Chapter 1474: Someone To Ask

Erend looked at his three companions as they lay on the underground chamber’s floor. His heart sank at the sight before him. The Black Rage was far crueler than its name suggested. It did not simply make Dragonborns lose themselves in blind rage. Instead, it seemed to drag them into the deepest and darkest parts of their hearts before forcing them to relive the pain they had spent so long trying to bury.

He let out a long sigh and decided to leave them alone for the moment. There was nothing he could do to ease their suffering right now. They looked utterly defeated. Whatever they had experienced inside their subconscious had clearly broken through emotional walls they had carefully built over the course of their long lives.

Erend slowly walked toward Velrion and immediately noticed the Archmage’s expression. Shock was clearly written across his face as his eyes stayed fixed upon the three Dragonborn lying helplessly on the ground.

This outcome had gone far beyond anything Velrion had anticipated.

"Are the artifacts ready?" Erend asked.

Velrion didn’t answer immediately. His gaze remained fixed on Eccar, Aesa, and Sylven. These were the mighty Dragonborns who had saved Leonora from destruction and battled a Cosmic Being to protect an entire world. Yet now they lay on the cold stone floor after being defeated by their own emotions.

The sight left him speechless.

"Velrion?" Erend called once more.

The Archmage finally blinked and returned to his senses before looking toward him. "What?"

"The artifacts. Are they done?"

"Oh..." Velrion said as he rubbed his forehead. "Almost. Give me a moment."

Erend simply nodded.

The suppressing artifacts had already been completed for the most part. What remained was merely the final process of stabilization and enchantment. Velrion raised his hand and several Magical circles immediately appeared around the three silver necklaces floating quietly beside him.

Golden runes engraved themselves across the metallic surface while the crystals embedded within the pendants began glowing with a white light.

Velrion carefully connected the Sky Anchor’s power to each artifact before weaving several layers of suppression Magic into their cores. Just like what he did with Erend’s.

Only a few seconds later, the three suppressing artifacts floated gently before him.

"They’re finished," Velrion said quietly.

Meanwhile, the Sky Anchor once again changed the nature of her power. The sharp disruptive light from earlier disappeared and was replaced by the familiar soothing warmth that gently enveloped the three Dragonborn.

"I will help calm their minds," she said softly.

The warm white light embraced Eccar, Aesa, and Sylven like a comforting blanket. The heavy pressure within the underground chamber gradually faded as the remnants of the Black Rage’s influence were suppressed.

Several minutes passed before the three Dragonborn finally began showing signs of recovery.

Eccar was the first to move. He slowly pushed himself into a sitting position before roughly wiping his face with his sleeve. His eyes remained slightly red from crying.

Aesa sat up shortly afterward while quietly lowering her head. Sylven remained silent as he slowly sat beside the others.

Even though they appeared calmer now, the sorrow lingering in their eyes had yet to disappear.

Erend walked toward them and handed each of them a silver necklace.

"This is the suppressing artifact," he explained. "It will suppress the Black Rage’s influence for the time being."

The three Dragonborn immediately accepted the artifacts without hesitation. In fact, they appeared almost eager to wear them. After experiencing what the Black Rage had shown them, none of them wanted to feel its presence any more than necessary.

The moment they wore the necklaces, they visibly relaxed slightly.

Erend then crouched before them and carefully observed their expressions. Their eyes still carried profound sadness and memories that had probably remained buried for centuries. There was no anger or madness within them. Only exhaustion.

"How are you feeling?" Erend asked quietly.

"Bad," Eccar immediately answered without hesitation. "Really bad. I fucking hate it."

"Same," Aesa replied numbly.

Sylven didn’t even bother answering. He simply lowered his head in silence.

Erend nodded slowly. Their reactions were more than enough to tell him how badly the Black Rage had affected them.

"I don’t think we should continue today," Erend said. "What do all of you think?"

"I agree," Aesa immediately answered.

Eccar and Sylven silently nodded.

The problem was never their physical strength. Dragonborns were among the strongest beings in existence. But this battle wasn’t against an enemy standing before them.

They were fighting themselves. And that was far more difficult than defeating a Cosmic Being.

Erend slowly stood up and looked around the chamber. "I think we’re done for today."

He turned toward Velrion and the Sky Anchor. Both of them nodded in understanding.

No one objected.

Approximately one hour later, everyone gathered inside the infirmary once more.

What had happened inside the underground chamber remained known only to the four Dragonborn, Velrion, and the Sky Anchor. Something as dangerous and personal as the Black Rage was not information that could ever become public knowledge.

By now, Eccar, Aesa, and Sylven looked considerably better. Once they were no longer directly confronting the Black Rage, their emotions gradually stabilized and their morale slowly returned.

None of them asked what the others had seen inside their subconscious. They understood that those memories were deeply personal. Everyone carried wounds within their hearts and some questions were simply better left unasked for now.

Eventually, Sylven broke the silence.

"I don’t know if we can ever overcome this," he said quietly. "If ever."

No one immediately answered him.

The others understood exactly why he felt that way. After everything they had experienced, there were no comforting words that could make the situation better.

But Erend refused to allow himself to fall into despair. If he gave up now, then everything he had fought for as a Dragonborn would eventually become meaningless.

"We have to find a way," Erend said firmly as he looked at his companions. Determination burned brightly within his eyes.

"But how?" Aesa asked.

Erend shook his head slightly. "I don’t know. Not yet. But we have to keep trying."

Once again, silence filled the infirmary as everyone began thinking of possible solutions.

Eventually, Eccar’s eyes widened slightly as though he had suddenly remembered something important.

"Krono’s soul," he said.

Everyone immediately turned toward him.

"Krono’s soul was divided among the three of us. Me, Erend, and Aesa," Eccar continued. "Why don’t we ask him?"

Erend paused for a moment before slowly nodding. "That’s actually a good idea."

If there was anyone who might know more about the Black Rage and the true nature of Dragonborns, it would be the Ancient Time Dragon.
