Chapter 71: The Dream System

As he watched the crying girl’s legacy closely, he realized she was not just repeating the same things on a loop.

"Please help... sniff, sniff."

"Why did the damn System have to arrange it like this... sniff, sniff."

"After so long, I finally... I finally managed to seek help..."

"It even put that damn firefly’s legacy right beside mine..."

"Talk about bad promotion..."

"I hope his hair burns off and he goes bald..."

Night raised his eyebrows. This girl knows that [Blaze]’s legacy is right beside hers...

He wanted to check it out, since he had been chasing after the source of the voice for quite a while already.

Now, he felt hopeful that it wouldn’t just be blind charity on his part, but that this girl might actually be able to help him as well.

Most might think his choices were questionable, but the more time he spent here, the more he felt this entire legacy business was a massive hoax.

For many, inheriting one would be a huge boost, but to him, it looked like a cheap trick. The owners of these legacies clearly seemed to have their own agendas.

He already had enough trouble on his plate and he didn’t feel like becoming an errand boy for some god just because they were born before him and managed to accumulate more power from an early start.

Of course, if it was a last resort, he wouldn’t mind. Also, he felt this girl might not be as terrible as she sounded...

Making up his mind, his hand inched closer. He heard the girl’s breath hitch and when he finally touched the floating purple legacy, he heard her voice clearly.

"It feels familiar... where have I felt this?"

...

Night appeared inside the legacy, which looked like a small, enclosed room.

In the corner, a girl sat on the ground. She huddled in the shadows of the room, her spine curved against the cold wall.

Her arms were banded tightly around her knees, her knuckles turning bone-white from how hard she was gripping them.

She looked up at Night and pleaded, "Please, help me leave."

Night walked closer to her. She had long white hair and vivid purple eyes; she looked like a fragile doll.

Night thought about it, unsure.

Without his [Beast Instinct] skill, he didn’t know whether the situation was favorable or a trap. As for the [Nightmare Domain], it was silent as always.

Seeing him not say anything, tears pooled in her big eyes, her lips quivering. "I... I will try my best to help you."

Night shook his head. Just as she was about to bawl, thinking he had refused her, he sighed and said, "Okay, why not?"

Immediately upon hearing that, her face bloomed like a spring flower, her tears disappearing as if they had been a mere illusion.

He received a System notification. For some reason, he hadn’t received one when he first entered.

[Do you wish to receive The Dream System?]

[Disclaimer: Choose it at your own risk. The System is not responsible for any mishaps.]

[Y/N]

Looking at the ominous prompt, he didn’t know what to think.

Seeing the girl staring up at him so hopefully... this looked like the absolute perfect scam.

The girl, seeing him not accept it immediately, got up and came close to him, their faces too close for comfort.

She puffed out her chest and tried to look as confident as possible.

"Don’t worry, I designed it myself with all my effort."

"It is completely safe."

"I don’t understand why others get scared and run away at this step every single time."

Night had indeed made many questionable choices up until now, but this one took the cake.

Night asked suspiciously, "You made this system?"

She frowned. "I don’t understand much either. But I am sure it is the best."

Night narrowed his eyes. Does she not remember, or is she just fooling me?

Night then decided to test her. "What if I don’t want it?"

She immediately teared up again; it looked like she was summoning the waterworks on command. "Why?! I worked so hard to make it... why not just give it a try?"

"You will not stop me from leaving?" Night asked.

"Is my system really that unappealing?!" she asked in pure shock.

It doesn’t look like she will stop me, Night realized. It’s more like she genuinely doesn’t understand why I would want to leave...

Closing his eyes, Night thought for a moment as she waited patiently.

"Okay."

Without waiting for any more of her melodrama, he mentally selected ’Yes’.

[Congratulations. You have cleared the Legacy of the Dream.]

Immediately, he saw the girl’s surprised, excited face as her body dissolved and turned into a swirling purple mist. The small room also started breaking down into mist around them.

[Installing...]

