Chapter 160: Chapter 160: in danger
Jarek choked, his hands gripping Cassian’s massive wrist as the steel of his armor began to crush against his throat. "She... she was dying here, Cassian," Jarek rasped out, his voice thick with blood. "You are... a monster. You only know... how to build cages. She would have withered into... nothing."
"Then she would have withered as mine," Cassian growled, his voice dropping into a dark, terrifying register that shook the very foundations of the mountain.
*Rip.*
With a sudden, brutal twist of his hand, Cassian did not use a weapon. His sharp, dark fingernails sliced through the thick steel plates of Jarek’s chest armor as if it were soft paper, burying his hand deep into the warrior’s chest core.
Jarek’s eyes went wide, a single, heavy gasp escaping his lips before his head dropped forward, his body going completely limp in the Cassian’s grip.
Cassian released his hold, allowing the large body of the captain to slide down the cracked jade wall, a pool of thick dark blood spreading across the white frost on the floor. The surrounding soldiers did not move an inch, their breathing frozen in absolute terror.
Cassian did not even look at the dead soldier. He pulled a fine silk handkerchief from his belt, slowly wiping the dark blood from his fingers before dropping the stained fabric onto Jarek’s corpse.
"Bring out the shadow hounds," Cassian commanded, his voice cold, formal, and absolute, echoing down the long, frozen hallway. "Release the entire pack into the western crags. Block every gate, every mountain path, and every valley ring. If anyone shelters her, wipe their entire clan from the face of this realm."
He raised his head, looking out through the high windows of the corridor toward the deep white fog that covered the mountain slopes. His golden slitted eyes burned with a dark, unyielding fire that seemed to pierce through the dark night.
"You think you can run from me, Lin Wan?" he whispered into the freezing wind, his fingers clenching into a tight, powerful fist. "There is no corner of this world where you can hide from your master. I will find you, and when I bring you back, I will ensure you never see the light of the sun again."
Back in the hidden cave, a sudden, violent shiver ran through Lin Wan’s body.
She gasped, sitting up abruptly on the moss bed, her hands clutching her chest as the black manticore mark below her collarbone gave a sudden, sharp thud that felt exactly like a heavy heartbeat.
The blue paper talisman on her forehead gave a loud *pop*, a small line of black smoke rising from the edges as the paper withered into ash.
"Lin Wan!" Wei Xiang caught her instantly, his large arms wrapping around her shoulders to steady her shaking frame. "What is it? What did you feel?"
Lin Wan stared into the darkness of the cave, her dark eyes wide with an absolute, primeval terror. She could feel it—deep within her soul core, a dark, heavy heat was rising, vibrating in perfect rhythm with a distant, furious heart back on the mountain peak.
That man must have unleashed his soldiers, and his shadow was already stretching through the fog to find them.
Far away from the heavy clouds and bleeding palaces of the Upper Realm, the universe stretched out into a cold, silent void.
In this dark expanse, there was no solid ground beneath one’s feet, no clean air to fill the lungs, and no warm sun to mark the passing of hours.
There were only endless oceans of glittering stars, floating fields of jagged cosmic dust, and the deep, terrifying emptiness of outer space.
Qin Mo stood perfectly upright in the middle of this silent void, his long, snow-white robes fluttering wildly despite the lack of wind. His appearance was pristine, almost celestial, but his breathing was shallow, his lips pale and dry from hours of uninterrupted combat.
In his right hand, he held his long silver sword. The blade hummed with a sharp, brilliant white light, vibrating with a pure, concentrated spiritual energy that cut through the darkness like a streak of lightning.
His sharp eyes were fixed entirely on the cosmic nightmare hovering just fifty paces ahead of him.
It was a Rift Beast—a ancient, terrifying creature born from the chaotic friction between two colliding dimensions. The entity possessed no fixed shape; it looked like a shifting mass of deep purple shadows, jagged black scales, and dozens of long, thrashing tentacles that tore through the fabric of space itself. In the center of its massive, chaotic form sat a single, giant eye that burned with a cold, hateful blue fire.
From its forehead grew a long, twisted horn that hummed with a chaotic purple energy, crackling like a storm of dark lightning.
The Rift Beast let out a silent, vibrating roar that traveled through the spiritual energy of the void, shaking Qin Mo’s very bones.
*Thrum.*
With a sudden, violent motion, three massive tentacles lashed out through the darkness, moving with a speed that defied the laws of physics. They did not just travel through the air; they literally ripped open tiny cracks in space as they moved, heading straight for Qin Mo’s head and chest.
Qin Mo did not flinch. He lifted his silver sword, his movements calm, fluid, and perfectly controlled, like an ancient master painting on a blank canvas.
*Slash.*
With a swift flick of his wrist, he unleashed a massive crescent wave of white sword energy. The bright light collided with the approaching tentacles, slicing through the dark scales with a sharp, clean sound.
A spray of thick, glowing blue blood erupted from the beast’s limbs, freezing instantly into tiny glittering ice crystals as it hit the absolute cold of outer space.
But the Rift Beast felt no pain. The remaining tentacles thrashed even harder, the massive purple eye in its center widening as it gathered all its chaotic energy into the twisted horn on its forehead. The dark lightning around the horn grew twice as thick, creating a small, swirling black hole right in front of its face.
Qin Mo felt a sharp, warning sting deep within his spiritual core. His grip on his sword hilt tightened until his knuckles turned bone-white.
He had been tracking this specific creature across three different star sectors for weeks, trying to prevent it from tearing open a stable rift that would allow a whole swarm of chaotic beasts to flood into the lower worlds.
He was exhausted, his spiritual reserve running dangerously low, but he knew he could not afford to drop his guard for even a single fraction of a second.
"This ends now," Qin Mo murmured, his voice carried only by the vibration of his own spiritual domain.
He closed his eyes for a brief moment, and inside the quiet emptiness of his mind, a single, clear image appeared. He saw a small, familiar courtyard filled with green trees. He saw a simple, human female with dark eyes, sitting by a wooden table, smiling softly as she counted a small stack of gold cards.
*Lin Wan.*
Her name was a sudden, piercing ray of warmth that cut through the freezing cold of his soul. She was his anchor. She was the only reason he had stayed alive through centuries of bloody refinement, and she was the only reason he intended to survive this night.
He had to finish this battle. He had to clear the outer borders so he could return to her side and pull her away from the dangerous monsters who were hunting her down.
Qin Mo opened his eyes, the deep pupils flashing with a blinding, absolute white light that completely matched the brilliance of his sword.
He raised his blade high above his head, the silver metal absorbing every single drop of his remaining spiritual energy. The white light surrounding his body expanded until he looked like a miniature star burning in the middle of the dark void.
"Ninth Form: Sky Shatter!" he commanded silently.
He threw his entire body forward, turning into a straight beam of white light as he charged directly at the Rift Beast.
At the exact same moment, the beast unleashed its attack.
The twisted horn gave a deafening, silent blast, firing a massive pillar of chaotic purple lightning that tore through the void like a roaring dragon.
The two forces collided in the center of the emptiness.
*BOOM!*
A blinding flash of white and purple light exploded outward, illuminating the surrounding star fields for millions of miles.
The sheer impact of the spiritual collision created a violent, swirling space storm that ripped apart the floating fields of cosmic dust, shattering the small meteors into microscopic powder.
Qin Mo’s white sword energy cut directly through the pillar of purple lightning, slicing it down the middle like a piece of silk. He pushed forward through the roaring storm, his blade extended straight ahead, heading directly for the giant blue eye of the beast.
