Chapter 2442: Story 2443: The Eighth Guardian

The valley fell silent.

Even the wind refused to move.

The hooded stranger remained suspended above the Council, standing upon empty air as though gravity itself had become a forgotten law.

His silver eyes never left Noah.

The glowing bracelet tightened around Noah’s wrist once more.

A pulse surged through his body.

Not pain.

Recognition.

A forgotten memory flashed before his eyes.

He stood within another Valley of Dawn.

Older.

Stronger.

The silver bracelet was no bracelet at all.

It had become a magnificent staff crowned with a crystal star.

Beside him stood the same hooded figure.

Both were laughing beneath a sky filled with silver constellations.

Then the vision shattered.

Noah staggered backward.

"I know you..."

The stranger smiled gently.

"You did."

The Council exchanged uneasy glances.

The Guardian of Time stepped forward, his sapphire cloak flowing like liquid starlight.

"State your name."

The hooded figure lowered his head respectfully.

"My name has been forgotten."

His calm voice echoed across the valley.

"It was erased with the previous dream."

The Guardian of Sacrifice gripped his broken spear.

"No one survives the ending of a dream."

The stranger slowly looked toward him.

"I didn’t survive."

"I waited."

Those two words sent a chill through every Guardian.

The Keeper whispered, almost to himself,

"The Between..."

The hooded man nodded.

"When the last dream ended and the new one had not yet begun..."

"I remained there."

Silence followed.

The Guardian of Rest looked upward with his galaxy-filled face.

"The Between is forbidden."

"It is."

"Nothing can exist there."

The stranger’s smile carried quiet sadness.

"Nothing living."

Noah’s heart pounded.

"What happened to you?"

The stranger finally pulled back his hood.

The Council gasped.

His face looked almost identical to Noah’s.

Not older.

Not younger.

Yet his eyes held countless forgotten dawns.

A thin silver scar stretched across his forehead.

He looked like someone who had spent eternity remembering what no one else could.

"I was once..."

He paused.

"...the Keeper before you."

The valley trembled.

The silver trees bent toward him.

The rivers briefly flowed backward.

The bracelet around Noah’s wrist transformed, extending into a shining staff before shrinking once again.

It was responding.

Accepting.

Remembering.

The Guardian of Life covered her mouth.

"Then the legend was true."

The Guardian of Courage slowly bowed his head.

"The First Keeper."

The hooded man smiled faintly.

"I was the Eighth Guardian."

Noah stared in disbelief.

"But... there were only seven."

"There were."

The former Keeper looked toward the distant heavens.

"Until the dreams began repeating."

His expression darkened.

"The Council believed each dream ended forever."

"It doesn’t."

"It echoes."

Ancient constellations shifted overhead.

One by one, ghostly silhouettes appeared among the stars.

Dozens.

Then hundreds.

Each carried a silver staff.

Each wore a different face.

Yet every one of them bore the same glowing bracelet.

Previous Keepers.

Watching silently across forgotten dreams.

The Council stood speechless.

The First Keeper looked back at Noah.

"You are not the eighth."

"You are the forty-second."

The number echoed across the valley.

Forty-two dreams.

Forty-two Keepers.

Forty-two chances.

Noah felt the weight of every forgotten life settle within his heart.

Then the First Keeper raised his eyes toward the broken heavens.

His gentle expression vanished.

"They’re coming sooner than I feared."

A shadow passed across the stars.

Not one.

Hundreds.

Dark shapes moving between the constellations.

Each carried empty crowns forged from black crystal.

The Guardian of Time’s voice became grave.

"The Crownless Kings..."

The First Keeper slowly lifted his hand.

"No."

His silver eyes narrowed.

"They finally found the path."

Above the Valley of Dawn, the sky cracked open.

From the darkness beyond emerged the first of the Crownless Kings.

Its hollow eyes burned with pale fire.

Its empty throne floated behind it like a silent tomb.

And its gaze settled upon Noah alone.
