Chapter 405: Chapter 405: Kunlin, I Like You
Qiao Xixi sat on Jin Ling’s back, constantly keeping an eye on the map.
Among their group, they were the closest to Sunxiao, and he was also heading in their direction.
But his coordinates soon stopped moving. Qiao Xixi had a feeling he’d run into trouble and gotten trapped.
"Jin Ling, we need to hurry. Sunxiao should be just ahead."
"Alright. Hold on tight."
Qiao Xixi gripped Jin Ling’s fur tightly, her body pressed almost flat against his back.
Jin Ling let out a tiger’s roar and broke into a run, his agile form darting swiftly through the woods.
Kunlin, flying low up ahead, suddenly called out, "I see Sunxiao." With that, he picked up speed and flew forward.
"Jin Ling, let’s follow him."
"Mm."
Jin Ling picked up his pace, but even after they had covered a significant distance, there was still no sign of Sunxiao. They couldn’t even sense his presence.
"Kunlin, are you sure Sunxiao is up ahead?"
Kunlin flew a bit higher and confirmed he could see Sunxiao’s silhouette behind a large tree. However, he was too far away to see clearly, so all he could make out was a faint outline.
"It looks like him."
That answer immediately put Qiao Xixi on edge.
"Jin Ling, slow down."
After their experience with the illusion, she knew that what you see isn’t necessarily real.
"Kunlin, fly a little further ahead and see if you can get a clearer look. If not, come straight back."
Kunlin nodded and flew forward, flapping his wings rapidly.
Jin Ling followed with Qiao Xixi on his back, but they had already slowed their pace.
Qiao Xixi checked Sunxiao’s coordinates. ’According to the map, he’s in that exact spot and hasn’t moved,’ she thought. ’But Kunlin didn’t say anything about seeing him fight a monster. So why would he be standing still for no reason? That’s not normal.’
Kunlin gained some altitude and increased his speed. After flying for a while, he noticed that the figure of Sunxiao in his field of vision was still completely motionless.
At first, he thought it was simply because of the distance, so he accelerated to get closer. But after flying for another significant stretch, the figure seemed just as far away. He knew this wasn’t right. He instinctively slowed down, landing on a large tree to observe what was happening where Sunxiao was supposed to be.
He then realized that the figure had been standing motionless under that tree ever since he first spotted it. ’Wait... are my eyes being deceived again?’ he wondered.
Instead of pressing forward, Kunlin turned around to find Qiao Xixi and the others.
"Kunlin, where are you going? We’re over here."
Kunlin looked down and saw Jin Ling approaching with Qiao Xixi.
Kunlin folded his wings and landed steadily in front of Qiao Xixi.
"Kunlin, what happened? Did you see Sunxiao?"
Kunlin first nodded, then shook his head. "I’m not sure if that was really Sunxiao."
"Then it’s probably a monster in disguise. Let’s not go over there. We’ll take another path."
"Alright."
Kunlin followed behind them as they headed in a different direction. After a few moments, Qiao Xixi looked back at him.
"Kunlin, it looks like there’s a water source up ahead. I’m thirsty, let’s go get a drink."
After flying for so long, Kunlin also needed to rehydrate, so he nodded and followed them.
Before long, he saw a crystal-clear spring in the middle of the forest. The water’s surface glittered, and the very air seemed to hold the sweet coolness of the spring.
Qiao Xixi eagerly slid off Jin Ling’s back, ran to the water’s edge, and scooped up several mouthfuls with her hands.
"Jin Ling, I think I just saw some red berries by the path. Could you go pick them for me?"
Jin Ling nodded and turned to leave.
Kunlin also walked to the water’s edge and bent down, taking several large gulps of water.
The cool spring water was refreshingly sweet, and a soothing sensation spread through his body. He couldn’t help but drink a little more, only stopping when he heard a pleasant chuckle. He looked up, and the scene that met his eyes made his cold, impassive heart begin to pound wildly.
At some point, Qiao Xixi had shed her clothes and walked into the spring.
Sensing his gaze, she turned to look at him.
Their eyes met. Not only was she not angry, she even offered him a faint smile.
"The water feels so nice. Kunlin, why don’t you come in for a soak?"
Kunlin’s rational mind told him he shouldn’t, but as Qiao Xixi’s alluring face leaned in, he found himself moving toward her as if possessed.
As if impatient with his slow pace, Qiao Xixi walked over and took his hand.
Kunlin stiffened, staring at her in stunned silence. But she only smiled more coquettishly, even pressing her body against his chest.
"Kunlin, do you like me?"
Kunlin stared at her smiling face, his Adam’s apple bobbing anxiously. Even his breathing grew ragged.
He had never known what it felt like to like a female before. A male he knew had once told him that the most immediate feeling of ’like’ was simply wanting to be with her—not the simple madness of rut, but wanting to be with her no matter what you were doing.
He had never felt that way about any female, only Qiao Xixi.
He liked watching her do anything. He loved her laughter, her anger, her scolding—all of it. He just wanted to watch her forever.
When he saw her mates being intimate with her, he would become furious, wanting nothing more than to tear them to shreds.
But he knew he couldn’t. She would never accept a male who already had cubs with another female.
But now, she was approaching him of her own free will.
In that instant, the last of Kunlin’s rationality shattered.
"Kunlin, I really like you so much. From the very first time I saw you, I wanted you to be my mate. But... but Jin Ling and the others don’t like you. They won’t agree to let you become my mate, so I could only bury my feelings for you in my heart."
Hearing her confession was intoxicating to Kunlin. He wished he could fuse her into his very blood and bone, but he clung to a final thread of restraint.
"You... you’re really willing to have me as your mate?"
"Of course I am."
"Then what about your other mates?"
Back in the Black Panther Tribe, he had clearly sensed Jin Ling’s defensiveness and hostility toward him. He knew they were simply afraid he would get too close to Qiao Xixi, so he had deliberately kept his distance from her at the time.
But damn it, his gaze and attention had always drifted to her against his will. Perhaps he had started developing feelings for her even back then.
"Aren’t you worried your other mates will object?"
He knew she cared a great deal about her mates.
But to his surprise, Qiao Xixi reached up, her arms slowly draping around him. She let out a playful laugh and said, "If you kill them, they won’t be around to object, will they?"
