Chapter 195: Chapter 140: Who Are You?
Others might not believe it.
But Zheng Xiu was utterly convinced that he had walked the Painter Path.
For one thing, every move he now made—aided by the Deceitful Object of the Prisoner Path and massively amplified by the Surprise Cage—was tinged with flowing, inky shadows that shifted with his emotions.
’Isn’t that the perfect picture of a Painter?’
’Albeit a slightly more violent one.’
Kui Lang plucked his bowstring. Twelve long arrows shot through the air, and by the time the force transferred to the twelfth one, it was flying at a speed no Human could achieve.
The fletching screamed against the air as the arrow plummeted like a meteor, emitting a dazzling light and a piercing sound.
Stream of Light Arrow!
Kui Lang had once said this move, Twelve Linked, was passed down two hundred years ago by a master who had fired this shot using pure Archery.
SHIIING!
In that instant, every hair on Zheng Xiu’s body stood on end. A terrifying sense of impending death washed over him, as if a pair of invisible hands were strangling him, making it impossible to breathe.
A terrible image flashed through his mind: his body, pierced by a beam of fiery light.
Intuition!
In that split second, Zheng Xiu foresaw his own future—being run through by that very arrow!
Zheng Xiu’s muscles tensed. His fangs extended, and black vascular patterns spread from the center of his chest across the left side of his body. A single, agile wing shielded his head as he leaned slightly to the right. He gripped his blade, his strike descending like a dragon’s stomp, the inky shadows crashing down upon Kui Lang like a great, dark mountain.
The beam of fiery light instantly pierced Zheng Xiu’s wing and embedded itself in his powerful deltoid, drawing a spray of blood.
BOOM!
The forest trembled as if a meteorite had struck the Ghost Wail Forest, sending shattered rock and splintered wood flying dozens of meters into the air.
A powerful gale swept through the Ghost Wail Forest. Countless hungry wolves, lurking nearby and waiting to scavenge the remains of the loser, were blown into the sky, howling in confusion and stunning the entire Wolf Pack.
An unknown amount of time passed.
THUD! THUD! THUD!
As the bodies of the wolves thudded to the ground, Zheng Xiu walked through the swirling dust to the edge of a massive, hoof-shaped crater in the center of the Ghost Wail Forest.
At the epicenter of the impact was a giant, five-clawed crater, several meters deep and fifty meters long. Seen from above, it looked as if some terrifying beast had descended to the mortal realm and stomped its foot in the Ghost Wail Forest.
"PLORP~"
Zheng Xiu pulled out the broken arrow—just a half-shaft, really—that was lodged in his muscle, the motion making a wet, sucking sound.
His eyes locked on the arrow. Zheng Xiu’s brow furrowed, and he glanced at Kui Lang—a flattened, lifeless form in the center of the claw-shaped pit. "Impressive," he praised.
The arrow had pierced his single wing in his Mighty Man "beast" form, broken through his Unbreakable defense, and still managed to lodge itself in his muscle. It was a testament to the arrow’s terrifying power.
Zheng Xiu leaped down into the deep pit and walked over to Kui Lang.
RIIIP.
Zheng Xiu tore away Kui Lang’s clothes.
He first carefully confirmed that Kui Lang was dead, then rolled the body over for a closer inspection.
’He isn’t a Mystic.’
’At least, not on the surface.’
’Truly impressive.’
Zheng Xiu praised him again. While Kui Lang’s arrow hadn’t been enough to push him to the brink, its power had left a deep impression.
Zheng Xiu had initially suspected Kui Lang was a Mystic because when he activated his Spiritual Vision, he had vaguely seen the phantom of a doorway behind Kui Lang. He also saw Filthy Qi leaking from behind the door, which Kui Lang had used to amplify the power of his Miracle Technique.
’He did seem to say something about forcing a door open.’
It seemed Kui Lang had used some sort of Secret Technique, an ultimate move akin to Krypton Life. The more Zheng Xiu recalled the man’s pained, contorted face during the Casting, the more certain he became.
Just as he was about to bury Kui Lang’s body and show the dead some respect, Zheng Xiu’s sharp eyes spotted a pointed tip poking out from the ravaged ground.
He bent over and picked it up. It was Kui Lang’s waist token.
Kui Lang’s token had been bent to a nearly ninety-degree angle by Zheng Xiu’s Dragon Claw Carving. Zheng Xiu forced it straight and couldn’t help but let out a surprised laugh.
"Lower Six, Hu Yilang. When did he get promoted to Lower Six?"
If Zheng Xiu recalled correctly, the last "Lower Six" hadn’t been dead for very long.
’Are promotions in Ye Weiyang really this fast?’
’A light-speed promotion followed by a light-speed death in the line of duty?’
"Brother Zheng!"
"Brother Zheng!"
Two voices called out from deep within the Ghost Wail Forest.
It was Ruchen and Chu Susu.
They had followed the terrifying commotion here.
One of Chu Susu’s hands was wrapped in gauze; she was lightly injured.
The pair saw the claw-shaped crater, several meters deep, and the words died in their throats. They both drew in a sharp breath.
Ruchen looked stunned, exchanging a glance with Chu Susu.
Chu Susu asked weakly, "Was this... his... or yours, Brother Zheng?"
Chu Susu pointed at the crater.
They already had an answer in their hearts, but they still couldn’t believe it.
’How the hell could a Human do something like this?’
Zheng Xiu smiled and decided to tell a white lie. He pointed to the small, firmly packed mound of earth. "His."
"This Little Monk doesn’t believe you!" Ruchen said, shaking his head forcefully with a pout.
Chu Susu’s eyes widened. "Then how is he the one who’s dead?"
Zheng Xiu said, "He used a terrifying Miracle Technique, trying to take me down with him. I dodged. He didn’t. It’s that simple."
"Oh, I see!"
Chu Susu’s face lit up with understanding. She clapped her hands together forcefully but accidentally hit her injured one, and she immediately began whimpering and clutching the wound.
Ruchen still looked skeptical.
Zheng Xiu waved his hand. "We shouldn’t linger here. We need to leave, now!"
he said, quickly averting his gaze from a certain tree.
