Chapter 2439: Story 2440: The Choice That Ends the Nightmare
The Hall of Echoes became utterly still.
No one spoke.
No one breathed.
The First Nightmare’s question lingered in the air like an ancient promise.
"If love always ends... will you still choose it?"
Noah lowered his eyes.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
The silver light within his heart flickered softly.
Not because it was weakening.
Because it was remembering.
He remembered his mother smiling as she tucked him into bed.
He remembered racing bicycles with Aiden through Hollow Creek.
He remembered Marcus standing between strangers and death.
Lena refusing to abandon the wounded.
Father Gideon praying even when heaven had seemed silent.
He remembered Malthor carrying ten thousand years of loneliness.
The Dreamer creating life simply because it did not wish to be alone.
Every memory carried joy.
Every memory carried pain.
Neither existed without the other.
Noah slowly looked into the child’s mismatched eyes.
"Yes."
The answer was quiet.
Yet it echoed through every silver door.
The First Nightmare tilted its head.
"You would choose loss?"
"I would choose love."
The silver light surrounding Noah expanded.
Warm.
Gentle.
Like the sunrise over Hollow Creek.
"Because love doesn’t become meaningless when it ends."
His voice grew steadier.
"It becomes precious."
The Hall trembled.
Black crystals covering the child’s tears began to crack.
The Broken King closed his eyes.
"So that was the answer..."
The Keeper smiled for the first time.
"The answer every dream was searching for."
The child took one hesitant step forward.
"What if they leave?"
Noah knelt until they were face to face.
"They will."
The child looked down.
"And you’ll cry."
Another pause.
"You’ll hurt."
The child nodded silently.
"But one day..."
Noah placed a gentle hand on the child’s shoulder.
"...you’ll smile because they were part of your life."
The words settled into the darkness.
Not as magic.
As truth.
The First Nightmare began to glow.
The black mist surrounding its small body dissolved into countless silver sparks.
Its silver eye brightened.
Its crimson eye softened.
"I... don’t have to be afraid?"
"No."
"You never did."
The heartbeat beneath Hollow Creek changed.
Boom.
It was no longer heavy.
Boom.
No longer lonely.
Boom.
It sounded peaceful.
Across the Hall of Echoes, the crimson symbols slowly returned to silver.
The shattered doorway repaired itself.
Broken stone flowed together as though time itself had forgiven the wound.
The countless silver doors stopped shaking.
One by one, they closed gently.
Not as prisons.
As safe places where memories could rest.
The Broken King looked at his own hands.
The crimson glow faded from his eyes.
For the first time in countless dreams, they reflected silver.
"My nightmare... is over."
His body slowly dissolved into streams of light.
He smiled at Noah.
"You succeeded where I could not."
The Keeper bowed his head in respect.
"Rest well, old friend."
The child reached out as the Broken King’s light drifted upward.
Then both disappeared into the glowing ceiling of the Hall.
Silence returned.
Peaceful.
Complete.
But before anyone could speak, the silver lantern suddenly flared with blinding brilliance.
An ancient bell rang somewhere beneath Hollow Creek.
Once.
Only once.
The Keeper’s smile vanished.
He slowly turned toward the deepest chamber beyond the Hall.
"The First Nightmare has ended."
His voice became grave.
"Which means..."
Far below them, an immense stone gate—hidden since before the First Dream—began to open.
"...the First Guardian has awakened."
A brilliant silver light spilled through the widening doorway.
And a calm, ancient voice echoed from within.
"Who has answered the Question?"
