Chapter 324: An Ambush (1)

Most of the Devourers were beastkin whose appearances were nothing like those of ordinary beastkin.

In a way, they were failed hybrids born from two different species. Some believed they were nothing more than living experiments, created to become weapons of destruction. Others believed they were simply failed beastkin who had come together and formed their own group.

"Do you think the man with the blue hair is one of the princes?" asked a Devourer whose body looked like a strange mix of a seahorse and a pufferfish. He held a black spear in one hand and a sturdy shield in the other.

"He looks a lot like Sybill, so he’s probably one of her brothers who managed to escape!"

Azul, who was hiding only a short distance away, heard every word clearly. His brows drew together, and his grip on his spear tightened until his knuckles turned white.

"Those bastards..." he growled through clenched teeth. "It sounds like they’re keeping Sybill locked up."

No one knew what they had done to her. No one even knew if she would still recognize him as her brother after everything she had been through or not.

The thought alone made Azul’s stomach twist with anger.

At that moment, he wanted nothing more than to kill every single Devourer standing before him.

He was even about to step out of his hiding place and charge at them, but Orion quickly caught his arm and held him back.

"Your Highness, those Devourers may not be their strongest warriors, but they’re still difficult to deal with," Orion whispered. "I know you’re not in your best condition right now. But if you let your anger control you, things will only end badly."

Caspian, who was standing beside him, quickly nodded in agreement. "He’s right, Your Highness. You need to be patient."

Azul clenched his jaw, but in the end, he forced himself to stay still. "I know." He let out a long breath. "I’m sorry."

On the other side, Zeir and Roxanna were also hiding behind a large rock, but they weren’t just hiding. They were waiting for the right moment to catch the Devourers by surprise.

A few moments earlier, Roxanna had bought a new weapon that the system claimed was the perfect match for Zeir.

It was a pair of long chains with sharp blades attached to the ends. She had spent 25,000 SP on them, making them even more expensive than the weapons she had bought for Azul and Calen.

"Honestly, you really didn’t have to come with us," Zeir whispered.

Roxanna looked up at him. "I just wanted to make sure I can heal all of you as quickly as possible if anyone gets hurt." She paused before lowering her eyes to the pair of bladed chains resting in his hands. "Besides..." she said softly, "I want to see you use them."

If she was being honest, Roxanna still wasn’t completely convinced that the system had picked the right weapon.

Until now, she had only seen Zeir fight with a stone axe or Azul’s spear, so seeing him hold a pair of chains felt... strange.

Besides, did Zeir even know what chains were? This world hadn’t even reached the point of making things out of iron.

Zeir studied the unfamiliar weapon for a moment before giving a helpless smile. "I’m probably not very good at using them."

Roxanna smiled back and gave him an encouraging nod. "That’s alright. No one is good at something the first time they try it."

But when the time finally came for him to use the chains, Roxanna found it hard to believe this was his first time holding them.

Even underwater, where every movement should have been slowed by the water, Zeir swung the chains with surprising ease. They moved exactly where he wanted, as if they had always belonged in his hands.

[It’s not just his strength, Host!] the system chimed in. [The chains were specially made to be much lighter than ordinary ones, so they’re easy for the user to control.]

[But we’re underwater!] Roxanna argued. [Moving through water is much harder than moving through air. It has to be because of his strength, right?!]

But before the system could answer, Roxanna’s attention was drawn back to Zeir.

As the Devourers were about to pass the rock where they were hiding, Zeir made his move.

With a strong swing of his arm, one of the chains shot forward.

The blade at the end buried itself deep into the fish tail of one of the Devourers. Before the creature could even cry out, Zeir yanked the chain back with tremendous force, dragging the Devourer across the seabed.

At the same time, the second chain flew in a different direction. Its blade wrapped around another Devourer’s shield before hooking tightly onto its edge. With a quick pull, Zeir ripped the shield straight out of the creature’s hand and sent it spinning through the water.

The sudden attack threw the entire group into chaos.

"What—?!"

"An ambush!"

Several Devourers immediately turned toward the source of the attack, but Zeir had already stepped out from behind the rock, both chains moving around him as the blades sliced through the water with incredible speed.

This time, he aimed for their hands. The sharp blades wrapped around their wrists and weapons before snapping back with powerful force. One after another, spears and shields slipped from the Devourers’ grasp, drifting helplessly through the water.

"What the—?!"

"My weapon!"

Before the stunned Devourers could react, several figures burst out from behind the surrounding rocks.

"Now!" Orion shouted.

Azul was the first to charge forward. Without giving his opponent a chance to recover, he drove his spear straight through the chest of the nearest unarmed Devourer.

At the same time, Orion and Caspian rushed into the battle from opposite sides. Their spears flashed through the water, striking down the defenseless enemies one after another.

Caught completely off guard and stripped of their weapons, the Devourers had no chance to fight back.
