Chapter 404: Chapter 404: Where Did They Go?
"Jin Ling!"
"Xixi, I’m here. Don’t be afraid."
The moment Qiao Xixi spoke, she heard Jin Ling’s voice from behind her. She was about to turn around when a thought struck her, and her body froze in place.
’Have I been caught in an illusion again? Is the one calling my name not Jin Ling at all, but a hallucination created by the monster?’
With that in mind, she didn’t make any rash moves. Instead, she listened quietly to the sounds around her.
"Xixi! Xixi, where are you, Xixi?"
Jin Ling’s anxious voice came again, still from behind her. She tentatively called out, "Jin Ling?"
"Xixi, I’m here. Don’t move. I can sense your aura, but I can’t see where you are."
Qiao Xixi was certain now. The person speaking was indeed Jin Ling.
"Jin Ling, I can’t see you either."
"Don’t move around, whatever you do, and don’t look back. I’ll figure out a way to find you."
"Okay."
Hearing Jin Ling’s voice, Qiao Xixi calmed down. ’Something must be clouding our vision, that’s why we can’t see each other.’
She formed a hand seal. "Wind."
A gentle breeze stirred the air, making her hair fly. She stood quietly in place.
Suddenly, a heaven-shaking tiger’s roar erupted from behind her, followed by the sound of something shattering.
"ROAR!"
"Wind!"
The wind intensified, and the forest before Qiao Xixi’s eyes began to distort.
A sharp, raspy voice suddenly rang out from above her. "Little female, I didn’t expect you to know how to command the wind. How impressive... But this Illusion Array of mine can’t be blown away by a simple Wind Skill."
’An Illusion Array?’
"System, what’s an Illusion Array?"
"Host, an Illusion Array traps people by shifting the scenery around them."
"You mean Jin Ling and I are still in the same place, but we can’t see each other because the scenery is blocking our view? Then how do I break this Illusion Array?"
"Find the monster that created the Illusion Array and kill it."
"How do I find it?"
"Carpet bomb it, Host."
Qiao Xixi’s expression faltered slightly. "But what if I accidentally hurt Jin Ling?"
"Jin Ling will definitely hear the commotion. Just do what you have to do. He can protect himself."
"Okay."
Qiao Xixi formed another hand seal. "Wind, rise."
A great gust of wind swept Qiao Xixi up, carrying her into mid-air.
"Female, don’t waste your energy. No matter what you do, you can’t escape."
A chilling glint appeared in Qiao Xixi’s eyes. "Is that so? How will we know if I don’t try?"
After rising into the air, she had expected to get a clear view of the situation below. But as soon as she ascended, a thick white mist rose from the ground, completely obscuring her vision.
’Kunlin was right. It’s hard to get your bearings, even if you fly.’
"Jin Ling, I’m going to use the Bubble Fruits!"
"ROAR!"
A tiger’s roar echoed. Qiao Xixi knew it was Jin Ling’s reply. Having received his response, she had nothing left to worry about.
Qiao Xixi hurled a Bubble Fruit into the white mist.
"BOOM!"
A thunderous explosion erupted. ’If it’s using the shifting scenery to trick our eyes, then I’ll just blow the scenery up! I refuse to believe I won’t be able to see Jin Ling and catch that monster then.’
"Female, whatever you do is useless."
"BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!"
A series of explosions rang out.
The white mist below remained thick, but Qiao Xixi didn’t give up. She had plenty of Bubble Fruits in her storage space, anyway.
"BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!"
Even from mid-air, Qiao Xixi could feel the vibrations from the bombarded area.
"Female, you dare blow up my things? You’re courting death!"
"What, scared already? This is far from enough!"
Qiao Xixi’s hands didn’t stop. Finally, just as she was about to throw another Bubble Fruit, Jin Ling’s roar sounded from below once more.
"Die!"
"AHH!" That was the monster’s shriek.
’I must have bombed it out of hiding.’
Qiao Xixi stopped what she was doing. She didn’t rush down, but instead listened to the commotion below from her vantage point.
Suddenly, after another of Jin Ling’s heaven-shaking roars, the white mist beneath her feet slowly began to dissipate. Looking down, she saw Jin Ling was actually just a short distance away.
"Jin Ling."
Jin Ling looked up toward the sky.
"Xixi."
Qiao Xixi descended back to the ground and quickly walked toward Jin Ling.
When she reached him, she noticed a black, bird-like beast at his feet.
"Is that the monster?"
Jin Ling lifted his tiger paw. The black bird had been completely crushed beneath it. He hooked a sharp claw into its belly and pulled out a black Crystal Stone.
"It was. Xixi, are you okay?"
Qiao Xixi shook her head. "I’m fine."
"Get on my back first. Sunxiao didn’t seem to hear all that commotion just now. I suspect Kunlin was enchanted by this monster during his first trip across the river."
’This means Kunlin probably took Sunxiao to a different location. In this kind of situation, it’s most likely that we’ve all been separated.’
"We have to find them, quickly."
"Right."
Qiao Xixi opened her map to check their locations. Sure enough, she found that Sunxiao was some distance away from them.
"Jin Ling, I see Sunxiao moving in our direction." ’He probably realized something was wrong and is coming to find us.’
"Okay, let’s head toward him. We’ll meet up faster that way."
"Alright."
According to the map, only Sunxiao was on the other side of the river with them for now. Feiyan and the others hadn’t crossed yet.
Qiao Xixi found this strange. ’The fight just now took long enough for Kunlin to make several round trips. Why hasn’t he brought Feiyan and the others over yet?’
Just as she was wondering, she saw Xijing’s location marker appear in the river. Her heart leaped into her throat.
"Xijing fell into the river!"
Jin Ling didn’t slow down. "What about Sangze?"
The words had barely left Jin Ling’s mouth when Qiao Xixi saw Sangze’s marker also move into the river, where it remained stationary. Meanwhile, Feiyan’s location had just appeared on their side of the river, but he was even farther away than Sunxiao.
Qiao Xixi’s expression grew grim. ’They might have also run into the monster that created the illusion. I wonder if they’ll be able to break free.’
Jin Ling suddenly stopped.
Qiao Xixi pulled her attention away from the map and carefully observed their surroundings.
Suddenly, Kunlin swooped down from the sky. A flicker of joy flashed in his eyes when he saw Qiao Xixi.
"Qiao Xixi, female, I finally found you!"
Qiao Xixi glanced at him; Feiyan and the others weren’t with him.
"Kunlin, did something happen? Where are Feiyan and the others?"
Hearing this, Kunlin’s face turned grim. "I just dropped Feiyan off on this side of the river. When I went back to get Sangze and the others, they were gone."
"Gone?!"
Kunlin nodded. "I searched up and down the bank but couldn’t find them. I checked along the river’s edge again, but still nothing."
’Xijing is a merman, so he can go underwater. It’s understandable if he couldn’t be found. But Sangze can’t travel by water, so how could Kunlin not see him?’
