Chapter 410: Chapter 410: He Seems a Little Dead

Sunxiao, rushing through the forest toward the Watchtower, stopped and stared at the moving dot indicating Qiao Xixi’s location.

Just a moment ago, she had stopped near the Watchtower. Why was she suddenly moving away from it now?

’Could it be... Xixi is in danger.’

At the thought, a thick, dark aura emanated from Sunxiao.

Suddenly, a faint noise came from behind. Sunxiao reined in his thoughts and glanced over his shoulder.

A familiar figure emerged from the darkness.

"Sunxiao?"

Sunxiao turned to see Feiyan walking toward him.

When Feiyan saw it was him, his tightly furrowed brow relaxed slightly. "I finally found you. Have you found anyone else?"

The crimson snake pupils stared at him coldly. "No."

Feiyan frowned and continued walking toward him. Sunxiao remained motionless, his snake-like eyes never leaving Feiyan.

"Are you alright? Any injuries? There are too many monsters in this forest. We need to be careful. Come on, let’s go find the others."

Sunxiao grunted in agreement. He turned to leave but suddenly stopped and looked back at Feiyan.

"You go on ahead. I’ll cover our rear."

Feiyan paused, surprised, then nodded. "Alright, let’s go."

But the moment he stepped in front, a sharp pain shot through his chest. His pupils dilated, and his irises instantly turned dark red.

A hard snake tail slowly withdrew from his chest, pulling a black beast crystal out with it.

The monster’s disguise instantly failed, and it reverted to a Lizard Beast.

"H-How did you know I wasn’t..."

The blood-stained tip of Sunxiao’s tail hooked the beast crystal as he gave the creature a look of cold disdain.

"Feiyan isn’t nearly as personable as you."

The Lizard Beast: "..."

"Monster! Die!"

Sunxiao’s serpentine eyes darkened, and his long tail whipped toward a snow-white figure that had appeared behind him.

But his opponent was fast, dodging the attack in an instant. After a brief pause, the figure launched another attack on Sunxiao.

Sunxiao sidestepped the sharp claws, then coiled his long tail around the attacker, hoisting him into the air.

The attacker’s sharp claws pierced Sunxiao’s tough, scaly skin. A flash of cold anger crossed Sunxiao’s face at the sharp pain, and with a powerful flick of his tail, he flung his opponent away.

"Idiot."

The figure, having been thrown to the ground, paused. Instead of rushing to attack again, he looked at Sunxiao with uncertainty.

"I’m way smarter than Sangze!"

This remark earned him nothing but a cold glare from Sunxiao.

At that, Feiyan completely retracted his aura, shifted back into his human form, and walked over to Sunxiao. He glanced at the very dead Lizard Beast.

"I thought you were a monster in disguise trying to trick me. You didn’t suspect me at all just now?"

Sunxiao’s snake-like eyes were ice-cold. "The monster was smarter than you."

Feiyan: "..."

"What happened to you? Weren’t you supposed to cross the river first and scout the area?"

As Sunxiao recalled what had happened, the coldness in his eyes intensified.

"We were all tricked by the monsters."

"Kunlin did take me to the other side of the river, then he turned back and left. I circled the area around the riverbank but didn’t find anything unusual."

"But the strange thing was, according to the locator, Xixi and the others had supposedly already crossed the river, yet Kunlin had taken them somewhere else entirely."

"I knew something was wrong then. Just as I was about to go find them, a monster appeared and blocked my way."

Feiyan glanced at the beast-hide pouch at Sunxiao’s waist; it was already filled with beast crystals.

"Let’s go. We’ll find Sangze first. According to the locator, he’s nearby."

"Alright."

According to the locator, they were currently closest to Sangze, then Jin Ling. Xijing, however, was the farthest away.

"What happened after Xixi, Jin Ling, and Kunlin crossed the river?"

Feiyan frowned. "Not long after Xixi and the others left, we saw Kunlin hovering over the river with them. A moment later, we saw them fall into the water. Xijing and Sangze immediately went after them to check things out, while I stayed on the bank just in case."

"But to my surprise, Kunlin flew back a short while later."

"That’s when I realized what we’d seen was likely an illusion. I immediately followed Kunlin back over the river to look for Xijing and the others, but we couldn’t find them even after circling a few times."

"After that, Kunlin brought me back to the bank first. The plan was for me to meet up with Xixi while Kunlin flew back to check on the situation. But when I got here, Xixi and the others were nowhere to be found."

"Looking at the locator, Xixi has been separated from Jin Ling, too. I don’t know how she’s doing."

At his words, both of their moods grew heavy. The forest was crawling with monsters. Even though Xixi could protect herself to some extent, they couldn’t help but worry.

"Let’s move faster."

"Right."

Both of them shifted into their beast forms and quickly vanished into the forest.

Meanwhile, Qiao Xixi, still in the water, confirmed she wasn’t being followed and checked her map.

She had gone through so much trouble to get near the Watchtower; she definitely didn’t want to stray far from it again. So even as she fled, she was trying to find a suitable hiding spot in the vicinity.

"Sprite, find me a safe place to stop."

"Host, keep going forward. Pass through that pile of rubble, then get to shore. You can hide there for a bit."

"Okay."

Following the route Sprite gave her, Qiao Xixi swam through the pile of rubble underwater. Looking up at the halo of light above, she broke through the surface.

She struggled to drag Yun Ji onto the shore, panting for breath.

This night had thoroughly exhausted her.

She didn’t rest. Forcing her tired body up, she shifted into her beast form, shook the water from her fur, and scouted the surroundings. Not far away, she discovered an abandoned wooden cabin.

Qiao Xixi was stunned. ’Who on earth would build a cabin in a hellish place like this?’

She pushed open the cabin door. The inside was covered in a thick layer of dust, but surprisingly, it was fully furnished with a table, chairs, a stool, and a bed. After a quick sweep, she went back to the shore, dragged Yun Ji into the cabin, and tossed him onto the wooden bed.

After all that, she finally plopped down onto a stool, took some dried meat, fruit, and Spiritual Spring water from her storage space, and began to wolf it all down.

Once she’d eaten and drunk her fill, Qiao Xixi finally felt like she had come back to life.

She got up and walked to the bed, looking at Yun Ji. His eyes were shut tight, and his face was as pale as a sheet of paper. After a moment’s thought, she took out some Spiritual Spring water from her storage space and poured it into his mouth.

Yun Ji wasn’t completely unconscious; as the Spiritual Spring water entered his mouth, he swallowed it on his own.

’He’s still conscious, so it probably isn’t too serious.’

Qiao Xixi glanced at his feathered garment. The cloak, which usually shimmered with a rainbow of colors in the light, was now dull and lifeless.

But strangely, she couldn’t find a single wound on his body.

’That’s strange. Could it be an internal injury?’

She reached out to check his pulse. When her fingertips touched his ice-cold hand, she froze.

"Sprite, are bird-people supposed to have low body temperatures?"

"No, Host. Except for snake beastmen, all males have higher body temperatures than females."

"Then why is Yun Ji’s temperature so low? Doesn’t it drop when you’re sleeping?"

"Host, is it possible... I’m just saying... that he might be, like, a little bit dead?"
