Chapter 155: Chapter 155 With resentment
Carla instinctively shot back, “Lana never asked you to teach her, so don’t get too full of yourself.”
Danielle scoffed.
She was filled with resentment. “Carla, why are you taking Alana’s side?Everyone knows she’s the least capable one here! What qualifies her to be Manager Cole’s assistant?”
“Because Manager Cole personally chose her, not you! So don’t just say the grapes are sour because you can’t have them, okay! Look at that sour, spiteful look on your face, it’s really scary!”
Danielle was burning with rage at Carla’s words.
Alana couldn’t help but chuckle.
You have to admit, Carla has a sharp tongue.
Danielle, unable to think of a good retort, stormed off in a huff.
It was true that Cole personally requested Alana to be his assistant, it wasn’t Alana who asked for the job.
But some people just couldn’t help but resent her for it.
Alana was so beautiful that everyone focused on her looks and overlooked her abilities.
Everyone assumed she was just a pretty face with no real talent.
But so what if they were unhappy?
The die has been cast; the decision was final.
They’ll just have to swallow their resentment. Alana looked at Carla, gratefully. “Carla, thank you for speaking up for me.”
Carla waved her hand dismissively. “Oh, come on. We’re all colleagues, wouldn’t it be better if we got along peacefully?”
“It’s just that some people can’t help but stir up trouble! Danielle is just jealous of you. Don’t forget, you were the one who secured the Green collaboration project back then, you deserve the most credit. Now that the project is finally moving forward, they’re suddenly questioning your
abilities.”
Alana smiled. “Then I’ll work even harder to prove myself again.”
Carla nodded vigorously, “I believe in you!You graduated from a top-tier university, there’s no way you’re completely incompetent. You must just be playing it close to your chest!”
Alana blinked.
Not exactly.
Don’t put her on a pedestal.
No matter how prestigious the university, once you enter the workforce, everyone starts from the same starting line.
Others have been in the workforce a few years longer, so they’re certainly more capable and experienced than she was, she couldn’t deny that.
All she could do was work hard and strive to surpass them.
No sooner had Alana sat back down than she received a file from Cole via WeChat.
[Check the data. Need it by tonight.]
Alana tapped open the file. The dense array of data inside made her scalp tingle.
By tonight?
Looks like she’d have to work overtime.
Cole waited for quite a while before receiving Alana’s emotionless reply. 【Got it.】
He furrowed his brow, but quickly relaxed.
She’d probably have to work late tonight.
He would stay with her.
No matter what, he was determined to win back the Lana who used to cling to him, whose heart and eyes were filled with nothing but him.
Before the end of the workday, Alana still hadn’t managed to finish her tasks. Fearing that Stephan might come to pick her up early, she sent him a message.
Alana: [Um, I’m working late tonight, so you don’t need to come pick me up.]
He replied quickly.
Stephan:[Until when?]
Alana thought for a moment.
Alana: [I’m not sure yet, probably an hour or two more.]
Stephan: [Okay, let me know when you’re done, and I’ll come pick you up then.]
She bit her lip and replied, “Okay.”
After replying, she went back to work.
Little did she know that a tall, slender gray figure was gradually approaching her, standing right behind her.
But Alana, intently cross-checking data, didn’t notice a thing.
Cole stood behind Alana, his gaze resting unabashedly on her. The girl stared at the computer screen, her slender fingers gripping the mouse as she moved it gently.
Her rosy lips were slightly pursed, and her eyes and brows betrayed her concentration. Her fair complexion, bathed in the soft glow of the screen, appeared even more delicate and innocent, like a freshly peeled egg, white and tender, as if glowing with its own light.
He couldn’t help but move closer, his tall, slender frame slowly drawing near to her.
Alana sensed something and let out a startled cry, “Ah!”
All her colleagues at their workstations had left; she was the only one left.
She felt a sudden chill on her back and thought there might be something dirty there. But when she turned around, she saw that it was Cole standing behind her.
Even though he was a living person, his sudden appearance behind her was enough to give her quite a scare.
Her face went pale.
Cole watched her reaction. “What are you so nervous about?”
Alana was still shaken. She thought to herself, How could she not be nervous when a man that big suddenly appeared behind her?
She clenched her teeth. “Manager Cole, it’s after hours. Why haven’t you left yet?”
Cole retorted, “Aren’t you still here too?”
“I haven’t left, and I have no idea who to thank for that.”
If it weren’t for him insisting she finish verifying the data by today, she wouldn’t be stuck here working overtime all alone.
Cole detected the resentment in her tone. He curved his lips, choosing not to argue, but instead offered kindly.
“How much is left to verify? I’ll help you.”
She replied coldly, “No need to trouble yourself. I can handle it on my own.”
“I’ll be the one checking it all anyway. If I help you verify it now, it’ll save you
from making mistakes, won’t it?”
Alana fell silent for a moment, then pressed her advantage, “Since you have so
much time on your hands, why don’t you just go ahead and check the rest of the data for me? I have something else to do in a bit and need to head back.”
Cole choked on his words, feeling deeply uncomfortable. “Is that how much you don’t want to be with me?”
“No, I just think we should maintain a proper distance between us.”
“Is that so?”
Cole tugged at the corner of his mouth. “Then why didn’t you keep your distance
from me before?”
“Back then, I was stupid...”
“Enough!” Cole didn’t want to hear any more. “Since you don’t want my help, then forget it.” His expression turned cold, and he turned to walk away.
Alana huffed.
It was baffling.
He showed up out of the blue, then flew off the handle and left just as suddenly.
But she didn’t think much of it and continued checking the data.
She had to finish the reconciliation before heading home, so she had no time to think about anything else.
After returning to his office, Cole reflected on his behavior and felt a pang of
regret.
His original intention had been to get closer to Cole and gradually mend their
relationship.
But he hadn’t expected that, unable to control his temper in the moment, it’d end up backfiring.
He sat there for a while and gradually calmed down. Realizing that Alana was working late and probably hadn’t eaten dinner, he picked up his phone, made a call, and ordered two takeout meals.
*********
Meanwhile.
Far away at the Hudson Group, Stephan was having the same thought.
Since Alana was working late, he also stayed back at his company to wait until she gave him a call that she was done.
After hanging out for a while, he realized she might not have had dinner yet since she was working late, so he started wondering if he should order her some takeout.
Stephan: [Have you eaten yet? If you haven’t eaten yet, I’ll send you some takeout.]
Alana didn’t reply; she was probably busy.
But Stephan still had Vance order takeout for her.
Vance sighed, heavily.
Being forced to work overtime was bad enough, but having to order dinner for the CEO’s girlfriend was just too much!
If they don’t give him a raise, he wouldn’t keep doing this job!
Even though he was seething inside, he resigned himself to the task and went to order dinner.
********
Halfway through her overtime shift, a delivery guy showed up at Alana’s door.
“Hello, is this Ms. Alana Martin?”
“There’s a food delivery for you.”
