Chapter 149: Chapter 149 Lowered her eyes
Darla lowered her eyes. “So you didn’t know either, Auntie. No wonder he wouldn’t let me meet his girlfriend when I mentioned wanting to see her earlier, it really was just an excuse to turn me down.”
“Never mind. I’ll head home right away.”
Upon hearing this, Cynthia felt even more certain that the fault lay with her own son.
“Don’t go. I’ll call him right now and tell him to let you in!”
Darla couldn’t help but say, “Never mind, Auntie. I don’t want this little thing to cause a rift between you and your son. Also, it’s no big deal. At worst, I’ll just call a repairman to come fix it for me.”
In reality, her showerhead wasn’t broken at all; it was just an excuse she’d made up to get close to Stephan.
Cynthia gritted her teeth. “No way! Still, you’re my colleague. Even if he doesn’t like you, he shouldn’t treat you this badly, he doesn’t respect me as his mother at all. Just you wait, I’m calling him right now!”
“Auntie, Auntie...”
Before Darla could say another word, Cynthia had already hung up.
Darla pouted. She hadn’t just gone and tattled on him to his mother, she’d clearly tried to speak up for him and plead his case.
Stephan closed the door and headed to the kitchen to prepare a late-night snack for Alana.
After all, he’d expended a lot of energy just now and needed to replenish his strength. Besides, she wasn’t exactly in top shape, after just a couple of rounds, she was already complaining she couldn’t take it anymore.
He’d have to drag her along to work out sometime. Just as he was gathering the ingredients, his phone rang.
Stephan didn’t even check who it was; he just picked up the phone and answered.
As soon as he picked up, Cynthia’s furious rant came pouring out.
“You little jerk, what did Darla ever do to you? Is it really necessary to be so cruel and kick her out of the house? She came to see you in the middle of the night just because her shower-head broke and she wanted to borrow yours. Is that really a reason to kick her out?”
“Darla is my colleague, too. Can’t you do me a favor and treat her a little better?”
Stephan gave a forced smile. “So she went complaining to you again?”
No sooner had he warned her than she went and tattled.
She really was one way in public and another behind closed doors.
Cynthia retorted angrily, “She didn’t tattle to me, I just happened to call her and ask, and that’s when she told me! Don’t be so mean to a young woman. She just told me not to take things to heart, but you’re always pushing her away!”
“A girl as understanding, gentle, and virtuous as Darla is hard to find even if you
searched high and low. Stop nitpicking at her all the time!”
Stephan was already silently rolling his eyes.
“What kind of understanding, gentle, and virtuous girl knocks on a man’s door in the middle of the night wearing a thin, almost see-through white dress?”
Cynthia choked on her words.
But she quickly recovered, “Her showerhead broke, so she had to rush out. Of course she’d be dressed casually. What do you think a man is focusing on? Staring so shamelessly at a girl’s outfit, doesn’t that mean he’s interested in her?! If he’s staring just because he’s interested in her, what’s the difference between him and
a pervert?”
Stephan gasped.
He couldn’t help but laugh in exasperation.
Was that even staring?
His eyes weren’t blind, wasn’t it perfectly normal for him to see what the woman is wearing when she came to his door?
Cynthia continued, “Darla s still waiting for you outside. Hurry up and open the door, let her in!”
Stephan was speechless. “Mom, if I let her in, aren’t you afraid she’ll harass your son?”
Cynthia retorted, “What do you mean ‘harass’? Darla is no way that kind of loose
girl. If anyone’s going to be harassing anyone, it’s you who’ll be the one doing it!”
“Even though I’m very pleased with Darla and intend to have her marry into your family, that doesn’t mean you can take advantage of her! If you want to take things further, wait until you’ve officially confirmed your relationship.”
Stephan’s tone was extremely flat. “Mom, there’s no way I’m going to confirm a
relationship with her, because...I already have a girlfriend.”
However, Cynthia didn’t believe a word of it. “Here we go again! It’s bad enough that you just deceived Darla, but now you’re deceiving me, your own mother!”
“No matter how much you dislike
her, you shouldn’t be deceiving her with tactics meant for children!”
Stephan was so exasperated he laughed, “When did I ever deceive you two?”
He had told them in all seriousness about his relationship with his girlfriend.
He emphasized, “I really do have a girlfriend!”
Cynthia scoffed, “Fine, you say you have a girlfriend, then bring her home so I can
see her!”
Did he really think she’d believe it without seeing the real person?
She wasn’t that gullible!
Stephan’s thin lips twitched. “Don’t worry. Not only will I bring her home for you to see,
but I’ll also marry her and make her your daughter-in-law. I’m warning you in advance: if I really do bring her home, don’t you dare mistreat her.”
Cynthia rolled her eyes. “First prove you can actually bring her home!”
“I definitely will.”
When it came to Alana, Stephan was determined to have her.
“Okay, everyone’s free this weekend. Bring her home." She’ll see for herself if this girlfriend is real or not!
If she’s not real, just wait until she gets her hands on him!
“Alright, I’m hanging up.”
“Wait, what about Darla...”
Stephan gave a forced smile. “Don’t worry. Didn’t her showerhead break? I personally called a repairman to fix it for her. Isn’t that gentlemanly enough?”
The bottom line was, he wasn’t letting her into the house.
After all, Alana was here. If she saw him letting another woman into the house, who knows what she’d think.
If she got upset, he’d have to placate her. To prevent that from happening, he decisively stopped Darla from coming in.
Cynthia sighed.
She was at a loss for words.
After the call was hung up, Cynthia had a terrible headache. With her son being so
stubborn and clueless about romance, how on earth was she supposed to find him a wife? What woman could possibly put up with him?
Just then, she turned her head and saw her husband, Bernard, stepping through the door with his left leg.
“Look at the good-for-nothing son you’ve raised, he’s nothing but trouble! Get out of here! You’re not sleeping in the bed tonight!”
Bernard swallowed.
What did his son’s troubles have to do with him, the father?
And now he was suddenly the only one who raised the child, she hadn’t even lifted a finger, had she?
*******
Stephan actually called the community maintenance worker for Darla.
So when Darla answered the repairman’s call, she was completely taken aback.
Darla seemed to realize something. Clenching her teeth, she said, “Never mind,
you can go back. I just noticed the showerhead is working again.”
After hanging up, she couldn’t help but glare at the tightly locked door in front of her.
“Stephen, you’re something else!”
After saying that, she couldn’t help but let out a huge yawn and then sneezed loudly.
Oh no!
She’d been standing outside too long, and dressed too lightly, so she’d caught a chill.
Darla gritted her teeth and turned to leave, unwilling to accept her defeat.
Meanwhile.
Alana stepped out of the bathroom wrapped in a pink bathrobe.
The room was empty; Stephan wasn’t there.
Although he wasn’t there, he had already tidied the room spotless.
“Where did he go again?”
Curious, Alana stepped out of the room to look for him. When she reached the first floor, she faintly heard the sound of someone pottering about in the kitchen.
Alana walked toward the kitchen and stood at the doorway, immediately spotting a tall, slender figure bustling about inside.
The man had his back to her, holding a spoon and stirring a small pot. She didn’t know what he was simmering, but he was doing it with great concentration.
A faint mist filled the air, creating a warm, homey atmosphere.
Alana couldn’t help but stare, reluctant to disturb the warm tranquility of the moment. She thought to herself, living with a man like this would probably be quite nice.
Stephan poured the finished dish into a bowl, then placed it in a basin of cold water to cool.
After all, it was too hot to eat right away.
Just as he finished, he seemed to sense something. He turned his head and saw Alana standing in the doorway.
