed his hand on the sofa armrest and was silent for a few seconds.
Then he said: "I’ll take it."
The entire room immediately went quiet.
Nanoe stood behind him, one hand still resting on his shoulder. She didn’t ask again, didn’t advise him to think it over more. She only tightened her fingers slightly, as if telling him that no matter what he chose, she would stand right here.
Morie was the first to react.
"If you accept, the trial will begin immediately. We won’t have time to reposition the towers."
"I know." Rover said.
"And you’re still accepting?"
"Yeah."
Morie looked at him for a moment, then nodded. She didn’t argue. She only turned and walked toward the defense tower control panel, her fingertips beginning to move quickly across the screen.
Because she understood, once Rover had decided, her job wasn’t to stop him, but to make that decision a little less dangerous.
The System’s light suddenly surged.
Not the familiar yellow.
But a cold white, like fog compressed into a curtain.
[Special Trial: Activated.]
[Room 2705 is being separated from the apartment complex structure.]
[Please remain in position.]
The ground shook.
Not strongly. But very strangely. It wasn’t the feeling of an earthquake, nor the feeling of a room taking a hit. It felt like the entire room was being lifted by a massive invisible hand, separated from the surrounding walls, then gently set down somewhere else.
Sunako hugged her head and whimpered: "Whoa, whoa, whoa, I’m getting room sick..."
Thunder Dragon glanced at her.
Krit.
Sunako immediately shut her mouth and clung to the table leg.
When the swaying sensation disappeared, everything had changed.
Room 2705 had always had only one main door. No windows. That was the only entrance and exit members used. But now, outside that door was no longer the corridor.
It was a courtyard.
Very wide.
The courtyard floor was paved with gray stone, stretching out in all four directions until it disappeared into fog. Surrounding the courtyard were rows of old high-rise buildings, windows dark with not a single light. They stood still in the fog curtain like the grandstands of an arena that had been dead for a very long time.
And right in the center of that courtyard, room 2705 stood alone.
Separated.
No corridor. No adjacent rooms. No other escape route beyond a single door.
Just a solitary structure placed in the middle of the yard, like a chess piece that had been lifted off the board and set down in the middle of a siege.
Morie glanced at the control panel, then said one sentence that settled everyone.
"The basic rules are still intact." She said. "Only the main door has durability and can be attacked. The walls, floor, ceiling, all remaining structures of room 2705 cannot be broken. If they want in, there’s only one way."
Rover nodded.
"The main door."
"Correct." Morie said. "As long as the door holds, the room won’t be breached."
That was good news.
But it also meant all pressure would funnel into a single point.
Rover stepped closer to the door, looking out through the slightly open crack.
His gaze swept across the dark buildings surrounding them, then stopped.
On those grandstands, there were silhouettes.
Many of them.
One by one, they materialized in the fog. Some stood on balconies. Some stood on rooftops. Some stood right in the courtyard, only a few dozen meters from room 2705.
Rover recognized a few faces.
Vance stood on the second floor of one of the buildings, his face still bearing the marks of last time’s humiliation. Damon leaned against a pillar, that lazy smile with those vicious eyes. And there were other Survivors he had seen in the chat panel, or heard the names of, or who were completely unfamiliar.
A crowd.
But this time, they weren’t standing to watch.
[Trial Conditions:]
[All Survivors in the area will attack room 2705.]
[Simultaneously, monsters from the fog will pour in.]
[Room 2705 must hold out until the trial ends.]
Selina read that text, the corner of her lips curving up.
"Finally something to do."
She stood up, one hand on her sword hilt, then looked toward the main door.
"I’m going out first."
Rilia also stood. Her azure blue eyes looked out at the courtyard, sweeping across each silhouette on the grandstands, then stopping at the fog in the distance.
"Not just Survivors." She said. "There’s something else in the fog. A lot of it."
Morie didn’t look up.
"I know. The towers have already picked up the signals. Very large numbers."
Nanoe stood beside Rover, her calm gaze looking outward.
"They want to watch." She said softly. "Then let them watch."
Then she turned to look at the women in the room, and her smile softened.
"Don’t forget where we are."
No one needed reminding.
Because from the moment the trial began, all of them felt it.
The Garden of Eden effect.
Since room 2705 had reached a certain level, this room was no longer merely a shelter. It had become a type of territory. And within that territory, the women who held a covenant with Rover, the ones who belonged to him, were all granted a massive enhancement.
Power surging through their veins.
Faster speed. Greater strength. More stable abilities.
The closer to room 2705, the more pronounced the effect.
Selina felt it most clearly. Right now, she felt the sword in her hand as light as a feather, and her body was so filled with power that she wanted to charge straight into the middle of the monster horde.
Rilia was the same. Her bloodline boiled, muscles tensing, a feeling like all the strength she had ever possessed at her peak had returned, and then some.
Rover looked at all of them, then finally said a very short sentence.
"Go. Hold the door. Don’t let it break."
Selina laughed.
"Master, rest easy."
She pushed the door open and stepped out first.
Rilia followed. Then Elith, silk already beginning to emerge from her fingertips. Thunder Dragon slithered out last, its long body coiling around the door frame. Monica stood just inside the threshold, the cursed doll in her hand.
Rover remained inside, standing beside Morie before the control panel, observing the entire situation.
Not that he didn’t want to act.
But he understood, this time, what needed to be seen wasn’t him.
It was them.
Right at that moment, the trial bell rang out.
BONG.
A deep, muffled toll spread across the courtyard, piercing through the fog, striking every dark wall.
And the instant the bell faded, the crowd on the grandstands acted in unison.
Every kind of ability fired toward room 2705.
Streams of fire. Ice spikes. Distorted streaks of light from abilities Rover couldn’t even name. They came from every direction, dense and chaotic, all aimed at a single point.
The main door.
But before that barrage reached the door, a layer of silver-gray light blazed.
[Titan Soul-Sealing Tower - Suppression Field: Activated.]
Not a shield.
But a pressure.
The entire area around room 2705 suddenly grew heavy. The incoming streams of ability were as if pressed down by an invisible hand, their speed visibly slowing, trajectories bending, power being twisted out of shape.
Then the two towers spoke.
[Marble Launcher - Formation Disruption Mode.]
[Crossbow Shooter - Target Lock Mode.]
Silver-gray marbles fired out, their trajectories bizarre, bouncing off walls, ricocheting off railings, tapping off the ceiling, then precisely striking each incoming ability stream. Every marble impact produced a layer of gray frost, locking solid, snuffing out the attack.
The Crossbow Shooter was quieter. It didn’t fire much. But every black arrow it loosed pierced straight through the strongest incoming ability stream, locking exactly on target, forcing whoever had unleashed it to pull back.
Within a few seconds, the crowd’s first wave of attacks fell apart.
Not because they were weak.
But because they weren’t coordinated.
