Chapter 106: Chapter 106 : Witch

Henry sighed heavily because this was honestly the part of the story he was least enthusiastic about discussing.

Finding out that Lilith needed to stay alive had already been bad enough.

The method he had used to get that information somehow managed to be even worse.

"Well," Henry began while leaning back against the workbench, "when I started looking for Lilith, I ran into a problem. Nobody had any useful information. We knew she existed, we knew she was dangerous, but actually finding her was a completely different matter."

Dean listened while crossing his arms.

"So I started looking for alternatives," Henry continued. "Eventually I figured I might as well use a witch’s help to lure out somebody higher up the food chain and get information that way."

Dean immediately looked disgusted.

"Seriously?" he asked. "Why the hell would you go to witches?"

His face twisted like Henry had just admitted to eating spoiled food.

"Those people are creepy as hell. Every witch we’ve ever met is either throwing blood into a bowl, pulling hair out of somebody’s brush, or carrying around jars filled with things nobody should ever keep in their house."

Sam quietly nodded.

Unfortunately Dean wasn’t entirely wrong.

Most witches they encountered were not exactly normal people.

Dean continued while becoming more irritated the longer he thought about it.

"And don’t even get me started on the ingredients. Every spell somehow needs blood, fingernails, dead animals, grave dirt, or something equally disgusting. You could’ve called us instead."

Henry looked at him flatly.

"Do you really think I didn’t try?"

That made Dean pause.

Because despite his complaints, he knew Henry wasn’t stupid.

At least not usually.

"I called Bobby first," Henry said. "He didn’t know any reliable way to track a specific demon if you didn’t already know something about them. Tracking random demons is possible. Tracking the queen of Hell is a completely different problem."

That actually sounded reasonable.

Sam nodded slightly because Bobby probably would have given the same answer.

Without a trail, or some personal connection, finding one specific demon among thousands was almost impossible.

"So after Bobby came up empty," Henry continued, "I started looking elsewhere. One thing led to another, and eventually I sought out a witch for help."

Dean followed along until a detail finally caught up with him. "Hold on," he said, frowning. "You’ve explained Bobby, the witch, and your whole Lilith hunt, but where does Bela fit into this?"

Henry immediately looked away.

That alone was enough to make Dean suspicious. Over the past year he’d watched Henry deal with vampires, demons, and things that made normal people run screaming. Seeing him hesitate over a story was unusual.

"What happened?" Dean asked.

Henry rubbed his temple and let out a breath. "Bela was involved from the beginning. The witch was helping us gather information, but somewhere along the way things got complicated."

"How complicated?" Sam asked.

"The witch developed feelings for me."

The silence that followed was immediate.

Dean stared.

Sam stared.

Neither looked like that had been among the possible answers.

Dean eventually blinked. "A witch got a crush on you?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I have absolutely no idea."

Sam looked down for a moment, clearly trying not to laugh.

"Don’t," Henry warned.

"I’m not saying anything."

Dean wasn’t even pretending to hold it in anymore.

"So what happened after that?"

Henry leaned back in his chair and looked tired already.

"She decided to solve the problem with magic. Specifically, a love spell."

Dean’s grin widened immediately.

"Of course she did."

"The spell was supposed to target me," Henry continued. "Instead, it hit Bela."

The room went quiet again as the pieces started falling into place.

Every strange interaction upstairs suddenly made sense.

Bela constantly staying near Henry.

The complete lack of personal space.

Madison looking one comment away from committing a felony every time Bela entered a room.

Dean connected everything at once.

Then he lost it.

Laughter burst out of him hard enough that he had to brace himself against the table.

Henry watched with complete disappointment.

"You done?"

"No," Dean admitted honestly. "Not even close."

He took a moment to recover before pointing at Henry.

"So let me get this straight. A witch falls for you, tries to magically make you fall for her, misses completely, and accidentally turns Bela into a lovestruck stalker."

"That’s the short version."

Dean immediately started laughing again.

Sam wasn’t much better now. He hadn’t joined in, but the effort was visible.

Henry folded his arms.

"The funny part ends there. I killed the witch, and the spell should have ended with her."

Sam’s expression became more serious.

"But it didn’t."

"No."

The irritation in Henry’s voice was impossible to miss.

"The witch died. The spell stayed. We checked books, rituals, everything we could get our hands on. Nothing worked."
