Chapter 438: Chapter 311: Sudden Slumber, Incoming Malice
The only thing to do now was to pray for Lin Li in their hearts, hoping he could find a place to take shelter before the downpour began.
...
The house Lin Li had his eye on was located in a developing plot of land in the eastern part of the city. This plot was backed by a small hill, and a small river flowed in front of it.
Nestled by the mountains and water with beautiful scenery, it was a piece of prime real estate according to feng shui. The people who could afford to buy a plot of land and build a house here were all quite well-off.
So, one could imagine that once all the houses on this plot were built, the property values here would rise even more.
However, Lin Li wasn’t a real estate speculator, so he didn’t care how much the property’s value might increase in the future.
CRACK...
A sudden thunderclap cracked through the air. On the riverside street paved with bluestone slabs, the horse pulling the carriage jumped in fright, and its speed dropped abruptly.
The coachman was clearly an old hand. Encountering such a situation, he calmly pulled on the reins and shouted some soothing words to the horse.
The horse, startled by the thunder, quickly calmed down upon hearing the coachman’s reassuring words.
The girl, her face beaming with joy as the deal was about to close, was just as startled by the thunder as the horse. However, she quickly composed herself.
"What a loud thunderclap. It looks like it’s going to rain soon," the girl said, patting her chest.
Lin Li gazed out the carriage’s glass window at the changing weather. It felt as if dark clouds were bearing down, threatening to crush the city.
"Yeah, it’s about to rain. And from the looks of it, it’s not going to be a small one."
"We just had a huge downpour the day before yesterday. I can’t believe it’s going to rain again after only one day. It’s strange... In previous years, we never got such heavy storms this month..."
Lin Li wasn’t a native of Dongwu City, so he naturally didn’t know what the rain was usually like at this time of year. He just listened quietly to the girl, nodding with a small smile, not interjecting.
The house Lin Li was about to buy was some distance from the real estate agency. It would take over half an hour by carriage to reach their destination.
Just as he was about to close his eyes and rest, the girl in front of him, who had seemed quite energetic just moments ago, suddenly yawned. A wave of sleepiness seemed to wash over her. She swayed a few times, then slumped forward onto the small table in front of her, fast asleep.
’Huh? What’s going on? How did she just fall asleep all of a sudden?’
’To just fall asleep on the table right in front of a customer... that’s not exactly professional, is it?’
Lin Li looked at the sleeping girl, assuming she must have been so exhausted that she couldn’t help but fall asleep on the table in front of him.
But this thought was quickly shattered when the carriage he was in came to a stop. Then, from outside, came the sound of something falling, a THUD against wood.
’Hmm?’
’This is... a Spiritual Energy Wave...’
Hearing someone fall outside the curtain, combined with the girl suddenly slumping over asleep, Lin Li immediately knew something was wrong.
He extended his Perception and detected a Spiritual Energy Wave not far from him.
Moreover, it wasn’t just one Spiritual Energy Wave; there were five in total.
By the riverside, on the shaded, bluestone-paved street, stood five burly men. They were tall, had vicious expressions, wore coarse linen short shirts, and radiated Spiritual Energy Waves as they stared maliciously at the carriage they had stopped.
The curtain was pushed aside.
A young man, not very old, only about twenty-one or twenty-two, with delicate skin, stepped out of the carriage.
He first glanced at the fallen coachman, then his gaze shifted to the tall men radiating Spiritual Energy Waves.
"Boss, the kid’s out."
"He’s not even scared of us. This kid’s got some nerve!"
"Let’s hurry this up!"
"Yeah, we need to be quick. This area isn’t fully developed yet, so besides some construction workers passing by, ordinary people rarely come here. But you never know, someone might happen to wander by and see us."
Seeing Lin Li emerge from the carriage, the burly men didn’t bother to be discreet, speaking directly to their leader right in front of him.
The bald man, who was stout and powerfully built, had spent a lot of time with his four underlings tracking their target. They had finally found a suitable place to make their move, but he remembered his Gang Leader’s instructions and didn’t immediately order an attack on Lin Li.
"Yesterday evening, in an alley off Yangquan Street, two masked men were committing a robbery. They ended up dead. That was your doing, wasn’t it?"
The burly, bald man stared intently at Lin Li, watching for any change in his expression as he asked the question.
When Lin Li had stepped out of the carriage, he’d seen that the unconscious coachman and the soundly sleeping girl inside were in the same condition.
He knew that the two of them must have been affected by some kind of Superpower from the five malicious Cultivators before him, which caused them to fall into this deep sleep.
’As long as they’re unharmed, it’s fine. A sleep-inducing Superpower like this should have a time limit; they’ll probably wake up after a while.’
’If these two innocent strangers were harmed or killed because of these Cultivators, who are clearly here for me, I would feel extremely guilty.’
After confirming the two had only fallen unconscious and were in no mortal danger, Lin Li breathed a sigh of relief. It was then that he heard the burly, bald man’s question.
He instantly understood why these five Cultivators were looking for him.
’Tsk, so these guys are here for revenge over those two scumbags who died yesterday...’
Lin Li clicked his tongue. He didn’t deny what he had done yesterday, replying straightforwardly to the bald man who had questioned him.
"That’s right, I did it. I was on my way home yesterday evening when I ran into those two scumbags. They were robbing a defenseless woman, and they’d even drawn a knife to get rough. I couldn’t stand by and watch, so I took care of them."
The burly, bald man and his four underlings were all shocked and enraged to hear Lin Li so nonchalantly admit to killing their brothers.
Normally, when faced with such a question, shouldn’t a person deny it first? Then, after they surrounded and captured him, they would torture him until he finally admitted what he’d done.
That’s how the script was supposed to go. This young man in front of them wasn’t following it at all.
Lin Li leaped down from the carriage. He walked slowly toward the five malicious enemies, his tone level as he asked a question.
"You’re here to get revenge for those two scumbags, aren’t you? Judging by the looks on your faces, I’d say so.
"Can you tell me how you knew I was the one who took care of them? I’m quite curious. There shouldn’t have been any other witnesses at the scene yesterday."
"The absolute arrogance! Boss, he’s already confessed. Let’s get him!" one of the underlings with an earring shouted angrily. He had never met someone so insolent since joining the Red Blood Gang, and just a few words were enough to make his blood boil.
"Yeah, Boss, let’s do it! I can’t wait to break his arms and legs and hear him wail and beg for his life before he dies..." another underling, one with a scar on his forehead, said viciously.
CRACK...
A clap of thunder exploded from the inky-black clouds, drowning out the underlings’ venomous back-and-forth.
On this quest for revenge, the burly, bald man, as the leader, didn’t need his underlings’ prompting. He too was itching to make a move on the incredibly arrogant young man before him.
"Get him! But don’t kill him. I want to take him back and let him enjoy my latest invention in torture devices."
At the bald man’s command, his four underlings, who could no longer hold back, all charged toward the expressionless Lin Li.