[Welcome to "The Dream System"]

Before he could even check the interface, he felt an arm lightly wrap around his neck; not aggressively, but gently.

It felt too big to be the arm of the small girl.

He was pulled backward, and suddenly he felt a soft bosom pressing against the back of his head.

Looking up, he saw a face so breathtakingly beautiful that he felt it was downright unfair to the rest of the world.

It belonged to a woman with the exact same white hair and purple eyes as the girl, but this woman looked mature in a very weird way. As if she was a lot, lot older than she physically appeared.

As if reading his thoughts, she said with a hypnotizing smile, "[I am not old, boy, just... more experienced.]"

Seeing his blank stare, which showed zero survival instincts, she clicked her tongue. "[You are really gullible. Still, it works for me, otherwise I don’t know how many more eras I would have been stuck here. That is, if I even managed to preserve myself.]"

Night finally regained his wits. He tried to pull away from her grasp, but she held him tighter with a slight pout." [Am I that ugly? I haven’t used this mortal face in a while, but I know it’s at least decent.]"

Night’s lips twitched. This is just ’decent’? I doubt even AI could manage to depict you.

"[AI? Those would indeed not be able to depict me... especially the ones you seem familiar with. Still, it is nice that you find my face pleasant.]"

Night would have loved to have a proper conversation, since she didn’t seem anything like that crazy ’Legendary Beast Emperor’, but it was really hard to look at her face from this awkward angle.

"[I am sorry if this is uncomfortable]," she said softly, "[but soon I will fully dissolve into the system and it might take a long time for me to be able to exist outside... or this might probably be the last time I ever get to be outside like this.]"

She sighed softly." [As for what I can read from your memories right now... this ’Legendary Beast Emperor’ needs to be thoroughly disciplined, doesn’t he?]"

Looking at Night awkwardly nodding, she laughed. It sounded truly mesmerizing and dream-like.

"[We don’t have much time like this. Tell me all about yourself]",she urged.

Feeling increasingly comfortable with her, Night told her all about his life from the very beginning, even including the fragmented memories of his past life.

From time to time, she would ask questions or prompt him to explain certain things, acting as if she couldn’t just read his memories to know everything in a split second.

When he reached the part about the forest, right when he was escaping the facility with Death, she interjected.

"[It was me who tweaked your [Beast Instinct] skill, making it more attuned to the Luck and Destiny Aspects.]"

Night blinked in surprise. "How?"

"[We can talk about me later. You continue.]"

Night didn’t mind. He could see that the room around them was a lot fainter than before, looking almost like it would disappear at any moment.

When he reached the part about him hearing a girl’s crying voice...

She looked a little embarrassed. "[Really? I wasn’t completely bawling my eyes out, was I?]"

Night awkwardly changed the topic. She gracefully acted like she didn’t notice.

And when he reached the part where he saw [Blaze]’s legacy right next door, she looked visibly annoyed.

"[He already has a family to take care of. Does he really have so much free time that he needs to meddle in other people’s business...?]"

Night said, "I think it’s because of the Divine Artifact I have."

"[Ah, yes. You must have acquired some of his Records because of it, making him notice you. But enough about oldies like him. Then what happened?]"

Night then told her everything, right up until the moment he received her initial System notification.

Looking down at him, she said softly, "[You know, if you really don’t want the dream system, after you leave this event, you can simply unbind it. I will just find some other host.]"

Night just shook his head, which made her smile even more beautifully.

By now, he was somewhat used to her divine charm, so he wasn’t affected too much. Besides, he was just a 7-year-old; hormones were not a pressing issue for him.... yet...

She finally removed her arms from around him. Standing directly in front of him, she said, "[I am Dream. And you are?]"

Night looked up into her purple eyes. "I am Night."

He paused, a small smirk forming on his face.

"No..."

"I am [Nightmare]."

Dream smiled warmly as her body and the room completely dissolved into purple mist, flowing directly into Night’s chest.

"[Dream and Nightmare? Interesting...]"
