Chapter 59: Mayor Silas

A few hours later, we arrived in the town of Texas. To avoid wasting any time, we headed straight for Mayor Silas ’s mansion. As the mayor, Silas was responsible for providing support to academies across the continent, so it was also his duty to arrange accommodation for us during our mission.

As soon as we stepped into the mansion, a butler greeted us and led us to Mayor Silas’s office.

The butler opened the door, revealing a group of students exchanging pleasantries with the mayor.

The mayor was an elderly man with a gentle face and a monocle resting on the bridge of his nose. His silver hair fell to his shoulders, smooth and well-groomed. He looked like the kind of refined noble who treated everyone with kindness.

A warm smile spread across his lips as he greeted us and invited us into the room.

I glanced at the people sitting on the long couch and standing nearby. They all gave off the mana of [E- to E+] Rank Awakeners, so I guessed they were second-year students from our academy.

A few of them barely reacted to our arrival, while the others looked at us with interest.

One of [E]-Rank Awakener chuckled, walked over to me, and casually draped an arm over my shoulder. His lips curled into a grin.

"Hello, junior. You’re late."

I let out a sigh and tried to step forward, but the moment I moved, I felt him put force into his arm to stop me. His grip tightened around my right shoulder.

I narrowed my eyes and stared at him. He only grinned back, his face full of provocation, as if saying, Try getting away if you can.

He was the type of bully you’d find at the academy.

"Hey, Jasper, stop bullying them." A blond-haired young man’s voice rang out. He seemed to be the leader of the group.

At that moment, Jasper finally let go of my shoulder and let out a chuckle.

"Just a little welcome for the juniors. Hope I didn’t scare you too much."

Then, his gaze shifted to my wife. He paused for a moment before leaning in and speaking to her in a voice just loud enough for me to hear, but others did not hear.

"You’re pretty beautiful. How about spending the night with me? I don’t even mind that you’re crippled."

...

"Jasper! Don’t make me remind you again."

...

"Alright, alright, alright~" He raised both hands in surrender before stepping back to his seat.

Maris walked over to my wife and asked worriedly,

"What did he just say to you?"

My wife simply shook her head before wheeling herself over to me. She looked at me as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, she only let out a sigh.

I kept my expression cold and walked toward the center of the room with the other students.

A few minutes later, after finishing our discussion with the mayor, he arranged rooms for us before having the butler lead us to the dining room.

Silas said,

"I’m sorry, but I have some matters to attend to. If you need anything important, just let my butler over there know."

He added "A few days ago, some students from Skyline Academy also arrived here to carry out a mission. I hope you all can get along."

The blond-haired young man, Rupert, nodded politely.

"Thank you for your kindness, sir."

Afterward, everyone took their seats for lunch. My group gathered around a round table and began to eat.

After a while, Rupert walked over to me with a glass of wine in his hand. He spoke apologetically.

"I’m sorry about my friend’s rude behavior. He’s a good person, but... his way of greeting people is a little unusual."

I nodded.

"I don’t mind."

Rupert smiled and raised his glass, lightly clinking it against mine.

"Then I hope our mission goes smoothly. Everyone, let’s make a toast."

After exchanging a few pleasantries, Rupert returned to his seat. At that moment, Kellan spoke with a hint of resentment in his voice.

"Greeting us? That looked more like he was trying to throw his weight around and bully the newcomers.

Maris said,

"Don’t pick a fight with them. The rules of the Royal Pendragon prohibit outside interference, so we can’t use our backgrounds to threaten them. But as long as we don’t cause any trouble, they won’t have any reason to target us."

My wife nodded in agreement.

"That’s right. Once we graduate and return, it’ll be nothing more than a pointless provocation."

She looked at me as if waiting for my answer.

"Right, my husband?"

I narrowed my eyes in annoyance.

"I know. You don’t have to keep repeating yourself. Otherwise, I might change my mind."

I resumed eating while thinking about Jasper. It was strange that someone would deliberately pick a fight with me. Even with the academy’s rules, it didn’t make much sense. That made me suspect someone was pulling Jasper’s strings from behind the scenes.

I turned to Jaxon.

"Jaxon, have you found anything about him?"

Jaxon, who had been eating, paused and picked up his iPad.

"Yes, President. He’s the son of a mid-ranking noble family, but he has S-rank potential and is in an Class A. He’s also a member of the Red Bird Club, led by Travis FitzRoy, who has SSS- potential and is the son of the captain of the Royal Pendragon Knights. From what I’ve seen on social media, Jasper is often with Travis. He might even be one of the Red Bird Club’s core members."

He added.

’’Apart from that, I also found some small details about him. Do you want to hear?’’

Kellan stared at Jaxon with widened eyes.

’’D-Damn it. How could you find so much like that?’’

Jaxon scratched the back of his head.

"Uh... nothing much. I just hacked his social media account and his profile in the academy’s database."

Maris and my wife stared at him in disbelief.

"You can do that?"

...

I simply smirked and said,

"Good. But next time, don’t tell anyone that you hacked into the academy’s database. Keep it to yourself."

Jaxon seemed to have far more potential than his profile suggested. He probably hadn’t even realized it himself yet. From now on, I’d make sure to nurture his talent carefully. I wasn’t going to let that potential go to waste.

Besides, I was quite surprised to learn that Jasper was one of Travis’s underlings. That bastard hadn’t given up on picking fights with me yet.

Kellan casually draped an arm over Jaxon’s shoulder.

"Bro, can you hack into the academy’s database and look up the girls for me? We’re friends, right?"

Maris and my wife shot Kellan a dirty look. Startled, Kellan quickly scratched the back of his head and tried to explain.

"I-I’m just trying to get some information about them to improve my chances of asking them out!"

Maris and my wife snorted.

"Perverted scum."
