Chapter 1475: Meet Krono
Erend, Eccar, and Aesa immediately nodded. For the first time since learning about the true nature of the Black Rage, a small glimmer of hope finally appeared before them. The burden weighing upon their hearts had not lessened in the slightest, but at least they now possessed a possible direction to pursue.
If there was anyone in existence who might understand the origins of the Black Rage and the mysteries surrounding Dragonborns, it would undoubtedly be Krono.
However, among the four of them, Sylven remained visibly confused. His eyes moved between Erend, Eccar, and Aesa as he tried to understand the conversation.
"Uhm, sorry," Sylven said awkwardly. "But I think all of you forgot that I’m here."
The three Dragonborn immediately turned toward him before realization dawned upon their expressions.
"Oh, right," Erend said while rubbing the back of his neck. "You don’t know anything about Krono yet."
"I guess we should explain things first," Eccar added.
Erend then began explaining who Krono was while Eccar occasionally added a few details of his own. As usual, Aesa mostly remained silent throughout the explanation and only nodded whenever necessary.
Fortunately, they did not need to explain everything in detail. Krono’s story was far too long and complicated for a simple explanation. For now, Sylven only needed to understand the most important parts.
"Krono was an ancient Time Dragon," Erend explained. "He died during our previous battle against a being called Zerathul."
Sylven frowned slightly as he listened.
"Before his death, Krono divided his soul and power among the three of us," Eccar continued while pointing at himself, Erend, and Aesa. "However, his power has remained dormant ever since. We haven’t had the opportunity to properly study or train it."
"Most of our time has been spent protecting this world," Erend added. "Besides, Time Magic isn’t exactly something we can casually experiment with."
"The last time I did it... it was not going well. And because Krono is the Time Dragon," Eccar continued, "there’s a good chance he knows things far beyond our understanding. His power isn’t bound by time in the same way ours are."
Sylven remained silent for several moments as he processed everything he had just heard.
"Well..." he finally said while scratching his cheek. "I still don’t completely understand everything, but I think that’s enough for now."
At the very least, he immediately understood why they wanted to speak with Krono’s soul. If anyone could possess knowledge regarding the Black Rage throughout countless eras, it would undoubtedly be the being who has time power.
"So where do we start?" Eccar asked.
"Let’s do the usual," Erend replied.
Aesa slightly narrowed her eyes. "Meditating?"
Erend shrugged helplessly before answering, "That’s the only method I know that allows us to access things hidden inside our subconscious."
The moment those words left his mouth, Eccar, Aesa, and Sylven immediately showed expressions of hesitation.
The trauma from earlier was still fresh in their minds.
Only an hour ago, they had been forced to relive the greatest tragedies of their lives. The mere thought of entering their subconscious once more made their hearts grow heavy.
Erend looked at the three of them and immediately understood what they were thinking. He could hardly blame them after what they had experienced.
"I’ll try first," Erend said. "I have a theory."
The three Dragonborn turned toward him.
"Our subconscious won’t necessarily show us something we don’t want to see," he continued. "Earlier, the Black Rage dragged all of you into your deepest regrets because it was your first encounter with it. But if we focus solely on speaking with Krono’s soul instead of confronting the Black Rage, then perhaps our subconscious won’t lead us there at all."
"Are you sure about that?" Sylven asked uncertainly.
Erend remained silent for several moments before shaking his head.
"Not really," he admitted honestly. "But we have to try. Besides, we have the Sky Anchor helping us right now."
Eventually, the three Dragonborn reluctantly agreed. None of them particularly liked the idea of returning to their subconscious so soon, but Erend was right. This was currently their only lead.
Several minutes later, the four Dragonborn once again arrived inside the underground chamber.
The enormous crystalline monolith of the Sky Anchor stood before them while radiating its familiar soothing light.
Velrion did not accompany them this time. The Archmage had already completed the suppressing artifacts and was undoubtedly busy dealing with his own responsibilities. Moreover, all they needed right now was the Sky Anchor’s assistance.
After hearing their explanation, the Sky Anchor immediately agreed to help without hesitation.
"If speaking with the soul of Time Dragon can help all of you overcome the Black Rage," she said gently, "then I shall gladly lend my assistance."
Without wasting any more time, Erend sat down cross-legged before the Sky Anchor and slowly closed his eyes.
This time, he carefully focused his thoughts. He did not wish to confront the Black Rage. He did not wish to relive painful memories. His sole objective was simple. He wanted to speak with Krono.
Erend slowly guided his consciousness inward and began descending into the depths of his subconscious once more.
The sensation felt strangely familiar. It was as though he had thrown himself into an endless sea and continued sinking deeper and deeper into its unfathomable depths. Thick walls of white mist surrounded him from every direction while silence engulfed his senses.
Time lost all meaning within this place.
Eventually, after what felt like an eternity, a figure slowly appeared beyond the endless fog.
Golden light illuminated the surrounding darkness as Erend finally saw him. Krono stood before him in his human form.
His long golden hair flowed elegantly behind him while his black and golden robes radiated an ancient and regal aura befitting the Time Dragon himself. Despite existing merely as a fragmented soul after his death, Krono’s presence remained overwhelmingly majestic.
The ancient Dragon looked exactly as Erend remembered him. Even death had failed to diminish his grandeur.
Krono smiled at him. There was a hint of sadness on that smile.
