Chapter 2443: Story 2444: The Crownless Kings

The sky shattered without a sound.

Silver light poured through the widening fracture, yet it brought no warmth. It illuminated only the terrible procession descending from the darkness beyond.

One throne.

Then another.

Then a hundred more.

Each floated through the broken heavens, carved from black crystal polished like frozen midnight. They carried no rulers seated upon them.

Only empty crowns.

The crowns hovered above each throne, cracked and hollow, as though every king who had once worn them had simply... ceased to exist.

The Valley of Dawn held its breath.

The Seven Guardians stood shoulder to shoulder.

The First Keeper quietly stepped beside Noah.

"They have crossed the Between."

His voice carried no panic.

Only sadness.

"They should never have found this dream."

The leading throne drifted lower until it hovered above the valley.

From its darkness rose a tall figure cloaked in tattered royal robes that fluttered without wind.

Its face was hidden beneath a broken crown forged from black crystal.

Only two pale flames burned where eyes should have been.

It spoke with countless voices layered together.

"We greet... the Forty-Second Keeper."

Noah tightened his grip as the silver bracelet expanded into the Staff of Echoes once more.

The crystal star atop the staff glowed brightly.

"You know who I am."

The figure inclined its head.

"We know every Keeper."

Images suddenly surrounded Noah.

Forty-one lives.

Forty-one dreams.

Forty-one Keepers standing exactly where he stood now.

Some raised swords.

Others carried staffs.

Some fought until the stars themselves fell.

Others surrendered to despair.

Every path ended the same way.

An empty throne.

The visions disappeared.

The Crownless King raised one skeletal hand.

"We were once like you."

The words echoed through every crystal tree.

"We protected dreams."

"We believed hope would endure."

"We believed every ending would become another beginning."

Its pale eyes dimmed.

"We were wrong."

The Guardian of Courage stepped forward, his empty hands glowing with golden light.

"You abandoned your purpose."

"No."

The Crownless King answered calmly.

"Our purpose abandoned us."

Behind him, hundreds of silent thrones drifted into formation across the sky.

Every empty crown turned toward Noah simultaneously.

The pressure became unbearable.

The Keeper whispered,

"They aren’t invaders."

"They’re forgotten Guardians."

Noah looked upward in disbelief.

"Every one of them?"

The First Keeper nodded.

"They failed to let go when their dreams ended."

"They refused to become memories."

"So they remained between dreams."

"They surrendered their hope..."

"...to preserve themselves."

Silence spread across the valley.

The Crownless King’s broken crown slowly floated away from his head.

Beneath it was an ordinary face.

Tired.

Ancient.

Filled with immeasurable regret.

"I remember my world."

"I remember every child."

"Every friend."

"Every promise."

His voice trembled.

"I could not bear forgetting them."

The Staff of Echoes pulsed gently within Noah’s hands.

The Dream Within his heart answered.

Not with power.

With compassion.

"You don’t have to forget them," Noah said softly.

The Crownless King smiled sadly.

"That is exactly what the Forty-First Keeper told me."

The words struck the First Keeper like a blade.

He lowered his eyes.

"I failed him."

"No," replied the Crownless King.

"I failed myself."

Suddenly every empty throne began glowing with pale silver light.

Not because they were attacking.

Because something far greater had arrived.

The sky above the valley became an endless ocean of stars.

One by one, forty-one silver constellations appeared.

Each constellation resembled a Keeper holding a radiant staff.

The ghostly figures looked down upon the valley in complete silence.

The Crownless Kings slowly turned toward the heavens.

For the first time in countless ages...

They knelt.

The First Keeper’s expression changed from sorrow to astonishment.

"They’ve come back..."

Noah looked upward as the forty-one constellations descended together, surrounding him in a circle of living starlight.

A single voice echoed from every direction.

"Keeper of the Forty-Second Dream..."

"...our final choice now belongs to you."

Far beyond the stars, another unseen gate slowly began to open.

And from within it came the unmistakable sound...

...of forty-one staffs striking the ground as one.
