Chapter 2440: Story 2441: The First Guardian

The ancient gate continued opening.

Stone groaned against stone.

Silver light poured into the Hall of Echoes like a river flowing from another age.

It carried no heat.

No force.

Only peace.

Every carved rune upon the walls awakened together, filling the chamber with a gentle chorus of forgotten voices.

Noah shielded his eyes.

The brilliance was almost impossible to endure.

Yet somehow it felt... familiar.

The Keeper slowly lowered himself to one knee.

Aiden stared in disbelief.

"You... you’re bowing?"

The Keeper nodded without looking away.

"To the oldest protector ever chosen."

The immense doorway finally opened completely.

Beyond it stretched not another chamber, but a vast valley bathed in endless dawn.

Silver trees swayed beneath a sky without sun.

Crystal rivers reflected stars that somehow shone during daylight.

At the valley’s center stood a lone figure.

An elderly guardian.

His long silver robes drifted gently despite the still air.

A weathered staff rested in one hand.

His white beard reached his waist, and his calm silver eyes seemed to hold every sunrise ever witnessed.

He looked neither powerful nor frightening.

Only wise.

He smiled warmly.

"So..."

His voice echoed like distant bells.

"Someone finally answered the Question."

Noah stepped forward.

"I did."

The Guardian’s gaze settled upon the young king.

For a long moment he simply watched.

Not judging.

Remembering.

Then he smiled wider.

"You answered exactly as the Dreamer once hoped."

The valley shimmered.

Flowers of silver light bloomed beneath Noah’s feet.

Each blossom carried tiny memories.

Children laughing.

Families embracing.

Old friends reunited after years apart.

Small moments.

Simple joys.

The Guardian raised his staff.

"Love has always carried the certainty of loss."

The flowers drifted into the air.

"But that certainty gives every moment its value."

Aiden glanced toward Noah.

"So... the nightmare really is over?"

The Guardian looked at him kindly.

"The First Nightmare has found peace."

He paused.

"But peace always awakens responsibility."

The Keeper slowly stood.

"You mean...?"

The Guardian nodded.

"The First Guardian cannot remain forever."

Silence settled over the Hall.

Noah felt his silver heartbeat quicken.

The Guardian walked toward him.

Every step left glowing footprints that slowly transformed into growing trees.

When he finally stood before Noah, he gently placed one hand upon the young king’s shoulder.

"You opened the new dream."

"You healed the oldest wound."

"You chose hope when countless others chose fear."

Noah swallowed.

"I only answered honestly."

"And that," the Guardian replied softly, "is why you were worthy."

The ancient staff began glowing.

Its silver wood became transparent.

Ancient runes floated from its surface, circling Noah like gentle fireflies.

The Keeper’s eyes widened.

"The Staff of Echoes..."

The Guardian smiled.

"It has chosen its next keeper."

The staff dissolved into streams of radiant light.

The glowing runes settled into Noah’s hands.

Instead of becoming a weapon, they formed a simple silver bracelet around his wrist.

Light pulsed quietly through it.

Alive.

Waiting.

The Guardian’s own body slowly became translucent.

Aiden stepped forward.

"You’re disappearing."

"My task ended long ago."

The old man looked peacefully toward the endless dawn beyond the valley.

"I simply waited for someone brave enough to answer."

His form dissolved into thousands of silver birds.

They soared across the valley before vanishing into the bright sky.

Only his final words remained.

"Guard the dream well... Keeper of Echoes."

The valley trembled.

Far beyond the silver trees, a distant horn sounded.

Not lonely.

Not mournful.

A call.

The Keeper’s face became serious once more.

He looked toward the horizon.

"They’re coming."

Noah tightened his hand around the glowing bracelet.

"Who?"

The Keeper answered without taking his eyes from the distant light.

"The other Guardians."

Across the endless valley...

Six more ancient gates slowly began to open.

Each radiated a different color.

Each concealed a protector from an age before memory.

And one of them glowed with deep crimson light.
