Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Scanning... It failed

One of the undead noticed him. The moment this happened, the undead didn’t charge towards him instead it growled loudly at them.

In an instant, every single undead in front of them was looking at them. He understood what the first undead just did. It growled to shift the attention of the other undead to them.

Suddenly, the army of undead parted in two and created a path in the middle. He frowned and thought to himself.

"Why did they create a path?"

His question was answered just a second later. An undead riding on the back of a horse walked towards them. The undead’s entire body was covered in thick black armor and wielded a long thin sword.

The horse also wore thick armor plating. The undead and the horses wore such thick armor plating that only their eyes were visible to him.

Riven didn’t panic, instead, his gaze lingered on the approaching undead riding a horse and he mumbled.

"Scan."

The system whispered into his ears.

(Scan failed!)

(The level difference is too high!)

His eyes narrowed but this wasn’t unexpected considering that all the undead had created a path for him to walk through.

Instead, his gaze swept across the entire army — he scanned every single undead that he could see.

As he kept scanning one undead after another, his face darkened. By the time he was done scanning the entire army, a chill ran down his spine and his face turned as black as coal itself.

His already-dried-up tongue became even drier, and his entire body trembled in shock. Ayala, who was beside him, asked.

"What’s wrong mister?"

Riven mumbled his voice full of despair.

"Scan them and you will know."

Ayala didn’t say a word; instead, she stared at the undead in front of them, and with every passing second... her face grew pale.

"All my scans have failed... that means most of the undead’s level is above 56... Wh..."

Before she could finish, Riven interrupted and said.

"We need to escape!"

However, before he could command the devil slayer to run, the undead riding on its horse pointed its sword towards them and growled loudly.

The moment this happened, the entire army of undead lunged towards them. He grabbed the back of the devil slayer and roared.

"Run! We need to outrun them if we are to survive!"

In an instant, the devil slayer charged towards the opposite direction with all its might, doing everything to outrun the army of undead beside them.

While Riven looked behind them and kept an eye on the army behind them. Most of the undeads wore an armor — only a few of them had bandages wrapped around their bodies.

Bandages wrapped around some undead body flew towards him with incredible speed. This wasn’t all... There were also a dozen arrows flying towards him.

He wanted to manifest a sword to cut them all in half but when he tried — the system whispered into his ears.

(You don’t have enough mana to use mana manifestation!)

"Damn it!"

Left with no choice, he just helped the devil slayer dodge by keeping an eye on the army behind him and issuing commands whenever he spotted danger that the devil slayer couldn’t normally see.

"Move left!"

"Move right!"

"Move your head to the right!"

Despite all of his guidance, the devil slayer finally failed to dodge one of its attacks. Bandages wrapped around one of its legs and it pulled its legs backwards.

The devil slayer lost its balance and slammed onto the ground with a loud thud but it quickly got up. However, the melee fighters of the undead were rapidly closing in on them.

Seeing this, Riven roared.

"Run! Hurry, we don’t have much time!"

Devil Slayer got up and charged forward. However before it could run, one of the undead jumped onto the Devil Slayer’s back and drove its sword back.

Devil Slayer let out a roar of pain but it didn’t shake off the undead from its back because Riven was present.

Riven quickly kicked the undead with all his might. It fell off the devil slayer’s back with ease. He pulled the undead’s sword out and swung it around, destroying the incoming projectiles.

He glanced at the devil slayer who was still standing still and roared.

"Run!"

The devil slayer charged forward and continued running.

As the devil slayer continued running, it failed to dodge more and more approaching projectiles even with Riven’s help. Arrows hit its body and got lodged between its flesh. Blue liquid flowed from its wounds.

That was blood...

Just like the sand inside the body of the undead... its blood had also turned blue.

Devil Slayer also got slower and slower with each passing second.

Due to the speed of the Devil Slayer decreasing because of the injuries, the undead riding a horse drew closer. It was just a few inches away from them.

The undead pointed his sword towards the devil slayer and thrusted it forward. But before it could hit their bodies, everything changed.

A brilliant white light exploded from the place where the undead riding on a horse was.

This wasn’t all... a thunderous sound of metal colliding with one another resounded through his ears as a minor shockwave traveled across the abandoned city.

And when the light cleared, he saw a figure blocking the attack of the undead with a heavy axe. He took a closer look at the figure and his eyes widened in shock.

The figure had a messy black hairstyle and wore a blue robe with a symbol of a dark, jagged crown fused with a broken star-shaped ring emblazoned onto its surface.

However, the entire symbol on the robe was crossed with two long red lines. This wasn’t all, the figure turned around to them.

The moment he saw his face... his identity became clear. He was a human and not a normal human. He gritted his teeth and thought to himself.

"Based on that symbol he must be... a mem..."

The man cut him off and whispered just loud enough for Riven to hear him.

"I don’t believe in the Supremacy ideology."
